Principal’s News Well - the wonderful things just keep happening here at Nimbin Central! I just received the news this morning that the collaborative Nimbin Central and Kyogle High School team has been selected from a highly competitive field to participate in the 2019 Game Changer Challenge. NIMBIN CENTRAL SCHOOL “Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible”

From the Relieving Deputy Principal Hi everyone!

Last Thursday saw a major milestone for the school with the installation of our Yarning Circle. Situated under the trees just down the hill from the Canteen, the Yarning Circle will serve as a place for staff and students to gather informally as well as an outdoor learning and meeting space. The rocks used in the Yarning Circle are basalt sourced from the quarry just north of Lismore, whilst the gold sand is sourced from the Tweed Coast. Uncle Gilbert will be conducting a smoking ceremony at our Bundjalung Day celebrations on Monday 1

st July.

This week has been a big week for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) with the visit of the STEMshare experts to the school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. STEMshare is a Melbourne based company committed to helping develop the creative, critical, analytical and computational thinking skills of today’s children by providing schools affordable access to modern STEM equipment. They have been employed by the Department of Education to support schools with equipment and expertise in table robotics, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), filmmaking, PC robotics, 3D printing and coding. The visiting experts worked with our Primary classes on Monday and Wednesday and our Year 7’s, Year 8’s and Stage 5 ICT class on Tuesday. Kids were engaged in programming robots to follow pathways across the floor as well as building their own using Lego Mindstorm kits. They also were able to use the Virtual Reality goggles to see the world through the eyes of animals and to explore deep space. Needless to say the students had a great time and were deeply engaged in the program.

K—6 NEWS And so the slight touch of winter is starting to come into our lives. The chilly mornings, frosted grass and warm fires at night. It is so lovely to enjoy the beauty and nature of the Winter season. It’s Lantern Parade Time! This Saturday 22nd June We are all set to go and the lanterns look great. The students had a wonderful time making, creating and decorating their lanterns. The whole experience was so beneficial for everyone. Information flyers have already been given out. Here are some details in brief for those who didn ’t receive them. INSTRUCTIONS ON THE NIGHT: Gather at Victoria Road (next to the skate park) at 4.30—4.45pm. No later! The Information desk will have a Parade Order Map to find your section. Look for the ELEPHANT. The Parade will DEPART at 5.30pm sharp. Wear: warm clothes & good comfortable footwear. Bring: Rugs, tarps, folding camp chairs to sit on, water, snacks etc. A backpack is useful to carry these things in. No flames are to be lit. All lanterns need to be battery powered. I will be able to provide this year’s lantern makers with a battery powered light. Lights can be purchased for $2.50 at the information desk. Elephant Lantern Carriers Wanted We need eight people at a time to help us carry our feature lantern. During the course of the Parade the lantern becomes quite heavy so we need to swap volunteers around. If you can help us out please come and join our team. If you have any questions head over to the website: www.lismorelanternparade.com.au which has a huge amount of information and the program online, or contact the Lantern Parade Shed on 02 6622 6333. Byron Bay Excursion Reminder Yrs 3-6 Monday 23 June K, 1, 2 Wednesday 26 June Thank you for the quick response to the excursion notes. Most permission notes and money are in. A reminder that the bus will be leaving at 9am sharp and that students need to wear school uniform, bring a hat and all food for the day. Hope the whales will be swimming by. It’s going to be a wonderful day. Peer Support Program The Peer Support Program is a wellbeing program which places students at the centre of their learning, empowering them to practice skills and strategies to positively help them navigate life and relationships. Leadership can help our students flourish. Many thanks to Toni and Gail for their professional skills, support and guidance to address the school’s wellbeing and implement the program to our students. “If you are not in the Parade, you watch the Parade. That’s life”. Regards Dian and Primary Staff

FROM THE COMMUNITY LIAISON OFFICER This Year is Moving so Quickly I remember that a year is like toilet paper, the closer you get to the end the quicker it runs out! That is exactly how I feel right now. I feel the year has just got going and already we are planning for next year. On Tuesday 2nd of July we are welcoming any parents or carers of children who may start school in 2020 to come and visit our school to get the feel of the place. We are very proud of what we have to offer and we would like everyone to feel that way while we value everyone's needs and choices. If you know anyone who has children who may start school next year then please invite them along to meet us on the morning of July 2

nd. Details are on the flyer on next page.

I know that teachers are busily writing their semester reports to go out soon. This is a time to reflect on our students’ progress for the year so far and consider if any additional support is needed. Years 11 and 12 are getting very serious about their end of year which is closing in fast. And so the life of the school goes on as it does every year. All support that you give to your child is worth doing. Any word of encouragement, compliment or study support will be worthwhile. They will feel that you value what it is that they are doing and will rise to the occasion. As our children's school year moves along so quickly let us remind ourselves of the value of getting our children to school as often as possible, after a good night's sleep and breakfast to start the day so they are ready to learn. Enjoy your kids! Anne Bowden

CAREERS MARKET DAY

Our Careers Market Day was another great success. Every second year we hold a special day in our school to promote the value of classroom learning as it ties to life after school. For our primary students we aim for the message in the classroom to be “that all of life after school requires literacy and numeracy skills.” The greater the skills, the greater the options. For secondary students it is an opportunity to check out some career options that they may never have considered. We were delighted to have a range of locals sharing their knowledge and skills. These included a horticulturist, a mining surveyor, an Auslan interpreter, an event organiser in the music and entertainment industry and many other generous people who gave their time for our students. We ended the morning with some very excited people on both sides of the tables. Thanks everyone Anne Bowden & Mark Chaseling

Our all singing, dancing, cranking Bahzooley

Thanks to the combined efforts of parents (yummy drinks and desserts), students (great performances, tech crews and roadies) and staff (tasks too many to mention except our awesome band) we have enjoyed another great night of entertainment together.

These community events go beyond geographic boundaries as we entertained guests from many parts of Australia. Funds will assist in the purchase of a new guitar amp, mics and hopefully some LED footlights to make future performances easier to video and photograph. We welcome feedback from you about how to make these events even better in the future. Thank you for your ongoing support of our creative kids.

A special thanks to Luca & Khatia for their fabulous MC work!

Gizmos, gadgets and fun, fun, fun

Our students have been creating and designing their own Lego robots, mapping with Ozobots, using Bluetooth Bluebots and a range of other exciting new technologies in Stemshare bootcamps this week. These kits will be on loan to our school next term through the public schools StemShare program so that teachers can not only teach digital technologies but can use these tools to teach their own subject area content.

While Kindy and Stage 1 & 2 are already using Beebots to help them learn literacy and numeracy, these next generation devices take it all to a new and fun level. Makey Makey poetry slams and engineering design projects are tested and driven to extend creative possibilities in learning.

Library Book Muster Please send back in all Library books and check if your student has any on loan. Our Library has some wonderful books so we hope that they keep circulating rather than languishing under a bed somewhere. Our system is: we send regular ‘reminder of overdue loan’ emails to secondary students, then a paper reminder for the third request, followed by a letter requesting payment to replace the book. Primary school students are given three paper reminders, personal verbal requests and then a letter asking for replacement of the book. If you give us an email address, we can also email reminders to parents. If you know you have returned it to us (not the town Library RTRL) then we can start searching here on shelves and in classrooms. There is a black returns box at the front office. Thanks for your assistance with this.
