TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD The Epiphany of our Lord on January 6 begins a long period after Advent and

Christmas when the image of light is at the center of our thoughts about our

Lord. Remember, the light of the star leads those wise men to the infant

Christ.

During all of the weeks of Epiphany, we see in Sunday’s worship passages

that the light grows brighter. The Sunday following the Epiphany is always

the Baptism of our Lord, where there is water, the Spirit as a dove, and a

voice from heaven, “this is my Son.”

Each week thereafter more and more we learn about this Holy One who has

come. The revealing light [after all the word “epiphany” means revealing]

shines brighter and brighter, as Jesus comes calling disciples, teaching, and

healing.

Then finally on the last Sunday of this season, the Transfiguration of our

Lord, we see our Lord in the brightest light joined by two leaders of the faith.

Once again, we hear a voice from heaven just in case we haven’t gotten it yet,

“this is my Son.” Make no mistake this Jesus of Nazareth is the One who has

come into the world for us, just as the scriptures – law and prophets – have

said.

Don’t forget the festival Sunday just before Ash Wednesday and Lent – The

Transfiguration of our Lord, February 26.

Shrove Tuesday

“THE FEAST BEFORE THE FAST” – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28TH AT 6PM

This day before the disciplines of Lent begin is a traditional day of feasting. On

Mardi Gras at PoP, we’ll continue our traditional way of marking this feast time

by serving pancakes and everything you might imagine would accompany such

a meal. The feast begins at 6pm. Don’t forget the children will also be

burying their Alleluia banner as a part of the celebration and will wait to

“resurrect” it on Easter Sunday. All proceeds over the cost of this event will go

to helping our high school youth go to camp this summer.

Art for Faith’s Sake Continues…

The Singing Tree has performed together since 2006, having met initially at

the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. With Ray’s extensive knowledge and love

of folk music and Lloyd’s classical music training and orchestral experience,

the Singing Tree brings two powerful music traditions together into something

unique and powerful. They will be featured here at Prince of Peace IN

CONCERT on Sunday, March 19th at 3:00pm.

WEDNESDAYS TOGETHER Wednesdays at 5:30pm in the Hall

What started nearly 27 years ago as a

trial event has turned into a ministry of

family, friendship, fellowship and

Christian education. Sign up weekly at

www.poplargo.org for a wonderful time

of dinner, music and learning in Christ.

During our regular season, supper is

served weekly at 5:30pm. During Lent,

A Word About Common Prayer

On Friday, January 20 we were blessed to host the Common Prayer event for Tampa Bay with the Roman Catholic diocese of St. Petersburg. Bishop Robert Schaefer presided with Vicar General Msgr. Robert Morris, and many Lutherans and Catholics from the area participated and attended. Common Prayer is a commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

As I tried to express before worship the following Sunday, God has blessed Prince of Peace with many gifts, among them being a gift of hospitality – of welcoming, making space for worship, learning, serving, of “setting a table” with grace.

So many of you worked so hard, literally setting tables, tuning up instruments and voices, making certain we had mics and additional cameras/monitors at the ready; patrolling the parking lot; acolyting, ushering, welcoming, cleaning, gardening, polishing, baking, shopping, arranging flowers, serving – all done with smiles, patience, great energy, and a heart for being/doing the best we are able as we share with others what God has given us. Hard work, to be sure. What a joy!

As always, it is such a blessing to serve with you all. I thank God for you all.

- Pr. Joe

PRAYER AROUND THE CROSS

Wednesday Evening

February 8th at 7:07pm

Last fall, we experienced this unique time of quiet prayer together as a close to our Wednesday evening. Following our meal and learning time on this night, we will join in prayer in the sanctuary.

Each day wherever we are, we offer to God our prayers. When we are together in worship on Sundays, we lift our voices in prayers and praises, making a joyful noise to the Lord even as scripture encourages us.

Sometimes it may be good for us to experience prayers and praises another way. With all of the harsh noise all around us and within, times together listening in the evening stillness can surely inspire our spirits.

Prayer around the cross is a time of prayer, scripture reading, song and silence. In this 20-minute worship time, we will gather around an illuminated cross, hear brief passages, pray aloud and in our hearts and experience the silence of prayerful moments with sisters and brothers in Christ.

Your Celebrate/Build! News Share

JUNE 2017 IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER Can you believe it? We began our 3 year Celebrate our Past...Build our

Future capital appeal to construct a Learning Center [LC] and refurbish what

has become our Community Outreach Center [COC] in July, 2014. And now

we are almost at the end.

And, again, can you believe it? Of the $911,421 pledged at that time, as of

January 23, we have received $902,242.92! That’s up from $884,677.26 in

December. We may not make it to the pledged goal, because some friends

who pledged have died and others have moved.

But as you recall we have had so many, who were not able to pledge, to give

along the way. And one family encouraged us all to give a little more by

matching some of the gifts.

Remember at the congregational meeting we voted to take some of the funds

to retire the old mortgage and set aside other funds to replace an “ancient”

leaking roof. In another article, you will see another way we have been

blessed to use the funds. Blessings abound!

Now, let us continue in our prayers to God for our ministries, current and

future, that work we know God has given us and the opportunities we have

not yet dreamed. May all we do honor the holy One by whose grace we are

made whole.

Thanks be to God!

Adult Education

2017 is a year of commemoration as we remember together the events of 500 years ago that brought about what history calls the Reformation. We invite you to come on Sundays and Wednesdays (and on other days of the week) to explore the powerful, prophetic and saving word of God. We will learn more of what we called Lutheran Christians hold dear.

SUNDAY CLASSESSUNDAY ADULT FAITH FORMATION

Paul’s letter to Christians in Rome has been inspiring Christians from the first

century to Augustine, Luther, Wesley and each one of us. “Nothing can

separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus,” Paul writes, and our hearts

are indeed warmed. We continue this study throughout February.

Join us for this series as we study together on Sundays at 10am in the

Chapel.

DISCOVERING THE PSALMSWEDNESDAY NIGHTS TOGETHER

What a response to this study of the Psalms. We’ll continue through the month.

We are exploring and making new discoveries in what would have been our

Lord’s psalm and prayer book. Most have heard that Luther was inspired by

psalms to write hymns. While we are comforted with psalms we learned in our

childhood, there are other psalms where the writers have dared to call out to

the LORD in unexpected and surprising ways. Join us on Wednesday evenings

in February as we open ourselves to the Psalms.

TURNING ASIDE

A New Time for Study

In Exodus while shepherding his

flock, Moses sees a bush burning,

but not being consumed. “I must

turn aside and look at this great

sight, and see why the bush is not

burned up,” says Moses. There,

the LORD confronts him, calls

him, teaches him.

So, why don’t we turn aside. On

the second and fourth Monday

evenings of each month, we will

read a book together. Pr. Joe will

lead the group as we explore

older classics and newer ones,

too. We’ll discuss, ask one

another questions, wonder out

loud what an author is saying

and listen for what our Lord may

be teaching us.

Our times together will go 60-80

minutes. We’ll start at 7PM and

meet in the COC [Community

Outreach Center]. Since it is

Reformation anniversary year,

we’ll begin on Monday, March 13

with “Life Together” by Lutheran

Christian martyr, Dietrich

Bonhoeffer. Bookstores, online

services and even the library can

help you. We may have a copy

in our church library.

Let’s turn aside together.

INQUIRERS’ CLASS BEGINS –

Sundays at 10am in the Church Office

Inquirers’ Class is for all who would like to know more about the Lutheran tradition of the faith. Bring your questions, meet the staff, and engage in conversation about the faith we share. Meet us in the Church Office each Sunday! Our weekly conversations will be each through February 26th.

THIRD GRADE BIBLES

On February 26th, our 3rd grade students will receive Bibles as one of our Stepping Stones of Faith. On February 12th & 26th, children and parents will meet after worship in the Parish Hall (12:15pm-1:30pm, lunch provided) to learn about their Bibles. Please let Pastor Adam know if you are planning on receiving your Bible. Any 4th graders who did not receive a Bible last year are also welcomed and encouraged to attend.

SUNDAY PREVIEW – THURSDAYS AT 10AM Don’t forget, on Thursday mornings, we meet over coffee to look over the scripture readings coming up on Sunday morning. Get a head start in prayerfully pondering those passages with Pastor Vern Squire and Pastor Jim Schalkhauser. It is a wonderful way of preparing for worship and anticipating the prayers, hymns and sermon for Sunday. Join us in the Community Outreach Center at 10am!

Work Being Done on the Sanctuary/Parish Hall

At our congregational meeting in December, we voted to approve the use of funds to replace the roof over our kitchen and choir room. This elder roof has been patched numerous times and continues to leak. It was a wise decision to take $20,000+ from funds raised in our capital appeal to take care of this valuable asset to our ministry.

In spring 2016 the Congregation Council discussed many times investigating the replacement of the original [yes, original!] air handler in our sanctuary and the cooling units. The system had begun to leak coolant and was no longer operating efficiently. Because of the expertise of certain congregation members, we have patched, applied band aids, etc. to make it last longer. It now must be replaced before we hit the hot season. Also, last spring a generous member of the congregation gave us a gift to help with this effort whenever we engaged a contractor. We have sought three bids and much to our shock they are all in the $43,000 to $44,000 range, twice as much as we had anticipated. While the gift covers nearly half that amount, we still must take the other amount from major maintenance funds. Thanks be to God for that gift and for the major maintenance resources.

It is important for all of us to know how resources are being cared for and how we are addressing the needs of the place God has given us. We will keep you informed when this work begins.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM CONGREGATION COUNCIL

- Received revised report from Bill Silberman regarding a bid from a contractor to construct planting areas, lay pavers, etc.; decided to seek another bid before making a decision

- Voted to proceed with replacing the kitchen/choir room roof that holds several a/c units

- Voted to replace original air handler in sanctuary and outside units which have been leaking for many months

- Voted to move funds from the Memorial Fund to balance the shortfall in expenditures for 2016

- Received a report regarding NovusWay Ministry’s Mission Possible capital appeal for funds to expand Luther Springs; we will decide in February how to proceed

- Voted to provide Preschool with funds from the Vision Fund to cover a shortfall in payroll in late February

- Heard from Pr. Adam that we may be receiving an application for a summer intern; stipend to be provided from a source outside the congregation

PEACE GARDEN PLANNED FOR 2017

As many of you have already heard, the former preschool playground (between the newly renovated Community Outreach Center and the Parish Hall) will become our new Prince of Peace Garden. As plans progress, we now have an opportunity to participate in the Commemorative Walkway by donating an engraved brick to honor a special person, recognize your family members, or remember a loved one.

Special forms are available in the church office or in the Parish Hall. A member of the Peace Garden committee will also be available after Sunday services under the portico if you have questions or would like to pick up a form (also available at poplargo.org). Engraved bricks are $65.00 each. We look forward to sharing our excitement as this beautification project progresses through the early Spring.

GO & DO LIKEWISE IN 2017 Mark your calendars for Friday & Saturday, March 24-25th!

Each year the wonderful people of Prince of Peace join forces to help those in our community who help others. We cook, clean, care, perform, paint, rake, pray and anything else that is helpful. You can stay right here at the church to do God’s work for those in need, or you can work on-site at agencies like Kimberly Home, Clearwater Free Clinic, Pinellas Hope, Clothes to Kids, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Lighthouse for the Blind and many more.

Work an hour to two or the whole weekend. Have fun and make friends – more than 150 of our members help out each year. Watch for the sign-up sheets coming March 5th.
