Term 2, Week 1

29th April 2020

Newsletter

Principal’s News

Welcome to Term 2, particularly to those students who had been self-isolating and we haven’t seen for a while. It is good to

have you back. This term has started a little differently than we had anticipated and planned for. Our staff spent a great deal

of time preparing for remote online learning, developing their knowledge and understanding of the Google Platform and

working with parents and students to successfully learn at home. That has all changed with over 90% of our students back

at school. We will still provide work for students at home; however, there will be less of an online component. Teachers will

still be using elements of the Google Suite to conduct lessons to ensure that they continue to develop their skills and those

of the students, should the need arise again.

I would like thank you all, as parents, for the positive way you communicated with, and supported our staff, school and your

children to work through these unprecedented times. It is in times like this that I am grateful to work in the community that I

do.

Welcome

We would like to welcome 3 students this term- Kruze (Year 6) and Bejay (Year 8) Kennedy, who have come to us from

Elliston and Lilliana Crettenden who is returning to us from Adelaide. Welcome also to Ms Duan Maguire, who has taken on

Art/English and Primary NIT, and Mr Bob Combes who is teaching Research Project. We are glad that you are all joining us

and hope you will enjoy being part of our school community

Anzac Day

Anzac Day ceremonies looked a little different this year with rules about social distancing and large gatherings, forcing us

all to conduct our own private services in memory of those Australians and New Zealanders who served in conflicts around

the world. Many in our community took part in the Light up the Dawn initiative, which created a great sense of personal

connection and reflection. Our Year 9 History students, along with Mrs Peters, recorded a service prior to the end of the

term which can be viewed on our Facebook page.

Rural Youth Ambassadors

We would like to congratulate Lachlan Turner and Jordan Lewis who have been selected to be part of the Rural Youth

Ambassadors Programme for 2020. They will join young people from across rural South Australia in a range of forums and

discussions exploring key areas of interest relating to rural life and education. They will also be provided with a range of

opportunities to further develop their leadership skills with other young rural people. Lachlan and Jordan attended an initial

online Orientation day and, dependent on the state of COVID-19 over the coming months, will take part in 3 more forums,

workshops and conferences across the year. They will have the opportunity to meet Government Ministers, senior

education sector leaders and key stakeholders, who they will present their ideas to.

We wish Lachlan and Jordan all the best as Rural Youth Ambassadors and are confident they will do themselves, their

families and our school community proud.

Facilities

We have recently been informed that, after much advocating for improved toilet facilities over many years, our Primary toilet

block will be undergoing a $50,000 upgrade. This will see the following occur:

Remove asbestos ceiling and eave linings.

Remove existing toilets, partitions, hand basins, urinal trough and sanitary hardware i.e. hand dryers.

Demolish existing concrete coving from perimeter of rooms and concrete floor as required to amend plumbing layout (it is thought that the trough would be replaced with another toilet pan).

Reinstate ceilings and eaves with new product.

Tile floors and walls throughout.

Install new toilets, partitions etc.

Thank you to the Governing Council for their continued

support in pursuing this matter.

Thank you

The school and Governing Council would like to give a big

shout out to Horrie Hornhardt for the time and effort he

puts in to support the school, by regularly helping out with

the Saturday Night draw. The Saturday Night draw (pre

COVID-19) is the Governing Council’s major fundraiser

and Horrie was consistently there to lend a helping hand

and word of advice. We look forward to catching up with

Horrie again, when things return to normal.

A big thank you to Nic Turner and his crew who have been

working throughout the holiday break to grade our oysters

and do some work on our lease. This has been a

tremendous help, whilst we don’t have a Farm Lease

Manager and we appreciate their support.
