K-6 Athletics Carnival Tomorrow!

We are looking forward to our Athletics Carnival tomorrow, Wednesday, 24th July at Hurstville Oval. Students

are asked to come in sports house colours or sports uniform.

Dance Troupe Classes

Due to the Athletics Carnival tomorrow, all dance troupe classes will be held on Thursday this week (same

times). Any students who are involved in both the Intermediate Dance Troup and PSSA training are to go to

dance.

Student Banking

Due to the Athletics Carnival tomorrow, student banking will be held on Thursday this week.

Disco – Oh what a night!

What an amazing evening we all enjoyed at our recent P & C “Under the Sea” themed disco!

The tunes were cranking, the hall was transformed, our volunteer crew pumped, Garno was dressed for the

occasion and our kids were bright eyed and faces aglow - all of the ingredients for a Friday night of fun!!

Shout out to the Prisuda family and their crew for creating such a magical atmosphere and to each and

EACH and EVERY parent helper who assisted either in the canteen, on security, checking kids in and out,

selling glow sticks and cleaning up at the end of the night!

Thanks also to Mrs Anastasiou and Mrs Harris for your support and well done to our Year 6 students for a

well organised and run glow stick stall.

We certainly have an amazing school community at LPS!

LPS Play Space Consultation Group

Now that the school’s air conditioning project has been completed, our next major project is to replace the

play equipment area near the OOSH building. The P & C are working with the school to contribute funds to

this initiative. I am seeking parent representatives to be part of a consultation group to assist with planning

and design of new play space. LPS students will also be part of the consultation process.

If you would like to join the LPS play space consultation group, please register your interest by emailing or

contacting administration. Ideally, we are seeking 2-5 parent representatives for the consultation group.

LPA Environmental Art Competition – ENTRIES CLOSE THIS THURSDAY

We have already received a number of entries for the Lugarno Progress Association Environmental Art

Competition. Please see attached note for details of how to enter. Just a friendly reminder that entries close

this Thursday, 25th July.

School Uniform

A friendly reminder that our Uniform Shop is open on Monday and Thursday mornings from 8.30-9.30am.

We have seen an increasing number of students who are not wearing school jumpers, jackets and hats. Please

note that there is a lot of pre-loved stock in good condition in the Uniform Shop as well as brand new items.

The wearing of full school uniform is an expectation for our students every day; this includes black school

shoes.

Return & Earn – Let’s get recycling LPS!

We have two blue “Return & Earn” bins in the school located inside the front entrance to the school next to

the P & C Noticeboard (opposite the Paver’s Wall). Parents are most welcome to bring in suitable containers

from home (with the exception of alcohol containers) and place them in the bins. Suitable containers are:

aluminium cans, cardboard popper containers, small and larger plastic water bottles, plastic soft drink

bottles. Our school will then receive 10 cents per container. Please do not use these blue bins to dispose of

rubbish.

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2019 A huge thank you to the LPS community for their support in collecting so many stickers as part of the Earn &

Learn program. Our final count was a massive 45 626 stickers! This will enable us to purchase a number of

new teaching resources for our school.

Shout out to Mrs Fowler and Mr and Mrs Warrington for their time in counting and collating the stickers for

our school. We are so appreciative of your help!

Kindergarten 2020 It’s hard to believe, but we are already starting the planning for our 2020 Kindergarten students. If you have a child who is enrolling at Lugarno Public School next year, we ask that you collect an enrolment from the front office or access one online here: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/going-to-a-public-school/translated-documents/enrolment-application We ask that you also remind friends, neighbours or relatives of the need to enrol as soon as possible –

especially any families who are intending applying as ‘out of area’ enrolments.

There will be an information evening on Wednesday, 21st August from 6-7pm in the Library which will cover

information about school readiness, LPS programs and Kinder transition.

Colour Run Fundraising Prizes

Colour Run fundraising prizes will be distributed to students this Thursday.

Term 3 Physical Education Programs

This term, K-2 students will participate in the Life Skills program and 3-6 will participate in the gymnastics

program. Both programs run for 8 weeks on Thursdays in Weeks 2-9. Please ensure you return your child’s

permission note and payment for these programs so that your child may participate. Notes were sent home

last term and can be found on the school website in Resources/Notes Home section.

K-2 Life Skills PE Program – “Snippets Newsletter”

This term our K-2 students have the opportunity to participate in the Life Skills program

our 3-6 students enjoyed last term.

The program commences next Thursday and runs for 8 weeks. Each fortnight, we will keep you up to date

with what the students are learning about with some tips for activities families can do at home.

~Week 1~ Intro to Healthy Skills for Life and Respect The Life Skills Group program, Healthy Skills for Life Unit 1 will commence next Thursday. The program is a curriculum based Health and Physical Education and Social Emotional Learning program. Each week our Life Skills teacher, Miss Chantelle Kennedy-Bremer will facilitate classes aligning lifelong value based skills, fundamental movements, and positive psychology through various games, breathing techniques, guided stories and relaxation. Please follow the ‘Snippets Newsletter’ and practise the daily activities with your child. We’ve also included one or two ways to practise family self-care. We can assure you it will be fun and a great way to spend a few minutes extra with your child and family. In their first lesson, students will learn breathing exercises which help in calming the mind, building resilience and developing self-regulation. Students will practise specialised movements and skills in games and breath work that are especially designed to calm the nervous system, foster positive relationships and teach problem solving skills. By working in teams, students will be encouraged to use various strategies to complete different tasks, all the while understanding that there doesn’t always need to be a winner or loser but what matters is how well the combination of players on the team work together. By participating in physical activities designed to enhance fitness, students will develop a greater understanding of the impact regular participation can have on health and wellbeing. Our K-2 students can look forward to a fun first session where they will learn ways to calm their bodies, and learn the value of respect through fun games and activities. Parents/Carers: Ask your child to show you the mindfulness practice or breathing activity they learn next Thursday and discuss how it could help them. Family self-care tip: Make time for a family game at least once a week (it could be a physical game or a board game). Try to be fully present while playing that game.

Paver Wall Thank you to Mr Tucker who installed the latest pavers on the LPS Paver Wall during the school holidays.

What a huge term we had with so many success stories on the sporting field. Lugarno Public School students

continue to showcase their talents at the representative level for Sydney East. Special mention must go to

Bailey L, who gained selection in 4 (!!) Sydney East teams: Rugby League, Cross Country, Rugby Union and

Touch. He also represented Georges River District for basketball and AFL. An extremely successful term of

sport for Bailey.

Other students who were selected in Sydney East teams include Diana & Olivia B for basketball and Lukas R

for soccer. An outstanding effort!

Other students who were selected in Georges River District teams include:

Max C, Olivia B, Sienna L, Allie T, Lukas R (Cross Country)

Sienna L, Natasha P (touch)

Natasha P (netball)

Olivia B, Max C (soccer)

Well done to all students who represented the school in sport in Term 2. Your talents and sportsmanship

have not gone unrecognised.

With the Athletics Carnival coming up tomorrow, I am sure we will see other students shining brightly and

we look forward to seeing what you can do in the track and field events.

Special mention to our Stage 1 students who worked hard to develop their hockey skills as part of a hockey

program, and all of our K-2 students who enjoyed the gymnastics program in Term 2.

Stage 2 & 3 school sport have been busy brushing up on their lawn bowls and taekwondo skills and from all

accounts they are learning new skills and having a great time doing so.

Garno’s Adventures with 5/6S

During the last two weeks of term, Garno had the pleasure of spending his time in 5/6S, he was so excited to see what the older students of LPS get up to when they are at school!!

Week 1:

On Monday, Stage 3 attended an excursion to the State Parliament House. Unfortunately, Garno was in the Classroom suffering from Mondayitis. He had a big sleep in…. We told him all about it when we came back and he vowed to always make sure he made an effort on a Monday, so he doesn’t miss out on the fun ever again!

On Tuesday, Garno had a fun day in the classroom learning about ‘How to be

safe around drugs’, alongside 5/6S. He learnt it is important to always speak to someone you trust before taking any medicines.

On Wednesday, Garno joined 5/6S in a Spelling Test. He got 100% on his Spelling Test!!

On Thursday, Garno had a very busy but fun day in 5/6S. Garno joined in with our athletics training and cleared 1.10m in High Jump (with a little bit of help from Max C)! He was really proud of himself because it’s really hard to clear that high. After lunch, Garno enjoyed watching the BBC Ridiculous Rhyme Show. He thought it was really entertaining, silly and funny. In addition to the show, he enjoyed a TV production workshop. He had a really fun time.

Page 15: Principal’s Message - lugarno.nsw.edu.au · ~ Dr Seuss ~ Welcome back! A very warm welcome back to our students, parents and staff. We are very excited about the term ahead! As

On Friday, Garno had another jam-packed day, starting his morning training with the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams, he had a few shots and did really well. Later in the day, Garno had an exciting time with Year 5 and Kindergarten at Buddies. He contributed to a few activities and enjoyed it a lot. Throughout the whole day, Garno was very eager to attend the School Disco. It was ‘Under the Sea’ themed and Garno got dressed in snorkels, a swim cap and some board shorts. He looked very festive and he definitely suited the occasion. He had a fantastic time dancing, selling glow sticks with Year 6 and eating yummy food.

Page 16: Principal’s Message - lugarno.nsw.edu.au · ~ Dr Seuss ~ Welcome back! A very warm welcome back to our students, parents and staff. We are very excited about the term ahead! As

Week 2: On Monday, Garno had a normal day learning in the classroom with 5/6S. He loved learning about our government... Prime Minister Garno has a lovely ring to it!! He also learnt how to participate safely at all times by sitting in lines after recess and lunch. On Tuesday, Garno joined us on the playground at lunch; he really likes coming outside once in a while. His favourite game was playing tips!

On Wednesday, Garno was able to join the whole school in participation of the NAIDOC Week Aboriginal Incursion. He learnt so many interesting things about the Aboriginal culture and their ways of living. He really enjoyed it! On Thursday, Garno joined in on our Life Skills session. Garno and 5/6S learnt about gratitude. When the instructor asked what Garno was most grateful for he said being with the best class in the whole school, 5/6S!! It is safe to say Garno had a crazy two weeks in 5/6S! After a well-deserved break, we are sure Garno will be back, ready for his next adventure!! Written by Olivia B, Jessica M & Sam-Alexis S
