PRINCIPAL’S REPORT This newsletter will be the last newsletter for the term. Two weeks ago, Grade 7 and Grade
8 students had their camps; from all reports, the camps were very successful and students and
staff had a wonderful time. I am sure the positive experiences and memories will last a
lifetime. We hope the camps helped build positive relationships and a strong connection
between students and staff. I would like to thank all the staff who spent three days away from
their families to attend camp and a special thank you to Miss Sheahen and Mr Oliver for
organising the camps.

Communication to Parents
As communicated in previous newsletters, we are looking at options to send out information
to parents via electronic means. We know that some schools are sending all information
home to parents via a Skoolbag App. The App is free to download and would give parents
access to all school newsletters as well as reminders and calendar events. It is also possible
to follow information we have posted on Facebook. It will take 2 to 3 weeks for us to have
the App created and made available for parents to download through the Apple App Store or
the Google Play Store. We will send out more information at the start of Term 2. If you
would like to find out more about the App go to: http://www.skoolbag.com.au/

Students with a Social Conscience
I have been overwhelmed by the wonderful leadership Kelvyn Linton displayed at our last
school assembly. He delivered a moving speech to educate others about mental health disorders, in particular bipolar disorder. As you may be aware, Kelvin is embarking on a
500km walk from Port Arthur to Latrobe High School with his father. They are fundraising
for Black Dog, an organisation that supports people with mental illness and bipolar disorder.
On Monday 20 April (first day of Term 2), Kelvin and his father will walk into Latrobe High
school at 12:30pm. We have organised the following activities to help support Kelvyn’s
venture:
Students, Parents and Community Members can donate money at the front office.
On Monday 20 April, we will hold a barbecue fundraiser at school (sausages $1.50,
Hamburgers $2, vegie-burgers $2). I hope all students can support this
worthwhile fundraiser by bringing some money along for the barbecue.
A guest speaker from Black Dog will speak to our Grade 9 students to increase
their understanding of mental illness and the impact it has on individuals.
On Monday morning, I had a Grade 10 girl give me $210 as a donation for ’Relay for Life’.
She explained that, “I would like to support this cause by donating the money I have earned
whilst working part-time.” Members of her family have suffered and are battling cancer. She
asked that I do not mention her name, as she wants to stay anonymous. It is her way of
supporting an important cause and she was not doing this for the recognition. It is a lovely gesture and makes
me feel incredibly proud of our youth today.

Reports
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, our first term ‘Progress Report’ will be sent home to parents on
Wednesday 1 April. Grade 7 and Grade 8 students will bring their report home on the Wednesday afternoon.
Due to Grade 9 Camp and Grade 10 Work Experience, Grade 9 and 10 reports will be mailed home to
parents. The reports are intended to give parents an indication of how students have started the year,
particularly in regard to their organisation, effort, progress and behaviour in class. If there are any issues
which arise from the reports, we urge you to contact the relevant teacher at the start of Term 2. For your
reference, I have attached the reporting rubric that indicates the ratings your child may receive.
**************** Uniform
It is good to see that our students have started the year in such a positive manner and the high standards are
being maintained. As the weather cools, we remind students of the need to ensure that uniform requirements
are being met at all times. The only acceptable colours for boys are grey shorts, grey trousers or navy blue
Adidas Reserve Pant. Other types of blue tracksuit type pants are not allowed. We now have LHS soft shell
jackets (Navy Blue) available for purchase at the school office and LHS puffer jackets (Navy Blue) will be
available for purchase at the start of Term 2.

Grade 10 Work Experience and Mock Interviews
Each year, the Rotary Club of Latrobe voluntarily conducts mock interviews for our Grade 10 students.
Interviews will be held tomorrow, Friday 27 March, in the Latrobe Memorial Hall Supper Rooms. These are
the requirements:
Wear neat clothing suitable for the position you are applying for;
Remember to take all relevant documentation to the interview (references, certificates, resume
etc.);
Research the occupation you have applied for, so you have a deep understanding of the skills
required for the position;
Stay in class until 20 minutes before your interview time, sign out before you leave, then walk
down to the Latrobe Memorial Hall where you will wait until you are called for your interview.
All Grade 10 students who applied for Work Experience, have received their work placement details and
information. Students are reminded that they should have contacted their employers either personally or by
phone, to introduce themselves and make arrangements such as starting times, lunch arrangements, finishing
times and dress requirements. We hope that Work Experience is a positive experience for all students.
I would like to sincerely thank the Latrobe Rotary Club for conducting the mock interviews and
also our local businesses for hosting our students for their work experience.
****************
Attendance
Thank you to all parents who have been informing us of their child’s absence from school. If students are
absent from school for a period of time, please contact your child’s teachers or the school office to arrange
work to be sent home. It is the responsibility of the student to complete work that they have missed while
absent from school. We appreciate your support with making sure students catch up on their learning, in
order to maintain their results.
Reminder - Student Free Day on Thursday 2 April. We hope you have an enjoyable Easter and term break.

MICROGRAPHY Grade 9/10 Art students have just completed a
unit on Micrography. This style of art is
created by ‘writing’ a picture, as the image is
made up only of words. Micrography is a really
effective way to teach students about shade
and tone.

Thanks to all the students and staff who have made
me feel very welcome over the last two weeks.
I spent the first two days last fortnight at the Grade
8 camps, and I had a great time getting to know many
of you.
I look forward to the time I have been given at
Latrobe High. It really is a special school.
It is very different for me as I have been at primary
schools before, but already I like the difference.
We will be starting Breakfast Club this Thursday and
Friday, and I am looking forward to seeing you there.
My door is always open for a chat.

GRADE 9 REPORT
Next week, the Grade 9 students will be venturing out
on their Grade 9 Camp. The three days allow students
to experience many outdoors activities they may not
have had the opportunity to try before. It is important
for students to return all relevant permission forms to
be able to participate. If your child is not
participating in Grade 9 Camp, it is compulsory
they attends school. Regular school will continue
for this group of students. If you have any questions
regarding camp, please contact me at the school.
Congratulations to the following students who have
received Strength Awards over the past two weeks:
Zac Enright, Kaleb Richards, Connor Reed
Delaney, Rachel Bentley, Brittany Nibbs, Tyler
Lister and Eve Bell. It is great to see Strength
Awards continuously being given out to students.
Now that the weather is becoming cooler, we have
noticed a few non-school jackets being worn. These
are not part of the school uniform and therefore
cannot be worn at school. We have many uniform
options for students, ranging from hoodies, puffer
jackets, school jumpers to cardigans. If there is an
issue regarding the purchase of one of these items,
please contact me so we can sort something out. We
pride ourselves on the wearing of our school uniform.
I hope everyone enjoys their Easter and has a happy,
safe break.

GRADE 10 REPORT
As the term draws to a close, it is very important that the students continue to work hard and finish
strongly. The cold weather has brought a change in dress, and as a result, some students are wearing non-
school jackets, hoodies and pants. It is very important that all students are wearing correct uniform at all
times. If your child attends school and does not have correct school uniform, it is required that they give a
note to their homeroom teachers explaining why.
Mock Interviews
Tomorrow, the Grade 10 students will be involved in an initiative that is run by the Latrobe Rotary Club.
Rotary members will act as an interview panel providing the Grade 10 students with an opportunity to gain
experience in the interview process. I wish all students the best of luck.
Work Experience
Work Experience will be held from Monday 30 March to the Thursday 3 April, during the last week of Term 1. Although the Thursday is scheduled for a student-free day, it is expected that the students attend
the day at work. Students have received their information packs and are expected to go through their
packs; they should have returned the ‘Green Permission form’ by Wednesday, and they are required to
make contact with their employer this week. I hope that all students have a great experience in the
workplace.
Grade 10 Hoodie
The order has been placed and it is anticipated that the Hoodie will be ready for Day 1 of Term 2. I can’t
wait to see the finished product and how good we will look as a year group.
Tiling and Aboriginal Art
Selected Grade 10 students were given an opportunity to create artwork as part of the plan to beatify our
outdoor eating area. The project involved giving the
planter boxes a facelift. The group of students also helped
with the construction phase and assisted with the process
of mounting the artwork and tiling the planter boxes. The
following students were involved: Anekka Bresnehan,
Robert Johnson, Tyler Blackaby, Shania-Rose
Connelly, Kayci Smith, Jayden Ivory and Ryan
Cooper. Congratulations and a big thanks go to these
students.
Finally, reports… All students will shortly be receiving
their interim report. It is the perfect opportunity for
them to evaluate their performance and strive to do better. If any parents have any queries about their
child’s report, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Have a safe Easter break; relax and come back ready to
continue with your learning…
If you have any queries
regarding your child,

STUDENTS LEAVING
SCHOOL Appointments
We understand some students may need to
leave school during the day to attend
appointments. If this is the case, it is essential
they follow the school protocols.
Sickness or Injury
If students need to be collected from school
as a result of illness or injury, the office staff
will contact parents. Students should not be
contacting parents through their own
devices. Students still need to follow the
school protocols and sign out when leaving.
School Protocol
This system is in place to keep our records
accurate and ensure the safety of all our
students so please help us by following our
protocols.
A note of permission should be
provided from the parents if it is a pre-
arranged appointment.
Students need to sign out at the front
office and sign in, if and when they
return to school.
Students must be collected from the
front office, not met in the car park or
on the road.
The person who collects the student
must also sign them out.
IF PARENTS NEED TO CONTACT
THEIR CHILD DURING SCHOOL
HOURS, THEY ARE ENCOURAGED
TO RING THE SCHOOL OFFICE ON
64261061 AND A MESSAGE WILL BE
SENT TO THEIR CHILD.
PREP FOR WORK Grade 9 ‘Prep For Work’ students have been busy
going out to local workplaces on a Thursday morning
to learn fundamental work skills that are transferrable
across many working domains. Jobs that students have
been involved in include teacher aide, assistant to the
elderly, baker’s assistant, kitchen hand, waitress, hairdresser and mechanic. We
would like to thank all of the businesses involved in our Prep for Work class for
their continual involvement and support in helping students develop skills and giving them opportunities in the
workforce.
GRADE 7 REPORT
It has been an extremely busy time for Grade 7 students with multiple carnivals, assessment tasks, Grade 7 camp
and much more. Grade 7 camp was an amazing experience for students and staff. It allowed students to build
relationships and experience places in Tasmania they might not get the opportunity to visit. We are very proud
of every student who attended camp. The year group was commended at two places we visited for their
excellent behaviour. We hope this experience is something that Grade 7’s remember for years to come. Below is
a report written by Jacob Ball and Josh Poulton on their time at Grade 7 Camp.
At the recent assembly the Grade 7 grade group was awarded the ‘Shoe’. The Shoe is awarded to the grade
group with the highest participation. We were all excited to win the Shoe and hope to win again at the Cross
Country Carnival.
Congratulations to the following students who have received a Strength Award.
Loghan Hall, Amy Fawkner, James Smith, Blake Weeks, Lily Blackaby, Jacob Ball, Ashtyn Dennsion,
Olivia Watkins, Ella Hingston, Magnus Overdijk, Brooke Stephenson and Courtney Bieman.
GRADE 7 CAMP REPORT
On Wednesday March 11 we packed our bags onto the bus, left school and headed off to Campbell Town for
recess. We got back on to the bus and drove to Coles Bay for lunch. Between Campbell Town and Freycinet,
people on both buses vomited! The road was so windy that lots of people felt sick and some could not hold it in.
One of the highlights on the first day was the walk up to Wineglass Bay Lookout. We took lots of photos. Back
on the bus we headed to Gum Leaves. 7B and 7D went to Swansea for a buffet dinner at the Bark Mill Tavern
and it was delicious. 7A and 7C stayed back for a barbecue for tea. The teachers had to cook 100 sausages and
hamburgers on tiny electric cookers. After tea, we went to our cabins for a goodnight’s sleep. Sadly, not many
people had a good night’s sleep because we were all way too excited.
At 6:30am we were woken up for a 7:00am breakfast. We had to make a tasty lunch pack for our day out. 7A
and 7C went onto the bus to go to Maria Island ferry. When we got to the wharf I remembered that I had left my
lunch back at Gum Leaves so I survived on lollies for the day. On the way to Maria Island we saw 3 dolphins.
When we got to Maria Island we walked to the Painted Cliffs. We went into small groups so we could go around
the corner along the water’s edge. The cliffs looked awesome. Then we played some games on the beach. Mr
Cullis took us for a little walk and we saw an old building. We went back to the ferry, and on the way back the
captain gave us a tour. He told us about the convicts and how they tried to escape the Island. He showed us a
grave stone of one of the men who built the jail at Port Arthur. By this time, some people were falling asleep
because they had not had any sleep the night before.
When we got back to Gum Leaves we played some Minute to Win It
games. Then when the other group got back we went to the big flying
fox across the lake. After dinner, we sat around the camp fire and
toasted marshmallows. Then we played a big game of spotlight. At
about 9:30pm we went to bed and had to give up our phones and
iPads so they did not keep us up all night. When we woke up on
Friday morning we enjoyed breakfast and cleaned our camp site. Then
we got back on the bus and went to Sliders in Launceston. We all had
a good time eating lots of pizza and ice cream. After a long day, we
arrived back at school safe and sound.
We would like to thank Miss Sheahen for all her hard work. Steven
Traill for coming along and helping us. The bus drivers Eric and Phil
for being awesome and putting up with all the vomit. Thanks to Miss
Johnson, Miss Mack, Mr Cullis, Mrs Kerr, Miss Hardy and Dianne
for coming with us.

INTER HIGH SWIMMING
On Wednesday 4 March, a group of Latrobe High’s best swimmers went to
the Burnie Aquatic Centre to compete in the Inter High School Swimming Carnival. Our school placed in fourth position, which is a really good effort
because we are such a small school compared to other schools.
Some of our outstanding performers were: Demi Nicholls, Arabella
Gilles, Eve Bell, Chloe Nicholls, Sarah Turnbull, Christopher West,
Corey Hunt, Bjarke Svendsgaard and Tyler Blackaby, who all placed
highly in Division 1 races. Our Grade 7 girls, Grade 9 girls, and Grade 7 boys
finished third in the 4x50m relay.
Well done to all students who represented Latrobe High School at this carnival. Be proud of your
achievements, as your efforts in the pool allowed us to place in the top four schools on the North West Coast.

Notes in PE
Parents and students are reminded that students need to bring a note to class if they are unable
to participate due to an injury. If students are feeling unwell they will be sent to first aid and sent home if unable to
participate in the lesson. When students bring a note to Physical Education they are not excused from the lesson. They
will be involved in an administrative role or complete a theoretical component.
Effects of Skipping Lunch – decreased ability to concentrate and difficulty focusing.
When you skip lunch, your body slows down your metabolism. The purpose of this is to decrease calorie burn in an
effort to conserve these calories for later use.
When your body does not have access to glucose, which comes from the foods you eat, it turns to glycogen, the stored
form of glucose in the liver. While glycogen serves as a backup source of energy, it only lasts for so long. Once glycogen
stores are depleted, your brain does not have access to glucose. As a result, your ability to concentrate decreases, and
you may have difficulty focusing (Elle Paula, 2015).
GRADE 8 REPORT Term 1 has raced away for Grade 8. One of the highlights has been the Grade 8 Survivor Camp. The students visited
either Fulton Park or Paton Park and were accompanied by Grade 10 Student Leaders, Mr Oliver, Mrs McPhee, Mr
Smith, Ms Jenkins, Mrs Crossin, Mrs Turner, Mrs Henry, Mr Shaw, Mrs Stafferton and Chris (our new chaplain).
Student feedback about the camps has been very positive and included the following comments:
One thing I really liked about camp was
it taught a lot of people team work and was really fun
cooking in my cooking group
competing in the challenges
the experience of spending time with my friends
that we got to build our own hut and cook our own
food
the obstacle course challenge
the nightly auctions
the ice cream challenge
the fashion parade
that Mr Shaw got lost
playing spotlight
getting to know new people
the people in my camp, I could get along with everyone
making new friends and getting closer to everyone
mopping
My favourite memory from camp was
playing spotlight
watching people eat sardines
the water and mud fight
eating ice cream at 6am
the obstacle course and water challenges
the pancake competition
cooking the sheep’s brain and the teacher said it was the
best they had ever eaten
when we built the survival huts
the fashion parade
eating brains and heart
playing stepping stones and slipping
eating challenges because I never thought I
would eat brains
