Dear Parents and Carers

As you will be aware the disruption to school routines as a result of the Queensland governmentrsquos response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in changes to the teaching learning assessment and reporting at Waterford State School

The Department of Education has modified the requirements for reporting student academic achievement for Semester 1 2020 Schools will provide a report using the information that they have available from Term 1 and Term 2 2020 This information will be modified from the planned assessment program as many students did not attend school for the last week of Term 1 and they participated in a home based learning program for three to five weeks in Term 2

The Semester 1 student reports from Waterford State School will be available from Wednesday 29th July (Week 3 ndash Term 3) At Waterford State School students will be provided with a level of achievement and effort for 4 Key Learning Areas English Math Science and HASS as per the departmental requirements This level of achievement has been determined using the available information about student learning and achievement from Term 1 and Term 2 as well as their participation during the Learning at Home phase

This week sees the commencement of Term 2 assessment items for students across the school Given the impact to the school term that Covid-19 presented teachers will be assessing and teaching right up until the last day of school Friday June 26th Given the shorter term we are urging all families to ensure students are here everyday until the last day This will ensure that teachers are able to gather the required data to complete report cards

Waterford State School A REMINDER FOR FAMILIES

WINTER IS HERE With winter now here our students are starting to feel the cold When dressing warm it is important that students remain compliant with the Waterford SS Uniform Policy Adherence to the schoolrsquos Uniform Policy demonstrates personal and school pride Items can be purchased through Munch Monitor accounts This it easy for parents while they not permitted on school grounds due to COVID-19 Where stock is available items will be delivered to students the same day If you are unsure of sizing please select the size you usually purchase for your child (or slightly larger if you want them to grow into it) As always our staff are willing to assist where possible so please phone if you have any concerns We have formalised our uniform borrowing process for those who are unable to meet the schoolrsquos uniform requirements From 830am until 845am students can visit the Wellbeing Hub (Old School) and borrow an item of clothing for the day Students will also be sent to the Wellbeing Hub if they are identified by a staff member for wearing incorrect items Staff at the Wellbeing Hub will provide them with the correct item and store their incorrect item for the day ready for collection at 245pm when they return what they have bor-rowed All items are washed after every use The correct Waterford SS uniform is outlined below

It has been great to have some routine back in our lives over the past three weeks Students across Year 3-6 have been working hard to collect their Awesome Tokens by demonstrating our school expectations Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe and Be a Learner With only two weeks left of term their focus is on completing their assessment I am looking forward to reading each childrsquos report card When looking at student report cards I am most interested in the rating given for effort as this is key to success Today I had the pleasure of recognising some of the outstanding effort shown by our Year 3-6 students and I look forward to meeting and speaking with more exceptional students next week

Rewards A reminder that our Week 10 Rewards Session will look a little different this term as we ensure that our plans are COVID safe Our teachers have worked hard to put together activities for our year levels and these are on display in the classroom I know there are students who are already onto Card 5 Well done

If you follow our school Facebook page you would have seen that we shared a number of videos posted by Marsden State High School Applications for the Excellence Programs at Marsden SHS are now open The school offers Excellence Programs in Music Dance Basketball Girls Rugby League Boys Rugby League Football (Soccer) and Academics

The flyer pictured shows some information about the upcoming trial dates for the Marsden SHS Excellence Programs scheduled for the end of July You will also find the registration form which is due back before the trials on the Marsden SHS website

Deadly Choices Term 3Great News Waterford State School is partnering with ATSICHS to deliver the Deadly Choices program for our Year 4 and 5 students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander This program will commence in Term 3 and is very exciting It will be held once a week on Friday afternoonsThe Deadly Choices Healthy Lifestyle program is a health education program aimed at supporting participants to be positive role models and mentors for their families peer group and community by leading a healthy lifestyle This program involves physical activity and cooking Participants are rewarded with program merchandise upon completion of each program subject to full attendance of the programs good behaviour and school attendanceConsent forms were sent home this week for Year 4 and 5 students If your child received a consent form please make sure you return it to your childrsquos classroom teacher prior to the end of term These consent forms are due back by Friday 26th June Please note Involvement in the program is subject to good behaviour and school attendance

FitclubThis week at the Fitclub it was great to see students really wanting to stay active but also have friendly competition We had groups of 3 starting near the hall They would run to the other side near the fence and do 5 star jumps Students would run back and the next partner would do the same thing until everyone has had a turn each

Good Start ProgramVeggie champs For the last 2 weeks of Good Start we have been learning about different parts of the vegetable We sat around our fala (mat) to discuss these things and we used a salu (traditional broom) to sweep away the negativity We also discussed how the colours of a vegetable can help different parts of your body and then we played a game called around the world A student would stand behind another and had to answer a vegetable related question the correct answer moved on until someone got all the way around the circle

ECDP NewsWe were so excited to welcome back all our ECDP friends to the Rainbow room and also welcome some new friends too

We have been learning all about the farm and the animals we might find there We have shared stories including lsquoBig Red Barnrsquo lsquoHattie and the Foxrsquo and lsquoWhere is the Green Sheeprsquo We even made a chicken pen and a barn for our animals

We lsquofedrsquo the animals and practised counting the scoops of food and we even had a go at lsquoshearingrsquo a sheep We have also been learning the Auslan signs for farm animals

HPE Update - Year 3

Music

This term the Year 3 students are exploring the impact of positive social interaction on self-identity The unit ldquoGood Friendsrdquo investigates different types of friendships and examines the qualities we look for in a friend as well as their roles and responsibilities

This week we are looking at how to communicate respectfully with friends to resolve conflicts and challenges After working through and discussing a variety of scenarios students explained in words how they show respect to their friends and then drew what it looks like when they are being respectful to their teachers Below are some of their responses

At Waterford we are respectful use manners greet and farewell are supportive encouraging nice kind caring take care of look out for check in on share with take turns speak with listen to include play with stay with be fair to help encourage cheer up and make others smile laugh and be happy

During this term we have been learning how musical instruments belong to different families of instruments We have also been discovering how each instrument makes itrsquos sound and what happens to the sound if we have more space in the instrument for the sound waves to move around The children will finish this term off by making their own cup drum or maraca in the last week of termHere are some of our Year 3 students getting to experience what it is like to be in the percussion part of the orchestra

Prep NewsIn Prep we have been investigating what makes a Super Star sentence Wersquove been speaking about our finger spaces and making sure we have capital letters at the beginning of our sentences Wersquove also been brainstorming Wow Words to make sure our sentences are interesting and engaging for our readers Great work Prep

Year 1 NewsHere in Year 1 we have been learning about poetry and itrsquos so much fun

We know that poems should entertain like a poem about a cat dancing in the rain

We know that poems should have some rhyme so we use words together like lime time and slime

Wersquove really enjoyed analysing poetry and even made our own poem for you to see

This term in English Year 2 have been learning to express a preference for a character within texts In order to do this we have been comparing characters and discussing their similarities and differences particularly when it comes to their appearance qualities actions and thoughts Last week we compared ldquoThe Gingerbread Manrdquo to the ldquoNinja Bread Manrdquo and as a fun culminating activity we decorated some very yummy gingerbread men that were baked for us by our wonderful tuckshop ladies They were delicious and we had a lot of fun

Students in 3C were eagerly awaiting Monday Week 8 This was our first week borrowing from the myriad range of books seen in our newly furnished library We canrsquot wait to return back to the library and choose new books to read

In 3L we have been learning about things we can do at a farm this is in preparation for our end of term task For our task we are persuading a city kid to visit a farm so we are doing lots of research

HPE Update - Year 3

Music

This term the Year 3 students are exploring the impact of positive social interaction on self-identity The unit ldquoGood Friendsrdquo investigates different types of friendships and examines the qualities we look for in a friend as well as their roles and responsibilities

This week we are looking at how to communicate respectfully with friends to resolve conflicts and challenges After working through and discussing a variety of scenarios students explained in words how they show respect to their friends and then drew what it looks like when they are being respectful to their teachers Below are some of their responses

At Waterford we are respectful use manners greet and farewell are supportive encouraging nice kind caring take care of look out for check in on share with take turns speak with listen to include play with stay with be fair to help encourage cheer up and make others smile laugh and be happy

During this term we have been learning how musical instruments belong to different families of instruments We have also been discovering how each instrument makes itrsquos sound and what happens to the sound if we have more space in the instrument for the sound waves to move around The children will finish this term off by making their own cup drum or maraca in the last week of termHere are some of our Year 3 students getting to experience what it is like to be in the percussion part of the orchestra
