Hi everyone,
Thank you to our school leaders in Year 6 for
your leadership last week. The students led
our NAIDOC week celebrations, themed Heal
Country, and then planted seedlings for Planet
Ark National Tree Planting Day. Our Peer Sup-
port groups will now care for the plants as they
continue to grow. Thank you also to Mr Ham-
melswang, Mr Pullen, Miss Shirley and Mr
Wood for your organisation and preparation.
Last week we were visited by some First Na-
tions Elders from the Garbutt Magpies. They
gave a presentation to the Year 5 and 6 stu-
dents about the legacy of the Garbutt Magpies
within the North Queensland Community.
Their message was one of respect and enter-
prise for the future. This visit is part of the Gar-
butt Magpies Cup; good luck to the students
who will be participating tomorrow.
Good luck also to the students who are in-
volved in the band workshops at Pimlico State
High School. We hope that you have had a
great time meeting new people, having fun and
learning more about music. Next Monday we
are holding the Arties Entertainer of the Year
competition. With 11 of our students participat-
ing, I look forward to seeing our talented stu-
dents performing.
It has been a tough week this week for all of us
at school as we lost one of our very special
people. Mr Andrew was not just a colleague,
but a mate and a respected friend to all. He
has been an integral part of our school commu-
nity and our positive culture for the past eight
years. Thank you for your compassion and for
the many offers of help in maintaining the
amazing grounds that Andrew cultivated and
cared for. As always, we are doing everything
we can to support staff and students through
this very sad time. Our thoughts remain with
his family at this time, especially with his wife
Helen. He will be missed.
Please look after each other and continue to be
kind. Take a moment to reflect and smile.

For our English assessment this term,
the children have to write a rhyming
couplet. To help them with this at
home, please practise rhyming words
with your child (you only need to do it
orally). Ask them if two words you say
are rhyming words and get them to tell
you another word that rhymes. You can
remind them that rhyming words sound
the same at the end, but different at the
beginning. Most of the children are get-
ting quite good at this, but there are still a
few who are struggling with it, so some
extra help at home would be great,
thanks.
Please ensure that your child reads their
home reader and practises their sight
words every night. We have noticed that
there are quite a lot of children who aren’t
practising every night, doing this daily
will help improve learning outcomes.
If you have any questions or concerns,
please don’t hesitate to contact me,
either by email or see me after school.
Have a great week.
Year 2 Jacky Roper We have been continuing with our pro-
cedural writing and having lots of fun in
the process. We linked our writing with
our work in Maths on fractions. The
students made fairy bread and worked
on their fraction knowledge at the same
time by cutting up their bread into
halves, quarters and eighths.
We have finished reading our unit book,
‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and
have loved the entertaining way Roald
Dahl taught us about procedures. We
can’t wait for our assessment, writing a
procedure for a horrible recipe for a
horrible grandma!
Our Science unit, ‘change and grow’,
has been on full display in our class-
room, with our mealworms continuing to
grow. We have seen different stages of
their lifecycle, including; larva, pupas
and adult beetles. Milo has especially
been enjoying this unit and has gobbled
up any spare mealworms. This week we
have been discussing how some animal
babies look different to their parents
and some are similar.
For our Arts unit this semester we are
looking at dance. We have looked at
some inspiring dance videos to start the
unit, including some great flashmobs!
We have learnt how to warm up our
bodies with some warm up games and
stretching activities on Gonoodle. As
we continue throughout this unit we will
continue to develop confidence with
simple dance moves.
A very big thank you to all our families
that have donated recycled materials for
our science projects. We are learning a
lot about materials and their properties.
We enjoyed designing and creating with
these materials. We have started our
Lego collection, with some kind dona-
tions and we will continue to search for
more. Donations welcome!
We have learnt more about writing pro-
cedures over these last few weeks. We
have looked at recipes and craft ideas.
We helped Mrs Hay learn how to make
fairy bread and we all followed the steps
to make some ourselves.

The weather has been beautiful and per-
fect for our Schools National Tree Plant-
ing which happened last week. The Year
3 class went on a nature walk around our
beautiful school and used their senses to
describe what they could hear, smell,
see and feel around our trees. They dis-
covered lots of amazing creatures and
even spotted a koala.
In English we are still working on writing
a retell from a different perspective. In
Maths we have completed a unit about
patterns and addition and are now learn-
ing about angles.
We conducted an investigation of heat
transfer in Science and are learning
about hardware and software in Digital
Technology. HASS has seen the class
expand their knowledge of the Torres
Strait Islands and the meaning of ‘country
and place’ to Indigenous Australians.
Some of the students have painted dried
leaves using the colours of the Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander flags. We will
be stringing these together to create a
festoon (one of our recent spelling
words) for our classroom.
How amazing that we could experience
the Strand Ephemera last Thursday. So
many incredible art installations and we
were lucky enough to find some of our
incredible marine creatures on display.
The students have been engaging with a
text, ‘Eliza Bird’ about a young convict
girl aboard the Charlotte destined for
Botany Bay. This week they will be
asked to imagine themselves as a young
convict child at the time of the landing at
Botany Bay. They will be asked to de-
velop a cohesive text through the use of
linking devices and convey a perspec-
tive of a particular historical context. In
the coming weeks they will deliver their
spoken recount in the role as their char-
acter.
We’ve also had some fun in Science ex-
ploring materials, their properties and
uses. We have been conducting investi-
gations and looking deep within using
iPad microscopes.

Year 5 Jodie Wilson
I can’t believe we are not far off the mid-
dle of term 3 already! Year 5 are well
underway with their units, and are work-
ing very hard. We have been having
many discussions about growth mind-
set, and how it important to train our
brain for learning. Last week we fo-
cussed on “Effort is Key”, and the class
was set a challenge, to work on one
mathematical concept in class, as well
as practise for homework. It was great
to see many students feel positive by
the end of the week with this concept,
because they worked hard to put the
effort into developing this skill.
This week, we are focussing on “Failure
is learning”. As Thomas Edison ex-
plained to a reporter who asked him
how he felt after failing 10,000 times
before achieving success: “I didn’t fail.
The lightbulb was an invention with
thousands of steps. Steps that I made,
along with several other people before
me. You can only call something failure
after you’ve stopped trying.”
Thomas Edison, and many other suc-
cessful people, see failures as opportu-
nities - little setbacks in our journey
forward. After a little activity to allow
students to see this, they reflected on
what zone of regulation they were in,
and what strategy they used to over-
come this. We had a great class discus-
sion about how we have noticed many
athletes in the Olympics using growth
mindset to help them through their set-
backs. It is very important for every-
body to understand and develop their
mindset, to help them move forward,
and it is great to see the Year 5 students
working hard at this already, even if it
can be more of a challenge than they
would expect. Please discuss these ide-
as with your children throughout the
term, and ask how they are regulating
their emotions during challenging
times. Together, we can help our chil-
dren achieve, even if just a little success
at a time.
Keep Smiling. Keep Striving.
Kitchen Garden
Our school garden has a
bumper crop of Roselles
which we have been busy
picking and storing in the
freezer.
The Roselle is a type of Hibis-
cus, whose flower pods can be
used for jam or tea, it’s leaves
can be used for curry, the cal-
cyces for food colouring and
the stems can become a fibre
for cloth making.
With help from the students,
we hope to be enjoying some
delicious jam in the near fu-
ture.
Happy Gardening from the
Garden Crew

Another busy fortnight has happened,
and we have lots going on. We have
some children involved this week in the
Supernova Band Workshop in Towns-
ville. Several children will participate in
the Garbutt Magpies AFL competition on
Wednesday, and the whole class has
been invited to participate in the ‘Town
High Experience Day’ on Friday.
We have made good progress in our
English unit. We have viewed and dis-
cussed both the literary and factual
texts, and now we need to analyse the
texts at a deep level to be able to ex-
plain and describe how the authors’
devices and choices act to persuade
readers.
In Maths we have explored multiplica-
tion by two digit numbers, we’ve contin-
ued our work on averages, and we
looked at line graphs, both interpreting
information from given graphs and cre-
ating graphs from data.
In our HASS work we have begun to in-
vestigate demographic data about coun-
tries, to see what else we can learn and
infer about other countries, and there-
fore about Australia.
For Peer Support last week the leaders
took their group members through a
variety of activities related to NAIDOC.
Connected to this, but also tying in
Schools National Tree Planting day, the
leaders each planted a tree in the gar-
den near the library. Each Peer Support
group will have the opportunity to water
and watch their tree grow over time.
Please be sure to contact me if you have
any concerns regarding your child’s
progress.
Year 6 Martin Hammelswang
In Session 4, the Leaders asked their
groups if they had the chance to show
kindness during the week. Everyone fo-
cused on a new personal quality, which is
patience. We completed a chart to show
what patience looks like, sounds like and
feels like. The groups also discussed how
hard it can be to be patient in different
circumstances.
In Session 5, the Year 6’s explained what
NAIDOC is and the theme for this year’s
celebration “Heal Country’. This means
that if we stop polluting the planet and
being wasteful the people in our country
will heal. We also discussed the history
and meanings behind the Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander flags. The group
read a traditional Aboriginal or Torres
Strait Islander story. We coloured in a
large NAIDOC poster to celebrate these
cultures. The Leaders planted a bottle-
brush tree for Schools National Tree day
on behalf of their group, which also con-
nects to the theme ‘Heal Country’. The
trees are planted in the garden between
the library and Block B.
