Principal’s Letter to
Parents
2017 Term One
Week Six
Hi Everyone
In the coming weeks Brooke, Emily, Isla and myself will be welcoming a new bundle of joy into our lives. It will be at
this time that I will be taking leave to help with all things home and family. By my own admission, I did this very
poorly when Emily arrived so one of my goals for 2017 is to put the needs of my family first. I will be taking leave
from March the 6th through to the end of the term.
Mr Wren will be moving into an acting APRE role whilst Mrs Glisson will act as principal during this time. In place of
Mr Wren, I have invited Mrs Claire Carlaw to lead the 1/2 class full time through the remainder of Term 1. Mrs Holden
will fulfil the Art Teacher role during this time. If for any reason you would like to ask any questions or speak to me
regarding this move please contact me through the school office.
I sincerely appreciate your support with this adjustment and if you see me around the grounds during this time, please
feel free to tell me to rack off!
What an absolute cracking afternoon we shared yesterday with the ‘Race for the Golden Pancake’. I absolutely love
afternoons such as these where parents and students alike share in the true sense of community around the grounds. I
have shared a few happy snaps below from the afternoon and keep your eyes out for some footage from the afternoon
online and on our Facebook page.
At the back end of last week you may have seen an advertisement on our Facebook page,
advertising that in Term 2 we are lucky enough to have ‘Holt Bolt’ team visiting our
school. The ‘Holt Bolt’ initiative will see students participate in a range of obstacle course
activities that involve climbing, crawling, sliding, weaving, getting wet and a range of
other activities related to health and fitness. Such activities are a real motivator for students
and the timing of the visit was nominated so as to celebrate the end of first semester and to
acknowledge all of the hard work that our students put into their learning. Parents are
welcome to join us and further details will be released closer to the date.
Thank you to all of the parents who were able to help with the float construction on Saturday. A great deal of progress
was made on the morning with our OLD, GOLD and VERY BOLD ARK. With several events on in town this weekend
we will postpone the planned working bee until later in the term.
Cheers
Ben
We celebrated mass today for Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. You may wonder
why Catholics put ashes on their foreheads. The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the
Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are
scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolise penance and contrition, they are also a
reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His
Divine mercy is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek
that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and penance.
Lent lasts for 40 days, which is the same number of days that Jesus spent in the desert before his entry into Jerusalem on Palm
Sunday. Traditionally, Catholics would fast and abstain from certain foods and activities during Lent, and focus on how they could
change themselves for the better. Today, we focus less on fasting and abstinence, but more on ways that we can help others. For
example, while it is a noble sentiment to give up sweet treats for the 6 weeks of Lent, this doesn’t have an impact on anyone apart
from the person who is abstaining (unless they get very angry about being without sweet food!). However, giving something up
but taking something extra on is a way to ensure that others benefit from our choices. For example, giving up chocolate and
donating the money normally spent on this food to charity, is a more positive action.
At our assembly on Friday, Year 3 will tell us more about Project Compassion, run by Caritas, which we
support each Lent, and each class will be given a box to put any monetary donations into. We hope to
raise some funds for those in less fortunate countries all over the world. One of the ways we will raise
some money is through our annual Fish and Chip Friday, which will take place next Friday 11 March.
Order forms were sent home earlier this week. Please ensure your child returns this by next Tuesday.
On Tuesday, we held the annual Race for the Golden Pancake, to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. There were a range of tactics used to
try to keep our pancakes on the rulers, and we saw some very steady hands and speedy running! The winners in each year level
were as follows:
The overall winner was Joshua Ung, who took home the delicious Golden Pancake. Well done Josh!
This Friday is the World Day of Prayer. We will celebrate this at 7pm in St Joseph’s Church with a mass and light
supper. All are welcome to join in this ecumenical celebration between a number of different Church groups in
town.
Don’t forget that we have our first P&F Meeting for the year coming up on Tuesday 14 March at 7pm in the
staffroom. We would love to see new faces there. We will begin this meeting with an AGM to decide on the
positions people will hold this year, and continue with a general meeting after this.
All the best to the Gray family with the upcoming arrival of Baby Gray. We are all very excited and looking forward to meeting
him or her. We hope Ben and Brooke enjoy having this time together with their bundle of joy. We all certainly appreciate all the
time, dedication and enthusiasm that Ben puts into our school and know how deserving he is of some leave to spend time with his
family.
God bless,
Amy.
Curriculum News Each class started off the year with some work on our twelve core values. Year 4 have been working intensely on several val-
ues and a few weeks ago, they presented a beautiful assembly about the Benedictine value of prayer. They wrote a prayer
about our values together as a class, which I have included below.
Dear Lord,
We have been created in your image.
Help us to bring Peace and Compassion into our St Joseph’s Community.
Lord, hear our Prayer.
Show us how to Listen to everyone and demonstrate Hospitality to each other.
Lord, hear our prayer.
We ask you to teach us to show kindness and Humility to each other.
Lord, hear our Prayer.
In Jesus’ name help us work together in Partnership with students, staff, families and our Community of St Joseph’s.
Lord hear our Prayer.
Amen

LIBRARY NEWS: READ ALL ABOUT IT! Week 6 already! Where is the time going? We hope you have been enjoying the
first few weeks of another school year.
We have been busily exploring the “new look” library and finding out where
everything is! Feel free to pop in and see the changes that have been made. It looks great!
We have discussed school rules and library rules and the use of shelf markers and have introduced a segment called “An Author in
the Spotlight”, where we discuss authors and the books they write. We have introduced JK Rowling (Harry Potter series) and Emily
Rodda (fantasy genre for Middle/Upper School) and Pamela Allen (of “Who Sank the Boat” fame) and Lynley Dodd (Hairy Maclary)
for lower primary/Prep). This will be a regular feature of library lessons.
We are completing our Reading Interest Inventories so that we can match your child’s interests to the books they may like to read.
I have attached an article by Scholastic reinforcing the importance of reading to our children every day. Have a great week!
Kind Regards
Mrs Karen Madden and Mrs Suze McGregor
PS Please ensure your child remembers their library bag each Wednesday in order to
borrow from the library.
