At least 12 months growth for one year’s schooling

Welcome back to our final school term for 2019. There are many exciting events occurring this term, including, swimming, camps, awards celebrations, Christmas carols and our Year 6 graduation ceremony. As always, we will conduct our rewards-based activities in Week 10 and we will continue to offer fun and rewarding activities to students throughout the term, through their VIVO rewards account.

At Murgon State School, we value communication and encourage the formation of a strong partnership between the classroom teacher and the parents/guardians at home. Parental engagement recognises the important role that both parents and teachers play in developing positive attitudes towards learning and education for children, building their motivation and confidence as learners, and fostering their enjoyment of learning.

Learning is not a sprint; it is a lifelong journey, and at every turn there are opportunities for new growth and development. Research shows that a strong parent, child and educator relationship helps boost student achievement and learning outcomes.

With this in mind, if you, as a parent or carer, are unhappy or have concerns relating to your child’s experiences within the classroom or at school, your first contact should be the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher has formed a relationship with your child and understands their likes/dislikes and school-based friendship groups and habits. They are the key link between the school and home.

If you have met with your child’s teacher and still feel the issue or concern has not been addressed, then this concern can be escalated to members of the administration team. You are welcome to make appointments with the Head of Special Education, Deputy Principal or Principal through the school office.

Teachers and parents provide a vital support system to help students flourish. Both groups are important in a child’s educational journey. When parents and teachers communicate and work together effectively, it can significantly impact each student’s long-term success.

Prep/1 DPromoting Reading – Readers are Achievers! It is incredibly encouraging to see the growth in our students’ reading this year. The staff are working very hard to plan, teach and monitor for student success in reading. Your ongoing support with promoting reading and the completion of homework at home is also extremely appreciated, and will only continue to benefit our children.Parents are the first “language models” for children. The language children use is modelled, or based, on what they hear from their parents and caregivers. Children listen, then use words, then read them, and, finally, write them. What they learn at home about words supports success at school. A great deal of the learning that takes place at home is effective because it is not a repeat of school. Parents who talk to their children, and who encourage interaction will lay a healthy platform for academic success. Children will quickly realise that words need not be drudgery, but can be exciting and interesting.Mrs Leanne Gilmour, Master Teacher

Welcome back to Term 4 families of Prep/1. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! This term we are excited to be exploring new Maths concepts including; shapes, money and data. We will incorporate lots of play into our curriculum that reinforces these concepts. We have our very own little shop where students will be exploring and investigating money. Our English unit is based on the novel ‘Hey Little Ant’ by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. It is a wonderful persuasive story. The story is written from both the point of view of the kid and the ant. The book enables students to form an opinion and identify reasons to support it. Towards the end of the term, students will write a letter to either the boy or the ant on the decision they have made about squashing the ant! I think this Language unit will be lots of fun! In The Arts we will be learning about Media Arts. In this unit, students will explore characters and settings in media artworks inspired by a family story. This term we will be attending swimming lessons in our PE sessions. There will be more info to come. Other dates to remember:• Monday 14th October - Come and Play morning for our future Preps of 2020 (Don’t forget to tell anyone you know who is sending their child to Prep next year, how wonderful we are)! • Monday 21st October - Pupil Free Day Always remember to please come and see me if you have any enquiries regarding your child’s progress. Nardia de Bruyn

Welcome back to Term 4. I hope everyone had a lovely holiday and is now ready for the run into the end of the year. Term 4 is always quite busy with extra activities on, so please keep an eye out for notes in your student’s homework folder.

This term in English, we will be learning how to write a letter. The book we are using as a base for our unit is ‘Click, Clack, Moo. Cows That Type’. The cows and chickens in the story write a letter to Farmer Brown demanding blankets to keep warm, or they will go on strike! As part of the unit, we will learn about different animals that can live on a farm, what the farmer has to do to look after them and how to write a letter asking a question. It is hoped that we will also be able to visit the Post Office, to see what happens to letters when we post them.

Just a reminder to make sure your student has their hat, blue folder and a water bottle every day at school.

Mrs Susan Mollenhauer

Prep MWelcome to Term 4. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday break.

This Term we are reading one of our favourite books in English, ‘The Very Cranky Bear’. This text will be used as a stimulus for the procedure we will write towards the end of the term. The students are going to plan and create something that will make Very Cranky Bear happy, for example, a pillow or necklace.

There are many exciting events to look forward to this term, including swimming starting Tuesday Week 3. Notes will be sent home as these events near.

Welcome back to Term 4 everyone! We hope you all had a relaxing and safe break. My name is Megan Kingston and I am completing my final 6 week placement in 4R. I have grown up in Murgon my whole life. I attended Murgon State School from Prep to Year 7 and Murgon State High School from Year 8 to Year 12. I am currently in my final year of a Bachelor of Primary Education and The University of the Sunshine Coast. I look forward to meeting and working with all the students and parents/carers in 4R. In English this Term, students will be exploring persuasive language and features on cereal boxes. Towards the end of the Term students will get to design their own persuasive cereal box. In Design and Technology students will continue to design and create their own pinball machine. Mrs Sarah Ridder & Ms Megan Kingston

This Term in English we are exploring two versions of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ story - ‘The Three Little Pigs’ by Lucy Cousins and ‘The Three Little Bush Pigs’ by Paul Dallimore. Students will explore the images of the wolf within these texts to identify their favourite wolf character and write a persuasive essay providing reasons why they have chosen that character.

The Lecturette Task was sent home this week. The task consists of a retell of your child’s favourite fairy tale. Check dates are written at the bottom of the Task coversheet, with the first checkpoint of planning being due Friday of Week 3.

Welcome back to the 4th and final term of 2019! It is amazing how fast the year has gone.Students got settled straight back into routines after a fun and fulfilled holiday. Here are some important dates to remember:If your child is in Year 3, the final payment for Year 3 camp is due by 3pm Friday the 25th of October. Please note, the entire amount does not need to be paid as a lump sum. The office will accept multiple payments up to this date. Students were given their Lecturette task on Tuesday. They are required to discuss their favourite cuisine, giving multiple reasons as to why it is their favourite. As a class we discussed some examples, such as Italian, Indian, Chinese and Mexican. Lecturette palm cards are due by Monday - Week 5. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. This fortnight’s reading strategy is asking and answering questions. This strategy helps students clarify and comprehend what they are reading. When your child reads their home reader this week, encourage them to ask questions before, during, and after reading.Miss Teilha Keehn

The final Term for Year 6 is always a busy one with plenty of

extra-curricular activities on offer. We have a Transition Day

at MSHS next Thursday 17 October and notes have been

handed out with Graduation Ceremony reminders. Students

are excited at the prospect of this being their last Term in

primary school, however, there is still lots of work to be

done for end of Semester reporting! This Term our focus in

English is writing a letter to a student of the future and lecturette topic is “Me

in ten years time”. HASS studies will involve an inquiry into the Great Barrier

Reef and the impacts of tourism and Media Arts involves creating a documentary

about our primary years. A big thank you to the Year 6 students who helped with

the free dress day on the second last day of Term – we raised $240 for RSPCA.

Mrs Tracy Flavel

The countdown is on to the end of the year, which for our Year 6’s means the end of primary school. A lot of what we are doing in class this term is about preparing them for such a big change. In English we are read the Dr Seuss book ‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go’ which is about preparing for life’s ups and downs. It is all about showing us that change may be scary but it will always work out and get easier. We will be analysing the poetic devices used as well as creating an in depth analysis of the poem’s message. Another exciting thing happening this term will be our swimming lessons which begin Monday of Week 4. Keep an eye out for information on what to bring and any special information. Mr Harry Sinclair

It has been a short week but we have managed to settle back into routine. The students are extremely excited for this Term, with all the leadership roles and responsibilities quickly approaching. Within HASS this Term, students are learning about Australia’s Democracy. We have been researching and developing an understanding of how a democracy works. In English, students are learning about Ethical Dilemmas. Our focus text this term is Dr Seuss’ famous book, ‘The Sneetches’. We are critically analysing the text to identify the dilemma and possible solutions that the Sneetches could have chosen. Applying their knowledge students will be discussing possible dilemmas for their assessment. Within The Arts, students will be devising either a drama or a dance movement that incorporates and uses symmetry as a stimulus to communicate a theme.Miss Madison Mobbs

During this term, students in 4/5B are starting a new English unit where they need to re-create a traditional story for a younger audience. Students will be creating this story based on the narrative we have been reading in class. We will spend a lot of time on looking at morals and what our own personal morals are. Students have spent the first week identifying the moral of the story, retelling the story and analysing the story’s images. This story has a mathematical twist to it, that I know some of our students find very engaging! Pictured below is our story ‘One Grain of Rice’.

Students have also been provided with this term’s lecturette where students need to retell a traditional story, one has been provided in the information pack for them to use as an option, they may select their own. The lecturette outline is due by the end of Week 4!

Wow!!! Term 4 is upon us already and with the warm weather comes our class swimming block for PE commencing at the start of Week 3.The class timetable is as follows:Monday Years 4/5, 5/6, 2 and 2/3 Tuesday Years 6, 5, 1 and Prep/1 Thursday Years 3, 4 and Prep

Notes are coming home for completion and return, and these will contain information on times and what equipment children are required to bring to facilitate their participation in the swimming program.Water safety and swimming is an essential part of the Queensland school curriculum and aims to provide a program which delivers a positive experience for students appropriately tailored to age, ability and maturity. I look forward to working with the team at the Murgon Swimming Pool to provide students with a swimming block which supports both water safety and learn to swim. Growing up in rural Queensland I was lucky enough to have access to a local swimming pool and coaching during my formative years as well access to school swimming sessions. These supports have allowed me to enjoy water activities safely and responsibly and, as the summer months roll around, I will enjoy supporting all to enjoy their personal experience safely. Education begins the moment we see children as innately wise and capable beings. Only then can we play along in their world.

See you at the pool!Until next time,Mr Dean Searles

This term students will be focussed on the study of Biological Sciences, including investigations into life cycles, habitats and the relationships between plants and animals, and their environments. In the lower grades, Prep students will be investigating different types of living things and how we care for them. Students in Year 1 and 2 will be investigating different habitats and the life cycles of the plants and animals that live in them.

In the upper grades, Year 3 students will focus on how scientists use the features of living things to group them and how grouped animals and plants are the same as well as ways they are different. Students in Year 4 will be focussed on endangered plants and animals and how the relationships between them and their environment are useful when trying to protecting them. Year 5 students are investigating the adaptions of plants and animals and how they enable different species to survive in different environments while students in Year 6 will gain an

understanding of how the relationships between living and non-living things can be used in our everyday lives.

Lunchtime activities on Wednesdays will be centred on Biological Sciences being investigated in the classroom as well as the ongoing makerspace projects being conducted independently by students.

Earlyact How exciting …. the last school term is finally upon us! Trust that all our Earlyact students have enjoyed a restful break, and are ready for an action-packed Term 4.

Our last day of Term 3 was celebrated with another positive World Youth Activities Day (WYAD). The day saw an awesome range of activities on offer, which were facilitated by our very capable Earlyact members, and enjoyed by all of our students and teachers. Our hard working members were happy to enjoy a ‘thank you’ iceblock at the end of the activities. Once again, our members did us proud, demonstrating their capacity for leadership.

The major fundraising activity this term, is our ‘Coin Chain’, which we run in the Murgon CBD. Keep your eye out for the date, so that you can time your weekly trip to downtown Murgon to coincide with this event, and add some length to our chain!
