www.gibbonsschool.ca Here at Gibbons School we continuously work on important virtue characteristics for our children, and this year we have focused on resiliency . There is much research to support the idea of raising resilient children, teaching them the tools they need to respond to the challenges of childhood and to develop these skills into adulthood. Resiliency is much more than simply dealing with conflict, it focuses on the skills necessary to deal with many situations, in which we all encounter. These skills are: Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, Contribution and Coping. This month we focused on, “Coping”. Learning to cope effectively with stress will help your child be better prepared to overcome life’s challenges. Positive coping lessons include: Modeling positive coping strategies on a consistent basis, guiding your child to develop positive and effective coping strategies, realizing that telling him or her to stop the negative behaviour will not be an effective strategy on its own and understanding that many risky behaviours may be attempts to alleviate stress and pain in kids’ daily lives. Eva Scrimshaw, Youth, Recreation & Events Coordinator with the Town of Gibbons, gave our school a challenge last month. The challenge was for students to share a time when they were able to “brush off” or “cope” with a negative situation. I was very happy to see a number of excellent examples our students shared with some very empowering stories. Our Edmonton Eskimo and Eva Olssen presentations certainly reinforced these concepts. To remember to treat everyone with kindness and dignity is important for our Gibbons School family, and I am happy to see this from our students each and every day! Here at Gibbons School we continuously work on important virtue characteristics for our children, and this year we have focused on resiliency.

Lunch Time

A closed campus exists to assist the school in ensuring a safe and

caring environment. Students are not allowed off school premises

unless a parent contacts the school via phone/note to have the student

attend an appointment or be involved in a specific activity. Should you

have any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please contact

Mrs. Kristine Wilkinson, Principal, or Mr. Iain Jamieson, Vice Principal.

Severe Nut Allergies

We have students who have severe allergic reactions to nuts. If

exposed to nuts, their reaction may place them in a life-threatening

situation. In providing as safe an environment as possible, we

encourage our students to not share their food with others. If students

are bringing treats for others, we ask that they be free of nut products.

Your assistance in limiting these products being brought into the school

is appreciated. We would also ask parents/guardians to inform the

school if their child(ren) have any life threatening allergies so that we

may better protect your children’s health. Please contact the school

office at (780) 923-2240.

Absentee Check

If your child will be absent for the day please contact the school as

soon as possible at 780-923-2240. Absentee checks will be done each

morning, and automated calls will be made to verify attendance for

those students marked absent.

After a great season of growth and competition, the Grizzlies Basketballs teams all ended

on a successful note. Our Junior program came a long way and learned a lot. They

performed extremely well during the junior finals; our boys even captured second.

As for our Senior programs, they too were a giant success. Our boys team had a perfect

season in league play and captured second in finals. As for our girls, they played hard all

year and it paid off - they won Gibbons' first girls championship in over 15 years!

Congrats teams, you were amazing and should be very proud of yourselves!

Music Minutes - April 2016

Going For Gold – St. Albert Rotary Music Festival

On April 11th 2016, the Beginner and Advanced band students will be going to the St. Albert Rotary Music Festival. The students will

be performing in the Arden Theater located in St. Albert. This is an important activity and worthwhile activity because it provides per-

formance opportunities in a supportive learning environment with feedback from expert adjudicators. It also gives students an oppor-

tunity to experience other band performances.

Students are required to wear black pants, a black collared shirt, and their Gibbons Band green tie.

The time of the beginning band performance is 11:10 am and the time of advanced band performance is 1:10 pm. We will depart from

Gibbons School at 10:30 pm. We will depart from St. Albert at 2:00 pm and arrive back in Gibbons at 2:30 pm.

Please also encourage your child to practice at home and ask to hear the music we have been rehearsing in class, especially over

spring break. The performances are open to any who would like to attend, no ticket needed!

Band Trip – Gull Lake – April 14-16th

Information about the trip will be sent home in the upcoming weeks. The trip is open to advanced band students and beginner band

students (who have to audition). Auditions will take place just after spring break for beginner band students.

Cost will be $200 dollars a student. ONE FEMALE CHAPERONE IS NEEDED, so if you are able to help, please let me know as

soon as possible!

Junior High Honor Band Rehearsals For the Sturgeon Night of Music, there has always been a junior high honor band. It is comprised of junior high band students, some

senior high band students and music teachers rehearsing 2 songs at the Sturgeon Composite High School.

Rehearsals are:

Tuesday, April 12: 3:30 to 5:00 pm

Monday, April 18: 3:30 to 5:00 pm

Tuesday, April 19: 3:30 to 5:00 pm

It is required that students attend all three rehearsal and parents are responsible for transportation.

Fundraising – Mom’s Pantry

Monies raised will go into individual student accounts and can be used for the upcoming Gull Lake band trip, scheduled for April 14th-

16th. (If students are not going on the band trip, they can use the funds for next year’s band camp or trip)

Sturgeon Night of Music

By now you would have heard that Gibbons’ School students are scheduled to perform at the Sturgeon Night of Music Monday April 25,

2016 at the Winspear Centre in Edmonton. The address for the Winspear Centre is 4 Sir Winston Churchill Square Northwest, Edmon-

ton, AB T5J 4X8. The building is across from Churchill Square. Doors will open at 6:00pm to the public. The main concert will begin at

7:00pm. Choir and band members should arrive in concert dress, black bottoms and a white top or an all black outfit.

Sturgeon Night of Music is an exciting opportunity for our choir to perform for other musically inclined students throughout the division,

as well as to observe the other musical opportunities at other grade levels and schools. Only those with tickets will be permitted to en-

ter the Winspear. Ticket requests were due March 16. As ticket requests were much more positive than expected, ticket amounts will

be distributed fairly with each request in mind. The date of ticket distribution is yet to be determined (some time after spring break).

Gibbons students will be performing with the following groups:

grade 5 - mass choir

grade 6/Beginner band - mass beginner band

advanced band – mass advanced

Grade 5 students will have a rehearsal with the choir on April 21st. More specific details regarding the rehearsal will be sent home.
