PREP Dear families and carers, thank you all so much for helping your child prepare for the fabulous Fluoro Fun Run last Friday. We all enjoyed being out there, cheering each other on and having a wonderful, colourful, active time. We look forward to seeing parents and carers this Thursday for our Home Reading Information Session. Please check with your class teacher for the time your session begins.

YEAR 1 The term is underway and Year 1 are busy in their classes. A reminder of the importance of supported home reading. Student skills really improve when continued at home. Well done to all of the students who participated in the Fluoro Fun Run on Friday.

YEAR 2 Year 2 have had a wonderful start to Term 2. We would like to remind all to continue the fabulous work completing homework and to read, read, read each night. Ten minutes of reading each night is all it takes to improve your child’s reading.

YEAR 3 A fantastic effort from all the Year 3 students who participated in the Fluoro Fun Run. Read! Read! Read! Students are reminded to return class readers so that new books can be borrowed. Library borrowing can also be done during class library visits, before school and during lunch breaks. Our students can now borrow 2 books at a time.

YEAR 4 We are underway with our learning for Term 2. In English we are learning about research skills such as posing questions, sourcing information, summarising and finding the main idea. If any learning opportunities arise with your child around these areas please try and implement some of these skills into everyday life. The Kitchen/Garden Program is back again for Term 2. If you are interested in volunteering then please get in contact with your child’s teacher.

YEAR 5 Term 2 is well underway and Year 5 are totally immersed in the Great Barrier Reef and all it’s wonders. Your child will have brought home a Bike Education letter, please ensure it is signed and returned as soon as possible to ensure they can fully participate in the fabulous lessons we have planned for them. Camp notes will be coming home soon as well so keep your eyes peeled for

Music Notes

All beginner woodwind, brass and percussion players will receive a note this week during their instrumental lesson and are invited to join our Junior Concert Band. Rehearsals are every Monday morning and will begin in Week 4 (Monday 13 May). Students will meet at the PAC at 7:30am to set up and rehearsal will begin 7:45am. Those students who play an instrument and do Tri Academy can alternate weeks. Mrs Stevenson and I recently completed a beginners Taiko drumming class and will be continuing later in the year. Together we are hoping to set up a small Taiko drumming group at school, and hopefully if successful, will grow into a much larger one. We are going to begin with making our own Taiko drums. We are looking for donations please of two small, clean car tyres, also any clear packing tape (the wide variety). If anyone has these items spare, please contact Miss Curtis at [email protected] or Mrs Stevenson on [email protected]. We are also seeking a number of students in Years 4 and 5 who might wish to join this group and help out, not only making the drums and equipment, but also playing as part of our Taiko Team. If any students in Year 4 or 5 are interested they need to speak with Miss Curtis or Mrs Stevenson by the end of this week - Friday 3 May. A reminder that all school ensembles - choirs, concert band and orchestras are performing at The Big Family Breakfast on Wednesday 22 May. Detailed notes will arrive home soon. Miss Curtis

High School in 2020?

YEAR 6 Congratulations to all the students who received their Bronze and Silver Awards of Excellence on Friday. Also, it was wonderful to see so many Year 6 students getting into the spirit of the Fluoro Fun Run and enjoying themselves with their friends. Well done to House Captains for leading the younger students in their races with such enthusiasm!

Host Families WANTED!

Students from Japan will be coming to our school in Term 3 and we are seeking

potential host families. If you are interested in hosting or would like to know more about

what hosting entails, please contact, Sensei Regan Stevenson

Parents of Year 6 Students Have you been to the high school information evenings? Have you enrolled in a high school yet? Have you received enrolment papers for your intended high school? Have you started the process of enrolment? If you haven’t done any of these things it’s time to start the process. Here are some hints and information:

Enrol Now! The sooner, the better.

Even if you are in the catchment of the school of

choice make sure you enrol early. If you change your mind, move areas or are accepted into another school you can withdraw your application.

If you have applied for a school and you are out of

its’ catchment, apply for an alternative now - you can always withdraw the application.

Our office has enrolment packs for Cairns SHS and

Trinity Bay SHS, if you need one.

If you can’t get the application forms back to CSHS

or TBSHS, send it in with your child and we can arrange for it to be taken.

Read all the application forms thoroughly to make

sure you have ALL the information and documents required, especially copies of proof-of-residence.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to make an appointment to see me. Ngari Abbott - Deputy Principal Y5/6

Student Achievements

We are now into the last weeks of Term 1 STEMTastic. For the Monday Group, last day and graduation will be on 13 May. The Wednesday group will graduate on 1 May and the Thursday Group will graduate on 9 May. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend graduations. There will be a badge ceremony, project testing, speeches, a “sprint challenge” and cake! Remember, STEMTastic always stays open for one more week (Mon/Wed/Thu) for those students who were absent during the term block and would like to complete their projects.

We have seventy-four Term 2 students commencing in Week 6 (begins 27 May) Letters will be sent home this week. The ten week term block will end on 5 August and I’m excited that all the groups will graduate in the same week.

IMPORTANT: Keep an eye out in future newsletters for Term Three STEMTastic Academy enrolment forms. Our new enrolment system requires applicants to submit either an online electronic form or complete the application form included in the Leading Edge newsletter - sign, snip submit. Please no more emails. I will advertise again in successive newsletters to ensure all students have equal opportunity to join the program.

Advanced Academy (Coding Café) is scheduled for this term. Thanks to the fantastic response to this course, there will be two separate groups. The first group will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6-8:30pm on 22 and 29 June and 5 July. The second group will meet 12, 19 and 26 June. Letters of confirmation will be sent home in coming weeks. I am wrapped to see so many students wanting to code microcontrollers and build solar power stations. Coding Café will be held again in Term 4.
