PRINCE2® (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is

a process-based approach for project management

providing an easily tailored and scalable method for the

management of all types of projects. The method is the

de-facto standard for project management in the UK and is

practiced worldwide.

In 1989, PRINCE® was released and in 1996 many improve-

ments and enhancements were implemented which led to

PRINCE2®. In 2002 and 2005 there were further updates to

include the latest insights into best practices and in 2009

there was a comprehensive review which brings us to the

current version. The development of PRINCE2® from the

earlier PRINCE® method was driven by user based-improve-

ments, project management specialists and a review panel

of 150 public and private sector organisations. PRINCE2® is

a flexible project management method and although origi-

nally designed for the management of IT projects it is now

suitable for all other types of projects. PRINCE2® is based

on seven principles which form the basis of the PRINCE2®

method:

• PRINCIPLE 1: Business justification - a PRINCE2® project

must have business justification at all times

• PRINCIPLE 2: Learn from experience - lessons should be

sought, recorded and acted upon

• PRINCIPLE 3: Roles and Responsibilities - a PRINCE2®

project has defined and agreed roles and responsibili-

ties with an organisational structure that represents the

business, user and supplier stakeholders

• PRINCIPLE 4: Manage by Stages - PRINCE2® project

stages, must be planned, monitored and controlled

• PRINCIPLE 5: Manage by exception - a PRINCE2®

project uses defined project tolerances to effectively

delegate authority

• PRINCIPLE 6: Focus on products - project products

must be defined and product quality mechanisms

established

• PRINCIPLE 7: Tailor to suit the environment - PRINCE2®

should be tailored to suit the project’s size, environ-

ment, complexity, importance, capability and risks

The 7 Principles of PRINCE2® are followed by 7 Themes. The

PRINCE2® themes are those aspects of project manage-

ment that need to be addressed continually throughout the

project lifecycle.

• BUSINESS CASE: The objective of a Business Case is

to establish mechanisms to judge whether the project

is (and remains) desirable, viable and achievable as a

means to support decision-making in its continued

investment

• ORGANISATION: Defines project roles and responsibili-

ties and the organisational structure of the project

• QUALITY: The quality theme defines how the desired

level of quality is to be obtained and verified within a

project

• RISK: The Risk theme focuses on managing project risks

• PLANS: This theme answers the questions surrounding

the means of delivering the products: where, how and

by whom, and estimating the when and how much?

• CHANGE: The Change theme aims to develop a reliable

change and configuration management approach,

enabling the Project Manager to deal with potential

changes, while maintaining project stability and

security

• PROGRESS: This theme answers “Where are we now?

Where are we going? Should we carry on?” Provision

should be made to evaluate actual achievements

against planned achievements.

The principles and themes are applied throughout the 7 pro-

cesses: Starting up a project, Initiating a project, Directing

a project, Controlling a stage, Managing product delivery,

Managing stage boundaries and Closing a project.

Who should attend PRINCE2® training?

Making projects workPRINCE2® can be used in all sizes and types of projects; the key benefits

are:

• Managing or working in a project environment using a world rec-

ognised project management method

• Consistency of project work and the reuse of project assets

• Design plans and reports to meet the needs of all project team and

Project Board levels,

• Improved communication and control

• Benefit from a common project language and approach to report-

ing which will save time and effort

• Increase staff awareness of their roles and responsibilities

• Ensure all stakeholders are properly represented in planning, deci-

sion making and project approval

• Ensure team members focus on the viability of the project in rela-

tion to its business case objectives

THE PRINCE2® FOUNDATION course will provide delegates

with a detailed knowledge of the PRINCE2® methodology

including the processes, themes and principles central to the

PRINCE2® method. The Foundation level measures whether

a delegate would be able to act as an informed member of

a project management team using the PRINCE2® method

within a project environment supporting PRINCE2®, typically

for those who will be involved in projects, but not necessar-

ily in a leading role. Successful completion of the Founda-

tion exam will give the delegate a recognised Foundation

qualification. The course audience might include:

• Project & Programme Managers, General Managers,

Team Managers and support staff, Project Management

Consultants, Directors/executives of projects and any

organisation or individual seeking a controlled ap-

proach to managing projects.

THE PRINCE2® PRACTITIONER course will build on the

knowledge gained during the Foundation level. Follow-

ing the course candidates will be able to understand the

relationships between processes, themes, principles and

PRINCE2® products and can apply this understanding to a

given project scenario. Successful completion of the Practi-

tioner examination will give the delegate a recognised Prac-

titioner qualification; understood and identified in industry

as a mark of quality for Project Managers. People interested

in attending this course might be:

• Project & Programme Managers, General Managers,

Team Managers and support staff, Project Management

Consultants, Directors/executives of projects and any

organisation or individual seeking to apply PRINCE2®

to the running and managing of a project within an

environment supporting PRINCE2®.

PRINCE2® examination guide

PRINCE2® FOUNDATION

This is the entry level qualification and is aimed at individu-

als who have mastered the content of a PRINCE2® Founda-

tion course. The purpose of the foundation qualification is

to confirm the candidates have sufficient knowledge and

understanding of the PRINCE2® method to be able to work

effectively with, or as a member of, a project management

team working within an environment supporting PRINCE2®.

• Prerequisites: None, however, attendance

at a PRINCE2® Foundation course is strongly

recommended

PRINCE2® PRACTITIONER

Aimed at professionals who can demonstrate an under-

standing of the reasons behind the processes and themes

of PRINCE2®, and that they understand the principles

underpinning these elements. These professionals have

shown evidence that they can apply and tailor PRINCE2®

to address the needs and problems of a specific project

scenario and different project circumstances.

• Prerequisites: Successful completion of the PRINCE2®

Foundation Exam and an accredited PRINCE2®

Practitioner course

PRINCE2® certification will give you the skills to feel confident in managing projects successfully within the workplace. Using

PRINCE2® in your projects will give you common systems, procedures and language. It provides you with greater control

of resources, and the ability to manage business and project risk more effectively. You will make fewer mistakes, learn from

those that you do make, and ultimately save money and effort.

PRINCE2® is recognised as a world-class international product and is the standard method for project management. Many

companies across the world require staff to be PRINCE2® certified.

TACT is Syzygal’s pro-prietary methodology for developing courses and courseware

As part of doctoral research,

Syzygal have developed a unique

approach to developing and

designing professional education

courses and courseware. Rather

than utilising tired and over-used

methods such as working straight

from a syllabus, Syzygal decided to

research the key elements of effec-

tive learning. What we found was

that although dynamic and flexible

delivery methods were essential to

the overall experience for students,

it was the approach to content

formulation and positioning that

was critical to maximising learning

up-take and knowledge retention.

The THEORY of a subject is obvi-

ously critical to success, but ensur-

ing it is positioned in contextual

alignment is the pay-off. We then

ensure students ABSORB the the-

ory by placing them in real-world

scenarios and role-plays, ensuring

the theory connects to practical

application. To support this we

CONSOLIDATE the learning by us-

ing innovative games and exercises

to further develop understanding

and retention. Finally we ensure

TESTING takes place throughout

training events which prepares

the student to take their formal

certification.

The TACT approach

cialisation in the areas of IT Service

Management, IT Security Manage-

ment, Project Management and

Enterprise Governance. Our focus is

so we help our clients develop world-

class, business centric IT Services

and business change environments.

Placed world-wide, we provide in-

novative solutions helping your busi-

ness deliver tangible and measurable

improvements through direct con-

sultancy or training and education

products. Syzygal’s primary business

objectives and goals are to:

industry best practices

tation of that knowledge

prove their business practices

Our approach is to accept and deliver

only the highest quality in informa-

tion content, materials and delivery

of our courses. We believe that learn-

ing is better achieved by participa-

tion from the student rather than

instruction by the lecturer. Taking

this approach leads to a better overall

experience for the training candi-

dates and achieves a longer lasting

knowledge transfer from the course.

We employ only the best training

resources and ensure they have ap-

plicable, real life experience in their

specialist areas and industry standard

frameworks and methodologies.
