Election Day Special Events! Students at Dahlgren School voted for the national vegetable on Election Day. Mrs. Margie Stevens, Dahlgren School volunteer extraordinaire, was the brainchild of this activity which grew out of a unit in Ms. R’s fifth grade class about the presidential election. Since our students are too young to vote for president, we identified something else we could use to model the election process.

Once it was discovered that the United States has no official national vegetable, we were off to the races! With the help of Mrs. H and student council, three candidates were identified. Students made campaign posters supporting their favorite candidate. The day before the election, Miss H, Mr. P, and Mrs. D transformed the auditorium into a debate stage and Moderator Sertonius grilled our candidates: Mrs. Potato Head (Kelsi), Cornelia Cobb (Sania) and Hetta Lettuce (Salma). The next day Mrs. M converted the lunchroom into our polling place; students received voter registration cards, “official” paper ballots, and then used clickers to cast their votes. The votes were tallied and the potato received the most votes. Mr. Dick McGowan, another extraordinary volunteer who provides additional opportunities for students receiving gifted services, led an analysis of the election results and crunched the numbers with the candidates. Many thanks to everyone who pulled together to give our students this wonderful, authentic learning experience.

Dahlgren Tigers, As we progress through November I am reminded of all the things I am thankful for. My family always comes to mind first, but I have to say I am truly thankful to add Dahlgren to that list. The community and staff have enriched my days and for that I am grateful.

Our visit with our District Superintendent went very well. She enjoyed her visit and had many great things to say about our school and community. We look forward to her returning and observing continued progress in our school.

We also had a nice turn out for our School Board meeting and Principal’s Coffee this week. It is extremely important to hear your voice as we continue through the school year. Your concerns and praises are valuable in our plan- ning.

Lastly, I would like to say thank you to all who have served or who is still serv- ing. As a Veteran, spouse of a Veteran and educator to military families I can truly say it is an honor to serve your families and your contribution to our country is greatly appreciated.

Homemade Bread Day November 17 Bakers of the world, rise up and bake some bread, for NOVEMBER 17 is Homemade

Suggested Recipe of the Day: Pump kin Nut Bread

Ingredients:

Bread has been made for thousands of years. Natural, sus- tainable grains from all over the planet, in many: other than wheat, have been used to produce that region’s ver- sion of “bread”. Estimates date it's origin back to 5000- 10,000 B.C.

Modern day lifestyles has relegated homemade bread to the world of specialty baking and holiday baking. People just don't have time to bake home made bread. We turn to a quick "run" to bakeries and grocery stores, for our bread needs. The arrival of automatic bread makers has created a small resurgence of home made breads, especially spe- cialty breads.

The purpose of this day is easy to understand.--- to make home made bread, and to encourage you and me to make tasty and nutritious bread; not just run out and buy a bag of chemical preservatives that make nice toast.

So, take a little time out of your busy day, and make some bread. Your nose, your taste buds, and your whole family will be glad you did.

How to Make Pumpkin Nut Bread:

1.Preheat oven to 350 ° F. 2.Stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and spices.

3.In a separate large bowl, combine pumpkin, sugar, milk and eggs. 4.Add dry ingredients, and butter to pumpkin mixture until well blended. 5.Mix in chopped nuts. 6.Pour into greased loaf pans(9x5x3). 7.Bake in oven for 45 to 55 minutes. 8.Check with a toothpick. It is done when it comes out clean.

1 cup Fresh Preferred or, if you must….Canned…...Pumpkin

2 cups Sifted Flour 1 cup Sugar 2 Whole Eggs 1/2 cup Whole Milk 1/4 cup Soft Butter

1 cup Chopped Walnuts (or nut of choice)

2 teaspoons Baking Powder

1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda 1 teaspoon Cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg 1 teaspoon Salt

This quarter has offered a change up in elective styling's for out Middle School Students. The 7-

8 grade students have just been introduced to drafting or as some call it: mechanical drawing. Students

are learning to use the tools made for creation of layouts and designs. They are

realizing that the T-Square is their best friend and they are also learning the im-

portance of neatness, organization, and accuracy in executing their work.

Middle School Social Studies

All middle school social studies students have completed a DBQ (document-based question) research and writing assign-

ment. Eighth graders in U.S. History completed a unit on why so many settlers died in Jamestown. Seventh grade World

Geography students answered the question, “The Silk Road: Great Advancements or Disastrous Consequences?” Sixth

grade World History students learned about Hammurabi’s Law Code from 1400 B.C.E. and wrote essays about how just it

was to the victim, the accused, and society as a whole. Their in-depth study of these topics generated a lot of good discus-

sions and helped the students organize and improve their writing skills.

Octogenarians Ira and Gladys West have been annual visitors

to Dahlgren School for the past decade. Their journey from

humble beginnings in southern Virginia to multiple college

degrees and high-ranking positions here at Dahlgren inspired

our students to dedicate themselves to their studies and their

dreams. They shared the challenges they faced through inte-

gration and the civil rights

movement.

As one student remarked,

Kindergarten welcomes Jeanne Wall, a guest artist from Wolf Trap, who will be helping us learn with drama and puppetry. We are very excited that she will be in our classroom the week of No- vember 14th. She will also be +giving a family workshop at the CDC on Thursday, No- vember 17th from 3:30- 5:00pm.

We look forward to sharing our experience with our par- ents!

We are enjoying our new space this year to eat lunch. We have lots more space and are able to group students by grade level. Although things are go- ing pretty smoothly in the lunch room, I would like you to consider a few things

as you prepare your child's lunch every day. Many chil- dren are asking for water during lunch. We do not have a drinking fountain in the lunch room and this requires us to give a cup of water to children who ask. We are going through a lot of cups. It would be helpful for your child to have a refillable container for water. Preferably one with a wide neck to make pouring easier and a lid to minimize spillage. Many children bring in juice pouches or juice boxes and finish them quickly or have already drank them for snack and ask for water. You may want to check with your child about this and provide an extra drink.

Counselor’s Hoot

PSAT – Our 8th grade students took the PSAT 8/9 on Thursday, October

27th. Results will arrive this winter and I will meet with students individually to review and explain information about how to inter- rupt their scores and how they can plan to improve their scores. The PSAT 8/9 is tightly aligned with the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 10, it establishes a baseline for college and career readiness as students enter high school. MENTOR PROGRAM – Our Mentor Program is a collaborative ef- fort designed to enhance the educational experience of partici- pating students. Mentors meet weekly with their Mentee Stu- dents to provide guidance and support with an emphasis on aca- demic achievement. Student progress will be closely monitored and assessed by their teachers and feedback will be shared with parents.

Our Mentor Program will begin this month. We are pleased to have had such a great response from the Dahlgren Community. Our Mentors meet each Thursday in the Media Center with our Mentee Students from 2:50 – 3:45 pm. To learn more about the Dahlgren School’s Mentor Program, ask your child’s teacher.

Pre K is eagerly anticipating a visit from Wolf Trap in the month of No- vember!

Wolf Trap in an institute for early learning through the arts. Our visiting artist will be Jeanne Wall. She will be

using drama, creative movement, music and puppetry to rein- force educational concepts we are learning in class.

Wolf Trap has visited the school for many years. It is a lot of fun and is very engaging for the students. Wolf Trap will be in Pre k from 9-9:45 each day, except Friday, the week of No- vember 14.

We are looking forward to this opportunity.

In honor of the

Month of the Military Family, Dahlgren School

will hold its THIRD ANNUAL

Turkey Dinner Run on

NOVEMBER 18th at 10:30.

Students will be in groups of grade levels (heats) and will race to win a frozen Thanksgiving Turkey for their family!

The first place boy and girl in each heat will be awarded turkeys.

Second and third place boys and girls in the heat, will earn a prize from the prize table.

Afterward, we invite our parents to stick around, spread out a blanket, and eat a brown bag/basket, picnic lunch with their child. (In case of bad weather/cold/rain, this will be shifted to the gym)

Come out, have fun, and support our stu- dents and cheer on your child(ren)!

Students, boys and girls in grades K - 4th are welcome to join . Students in grades K to 2nd must have a parent present at all practices to attend. We will cheer at all home basketball games.

Come out to the team meeting on Nov. 15 at 3:00 pm in the Gym.

Practices will be on Tuesday and Thursday 3-4pm. Coach Heather will be our coach for this season. .
