Celebrating Student Success on the Track! Congratulations to Annabel (Year 3) and her friend Adelaide (Year 4) attended the State Athletics Championships on the weekend. The weather was rainy and cold but all the athletes went out and did their best. The girls did an amazing job and put in a great effort. Well done Annabel and Adelaide, what a great achievement! School Rules/PBL Focus Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an evidence-based whole school process to improve learning outcomes for all students. Here at Wattle Grove we have been successfully using PBL to enhance our student learning through the use of modelling Positive Behaviour within each area of the school. We encourage students to be SAFE, RESPECTFUL LEARNERS and work with them on developing how this looks within the school environment. Congratulations to the students on a positive start to the year. Building Positive School relationships - Learning Conversations This week you would have received information regarding the Learning Conversations that will be held during the week starting 1 April. Please log onto to the site provided to book a time that is convenient for you. You will receive a questionnaire to complete with your child before the Learning Conversations. This will form the basis of the conversation with the teacher, yourself and your child. These conversations provide a valuable opportunity to discuss your child’s learning with the class teacher, which will support them throughout the year! The children also see the positive relationships between yourself and the teachers which impacts positively on their school life. Dancing Fun! What a great night was had by all at Wattle Grove’s first disco for 2019! The children had a great time dancing to the latest tunes, snacking on a range of delicious food available and purchasing some novelty toys. Thank you to all our family and friends who attended the night with their children. It was a great family atmosphere. A huge thank you to the P&C, led by Mrs Kristen McCanna, for their organisation of this event. All aspects of this event were organised and led by P&C members, and we are very grateful to have such an amazing P&C who works hard to provide these opportunities for our children. Thank you also to our family and friends who helped out on the night.

BULLYING. NO WAY! The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, is held on the third Friday of March each year. This is an opportunity for Australian schools to highlight their everyday work to counter bullying and violence. Last week, the students were involved in a variety of lessons looking at this important issue. They explored texts around these themes, and also had rich discussions, where students were able to express opinions and respond to others. The staff at Wattle Grove Public School, will continue to keep student safety and wellbeing at the forefront with the continuation of many projects, lessons and initiatives throughout the year. It is vital that students are aware that bullying is never ok. It’s hurtful and can impact someone for a long time. It is important that they know they are not alone and there are people they can talk to and things you can do to stop the bullying. It is also important students know what bullying is. It's more than just a fight or disliking someone. · It’s being mean to someone over and over again · Bullying is when someone or a group of people who have more power than you repeatedly use words or actions to hurt you Bullying can happen anywhere – at home, with friends, online, at school or on the bus. If you have any concerns over the year, please see your child’s teacher, myself or Mrs Foreshew.

Harmony Day Yesterday, Wattle Grove Public School celebrated Harmony Day. The theme of Harmony Day is 'Everyone Belongs.' Students spent the day engaging in a variety of activities about multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion. One of the favourite texts that the students enjoyed was a book titled, "I am Australian Too.” By Mem Fox. All students received an orange ribbon which symbolised our commitment to Multiculturalism. Some of the students comments about Harmony Day. It's about being nice to all. To be kind and respectful. To get along with everybody. To share. People are all same. It is about friendship. It does not matter where you come from we are all the same It is a day to celebrate peace and harmony.

Keeping active - National Ride 2School Day Today was National Ride2School Day. This day encourages children and adults to try walking, riding or scootering to school and celebrating the regular walkers and riders. We have many students who ride and scooter to school which is fabulous! This also provides the opportunity for students to learn and implement safe riding practices. It is essential that our children learn how to keep themselves and others safe when they are riding on the footpaths! There are many spots for students to safely secure their bikes and scooters at school. The students need to walk their bikes and scooters through the school to ensure the safety of themselves and others.

Keeping our students safe – Responsible Pet Owner Session Over the past two weeks, K-2 students attended a pet safety session. These sessions provided the students with information in relation to looking after pets and safe practices when around animals to keep both themselves and animals safe and happy! The students loved the session and the beautiful dogs who visited! Thank you to Ms Stevens for organising this event.

Your help is needed - Lost Property Our lost property is growing and growing! Many of the items would be expensive to replace and we aim to return them all to their rightful owners. To assist us with this, can you please label your child’s belongings with their full name and class. The lost property is in a tub just outside the office door and on some days will be displayed along the front brick ledge. If your child is missing something, please encourage them to have a look in these places. You are also welcome to have a look. Kiss and Ride Zone Kiss and Ride Zones are designed for your convenience and for your child’s safety. Designed for quick entry and exit, these zones minimise congestion and risk when used properly by all parents and carers. These zones operate under the same conditions as no parking zones, which means you may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes. You're required to remain in, or within 3 metres of,

your vehicle. Days and hours of operation may apply to some zones. Please be aware other children should not be left unattended in the car whilst you are dropping off school students.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is Back! This challenge aims to encourage in students a love of reading for leisure and pleasure, and to enable students to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. This year our school’s aim is to encourage every child in years K-6 to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. This could form a valuable part of your child’s home reading program. Students must complete a set amount of reading to complete the reading challenge. The challenge starts this year on Monday 4 March 2019 and must be completed by the Friday 30 August 2019. There is a new website and book list! Please log and find out more about this exciting challenge! Details of the Premiers Reading Challenge are available on the following website along with comprehensive book titles. https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html This challenge is a great way to build children’s reading volume. Regular reading not only impacts on their skill development but also their creativity, imagination, language skills and enjoyment of reading. Congratulations to Mikaylah (6Pink) who has completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge. What a great effort! Well done Mikaylah.

Education Assistance Scheme DCO provides a range of services and resources for Defence children, to assist with the transition between schools and education systems when a member is posted within Australia, and to provide support for the unique needs of Defence students. Defence may reimburse fees for educational services external to the school. Students may be entitled to up to 14 weeks of tutoring in any subject that has been recommended by the

school principal or the child’s teacher. This applies to primary and secondary students, within the first 18 months of commencing at the new school. Deployments and Absence Please make sure you let your child/ren’s classroom teacher or I know if a member of your family is away for an extended period of time. Having this knowledge will go towards supporting the student/s at school throughout the absence period.
