Term 3, Issue 11 10th August 2017

Our new Fish Tank Our new fish tank continues to generate lots of excitement throughout the school as the children love to watch the fish swim throughout the tank! If you are yet to see it, may I take this opportunity to invite you to do so. I’m sure Goldy, Speedy, Thunder, Lightning, Rocky, Loggy and Blacky would love to meet you too!

Year 1 and 2 “Late Night at School” The level of excitement last Thursday was a great deal more than usual as the Year 1 and 2 children prepared and participated in their annual “Late Night at School”. The aim of this program is for the children to develop their independence skills whilst being away from their parents for a little while and they certainly did so in abundance. They enjoyed time playing a variety of games, ate yummy pizza, changed into their pyjamas and then watched a movie – all by themselves! A sincere thank you to the numerous staff who remained to assist and to the amazing Year 1 and 2 teachers for all of their efforts to ensure the night was an enormous success! Below are some photos of the children enjoying their Late Night at School!

At Monday’s assembly Aarushi, Aditi, Elena, Meheka, Akshara and Aryaa (all in Year 2) presented the following speech about the importance of the Indian custom of Raksha Bandhan. Good morning parents, teachers, students and Mr Catalano, Today is Raksha Bandhan. It is a well know Indian festival. It is called the festival of Rakhi. This reflects love and care between brothers and sisters. Raksha means protection and Bandhan means bond. Raksha Bandhan means the bond of protection. The Rakhi is a special thread decorated with gems and silk which sisters tie on brothers wrists. In return brothers give sweets and gifts to their sister and promise to always protect them.

Thank you for listening. Well done to Aarushi, Aditi, Elena, Meheka, Akshara and Aryaa you should be very proud of yourselves as the manner in which you presented at assembly was simply amazing!

10th August 2017 Term 3, Issue 11

Curriculum Day Last Wednesday was another amazing Curriculum Day as we, the staff, learnt so much more about the brain and the things we can do to further enhance learning in our school. For instance:

Bottom up v’s Top Down learning – - Bottom-up learning indicates a progression from the individual elements to the whole. - Top-down processing (learning) refers to how our brains make use of information that has already been

brought into the brain by one or more of the sensory systems. Top-down processing is a cognitive process that initiates with our thoughts, which flow down to lower-level functions, such as the senses.

Learning styles – research indicates that they are NOT predetermined! They are developed through our experiences and should be refereed to learning preferences

Memory involves – Encoding, Storing and Accessing information

Mental models and schema – these refer to how we “see the world”. Essentially, we code the world to experiences and to the manner we think it should be. So much of what we see, believe etc is determined by our mental models and schema. We also take so much granted, for instance, is the sky really blue??

Learning is not like a calculator – it is not linear

Basic learning process – Start with facts, move to concepts and then the transfer of knowledge

The 3 stages of thinking – “Activate Prior Knowledge”, “Elaboration and Connection” and “Content and Personification”

As we move forward with our learning and work in this area, you will notice the children use the following terminology:

The Learning Pit – is a metaphor which describes how a person may plunge into a pit when they are learning and the importance of having learner resilience in order to grasp the concept and then move out of the pit

Error Alarm – refers to that feeling and reaction when we make a mistake or come across something that we have never experienced before.

Surface, Deep and Transfer of learning – these are the 3 stages of learning

Productive Struggle – refers to the “struggle” a person must go through when learning something new or transferring the learning. Naturally this is a very important part of the process

The PEN Principles – neuroscientist Jared Cooney – Horvath has developed 12 principles which are based on Psychology, Education and Neuro-science (PEN). As a staff we will be using these extensively.

Feel free to research the above concepts and ask your child about them. I also look forward to asking families about these concepts as we cross paths.

Parent Opinion Survey It is that time of year again where schools are required to randomly select families in order to complete the annual Parent Opinion Survey. The selection is completed by our computer system CASES21 and the survey results are a vital tool for us, as your school, and for the Department to gain an indication of how well Glen Waverley Primary School is meeting the needs of our students and the school community. For the first time, the process is now being completed on-line which involves selected families receiving an email that contains a letter from me and instructions as to how to complete the survey. May I encourage everyone to check their email addresses and if you have been selected, please complete the survey by Sunday 27th August. Thank you in advance for doing so and we look forward to receiving the results.

Year 4 Camp What an exciting and amazing 3 days the Year 4 children had at camp Cavehill Creek recently. They enjoyed completing canoeing, archery, map reading, low ropes, bush cooking, bush art, boulder wall climbing and a phot trail. Congratulations to all of the children as their resilience, persistence and endeavour to complete all of the tasks was simply amazing! Also a sincere thank you to all of the staff who attended as your efforts and willingness to do so are appreciated enormously!

2018 Enrolments I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2018 that we are taking enrolments now and that they are also closing rapidly as we only have a very small number of positions available. I strongly encourage you to ensure you return your child’s enrolment form to Jenny, Kylie or Julie in the main office as soon as possible. We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of their neighbours of the enrolment procedures and direct them to the office to collect an enrolment form or our school website – www.glenps.vic.edu.au . As part of the Year One Inquiry of ‘Farm to Table,’ on Wednesday August 9th the students went on a very exciting excursion to Chesterfield Farm. They were given the fantastic opportunity to participate in some great learning activities including:

Feeding the sheep, deer, camels, horses, emus, ostriches, kangaroos, donkeys and goats.

Enjoying a tractor ride where they were able to see how large the farm was and the various

animals that were a part of it.

Milking ‘Bonnie’ the cow.

Watching ‘Bridget’ the sheepdog round up the sheep.

Watching the farmer shear a sheep.

Patting the animals in the animal nursery.

A great day was had by all! Here are some photos and comments made by the students in 1A:

I learnt that Camels use their hard

jaws to help them eat. Ravindu

I learnt that there are two kinds of

cows – beef cows and dairy cows.

Mannroop

I really liked it when we fed the animals. It felt ticklish. The camels were scary. Yenuli I learnt that not all dogs can chase sheep. They need to be specially trained. Arnav K

I learnt how to feed all the animals.

Dillon

I learnt that camels

make milk. Nishi

The “Kids’ Corner” section of our school newsletter provides the opportunity

for the children to showcase their talents or communicate something special

The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter has been written by:

Sandil (Year 3) – A Poem

Our picnic was ruined by too many ants

At least I am thankful I am not in France

When I play cricket

I like to bowl to the wicket

I saw the ball travel really far

I saw it pass my car!

Keen (Year 3) – A Poem

I try to kick a goal

It hits the pole

I score!

Now my leg is sore!

I think I kicked the ball way too

hard

It feels like I kicked an ice shard.

I feel I’m going to fall

Very soon I’m going to have to crawl!

I can’t play soccer any more

My leg is way too sore

I’ll have to find another sport

I might try another sport

I might try out on the basketball

court!

Hishan (Year 1) –

My Games on the iPad I went to the Apple Store.

I got Star Wars and I tricked my

mum.

Then I was so happy because I got

to the 6th level.
