PRINCIPAL’S COMMENT Kia ora koutou katoa

The day three members of the All Blacks visited the school will

undoubtedly be a highlight for many in our school community. Conrad Smith, Victor Vito and Sam Cane generously gave their

time to attend a school assembly and present the 1st XI Football

team with a complete „kit‟ donated by Adidas in response to the team winning the national Adidas School Scholarship. There was

a high level of interest by the media and the event featured briefly on TV One and TV Three. Congratulations to the 1st XI

and to Mr Andrew and Mrs Lisa Chubb who coach and manage the team and many thanks to the sponsors and supporters of the event.

Since the last newsletter there has been a number of school events that have been supported by our wider school community. The Hostel Variety Show, the „Mix „n‟ Match

exhibition of student art, the Chamber of Commerce trade fair that featured our Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) teams, the Big Sing, Chamber music and literary competitions

and the weekend at Muru Raupatu Marae are some of the events that have involved a

large number of students and staff who have generously committed their personal time.

Congratulations to our team of Economists: Lauren Walker, Victoria Holyoake, Olivia Forman and Bridget Coleman and their teacher Mrs Karen Morine who were runner-up in

the national Treasury School Challenge. Treasury will fly the team to Wellington where

the Minister of Finance will present the students each with a $1,000 scholarship to attend Victoria University and a $800 Dick Smith voucher.

By now you should have received your daughter‟s report if she is in the senior school.

Due to technical difficulties we extended the date of issue of junior reports to Thursday 4 July and parent-teacher interviews to Wednesday 10 July. We apologise for any

inconvenience this has caused. The interviews are for senior and juniors and run from

2.00 pm - 4.45 pm and then from 5.30 pm - 7.00 pm in the New Plymouth Girls‟ High School Hall. School classes will finish after spell 4 (1.10 pm) to accommodate the

interviews. To book interviews, go online to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and use Event Code QHMK5. If you do not have internet access at home, your daughter can make a

booking for you at the school library. Students were issued notices regarding booking

access on Tuesday 2 July and it has been possible to book since then. Your daughter should attend the interview with you and bring her Term 2 Reflection sheets with her.

School will finish for the term at approximately 1.40 pm Friday 12 July and Term 3 will

begin on Monday 29 July. We wish all our staff and students a safe and enjoyable break.

STUDENT NEWS & INFORMATION Taranaki Secondary Schools Literary Challenge Quiz

This annual quiz is organised by Pam Jones from the South Taranaki District Council Library service and forms part of the NZ Post Book Awards for Young Adults. Most Taranaki schools were represented at the quiz, with two teams from some schools taking part, including us. The students were required to read the nine finalist books from the young adult fiction and non-fiction sections, and then face a series of questions. Both our teams made it through the preliminary rounds to the finals, along with a Sacred Heart team. Eventually our junior team (year 10) romped home first, with the year 11 team following close behind. The students won the trophy, a set of the finalist books for the school library, personal vouchers from Paper Plus, as well as most of the spot prizes on offer. As well, Alexis Allen won the top prize of an all-expenses paid return trip for two to Christchurch, covering air fares, accommodation and transport and meals. She will also have the thrill of meeting the various finalist authors and publically announcing the winner of the Award on the national media.

Off to Christchurch! Alexis Allen of Team “Under the Influence – Again!” receives her travel prize from Mr Ken Horner of the Lysaght-Watt Trust, competition sponsor.

Winners are grinners! Team “I can‟t believe I‟m saying this” (Llio Vernon, Melissa Marriott, Samantha Nicholas, Molly Evans and Lucy Byers) receive the Taranaki Literary Challenge Trophy from Mr Ross Williams of Hawera Paper Plus, competition sponsor.

Paddy Miller, Hostel Head Girl, achieved 2nd placing at the Lions Young Speechmaker competition regional round (Taranaki-Manawatu). She was required to present a 3-minute speech on a topic of her choosing, plus an impromptu one-minute speech, given one-minute's preparation time. The topic for that was persuasive - "why you should go to my school." This now entitles her to go forward to the nationals in Auckland in August, with a chance of winning the first prize of a 4-6 week holiday in the USA and Canada.

Take Note! Police are issuing $60 traffic infringement notices to vehicle owners who are failing to comply with the road rules in the vicinity of the school.

Traffic Congestion Outside the School To keep our girls safe, drivers need to be aware of the congestion at the exits to the school. Parents and caregivers are not permitted to drive into the school to drop off students immediately before school or pick up immediately after school, unless approval has been given due to disability issues, etc. You can assist by

if possible, dropping off / picking up your daughter somewhere other than immediately outside the school.

Spirit of Adventure Participants 2013 Each year between 1000 and 1200 young people aged 15-18 years from all around New Zealand have the opportunity to participate in the Spirit of Adventure‟s 10 Day Youth Development Programme. During the voyage the 40 trainees work in groups to sail the ship as well as participate in various team building and leadership activities. Trainees have the chance to build confidence and make new friends, and at the same time have lots of fun. On the last day of the voyage, the trainees are able to elect their own crew to manage the ship and must navigate themselves to a certain point by a certain time. Along with this they must cook their own meals and can plan any activities they wish to do. Every year New Plymouth Girls‟ High School is offered two berth vacancies for Year 12 students. Ashleigh Weir and Amelia Riddick were selected for the two berths in 2013.

“I went on voyage 638, sailing from New Plymouth to the Bay of Islands in the beginning of March this year. Although the weather was unpredictable we still had plenty of opportunities to do some decent sailing. During the fine weather we did a hike to the top of Dukes Nose, climbed to the top of the 100ft mast, and rowed to various beautiful places on inflatable row boats. I would recommend this adventure to anyone who wants to discover things about themselves as well as learn about leadership and responsibility.” Ashleigh Weir “The 10 Day Youth Voyage was such an amazing trip! There were 40 trainees and 12 crew and at first we were all strangers but by the time we got back to Auckland, we were all really good friends. We travelled from Auckland around the Hauraki Gulf. We anchored at Waiheke Island, around the Coromandel, Great Barrier Island for a few days, then Kawau Island, returning to the Auckland Harbour for the last night. On the boat we did a lot of team building activities and in the watches we were assigned, we all had the opportunity to take on leadership roles. Each day we had a 6.30am swim and then did lots of different activities. Some of the things we did included learning how to sail, and we went on a 6 hour tramp up Mount Hobson on Great Barrier Island. We had a campfire and BBQ dinner one night, got to climb to the top of the mast, saw dolphins and whales, went on a rope swing into the water, had night watch some nights, did a beach clean-up and then on the last day we got to sail the boats back to Auckland by ourselves. Overall, it was an amazing experience that I enjoyed very much.” Amelia Riddick

For any students interested in the opportunity of participating on a 10 Day Youth Development Voyage aboard the Spirit of Adventure, public applications can be found on www.spiritofadventure.org.nz or see Miss Leah Salisbury in R6.

Treasury Schools Challenge Schools from around New Zealand entered, submitting a 2000 word essay regarding their ideas for sustainable economic growth. Our team began working on this during the last holidays after two Treasury Analysts came to New Plymouth to run a training session with us and Stratford High. Team members Bridget Coleman, Victoria Holyoake, Lauren Walker (all Year 13) and Olivia Forman (Year 12) met in their weekends and after school and all work was completed out of class time. Ten finalists were chosen to travel to Wellington last week and present their ideas to a panel of four judges - Treasury Analysts and a Victoria University professor. We placed second-equal with Christchurch Girls‟ High School in the 2013 Challenge. Last year‟s winners (James Hargest) took it out again but we were hard on their heels. Treasury will fly the team to Wellington again to present their ideas for economic growth to the Minister of Finance. The girls each get a $1000 scholarship to Victoria University and a $800 Dick Smith voucher.

Joes Garage’s 1st XI Football Adidas Scholarship A collaborative effort spearheaded by Katelyn Roberts resulted in us winning the National Adidas Scholarship for 2013 for Football. This effort brought us three All Blacks: Conrad Smith, Victor Vito and Sam Cane, who spent two hours at the school. During their visit they attended a full school assembly to celebrate the achievement, followed by spending some time with the 1st XI Squad in the Year 13 common room. Each girl was presented with her playing shirt by Conrad Smith, who spoke to each player about the position they played and their role in the team. He was particularly interested in who was striker and how many goals they had scored this season. When Ella James came to collect her shirt (Number 13) Conrad was very excited and asked for a photo with her showing the number on the shirt! Once the girls had received their shirt, they moved along receiving shorts, drink bottles, full tracksuits, socks and bags. They then moved on to shoe fitting with Sam Cane and Victor Vito. Victor was particularly good at shoe fitting, informing girls that they must feel like Cinderella

getting their shoes put on for them! The team also received balls and ball bags and management were given tracksuits. It was an exciting day with media interviews from TV3, TV1 and the Daily News - all attempting to interview girls and the All Blacks. We had a full team photo with all of the football squad, four managers and the three All Blacks! Once the media left there was a fair bit of time which the girls got to spend with the All Blacks – it was decided the best thing to do was test the three lads‟ football juggling skills followed by some fun photos. Reflecting on the photos we realised how big the All Blacks are and how much we were dwarfed by them! Overall an enjoyable experience was had by all. All of this was videoed by the Adidas company for promotional purposes.

PTA NEWS Next Meeting

Tuesday 6 August 2013, 7.00 pm, Year 13 Study

Everybody welcome, supper provided

Unwanted Uniform Items

Attention Year 12 or 13 students leaving school: please consider donating your uniforms if they are no longer required. Likewise, Year 11 students changing to the senior navy skirt next year, your junior tartan skirts can be utilised. There is a need for all uniform items, including sandals and shoes. We are short of the red, white and navy school jacket. Aertex shirts and polo shirts are no longer uniform items. All donations are gratefully received for students who have difficulty purchasing uniforms.

Unwanted Books and Equipment

Any books that can be donated would be great, thank you. Revision books, homework books, course notes etc, are invaluable for girls who cannot afford to buy them. Even if they are partly filled in, they are better than nothing! Exercise books that are not used up are also needed, along with calculators, art equipment and graphics gear. At the moment there is a great need for Level 1 SciPad workbooks (even if they are filled in). All donations are very much appreciated. Please hand all donated items in to the school office. Mrs Barbara Bennett oversees the distribution of donated items.

Please join us for the next Service of Light & Learning - 5pm at Taranaki Cathedral on

Sunday 7 July.

This month‟s topic is the annihilation of the world‟s shark populations - 70 million are thought to be killed per year. Most of this is due to the growing demand from international markets for shark fins. New Zealand with its “clean & green reputation” sits in the top fifteen of leading exporters of shark fin.

New Zealand‟s legislation on shark finning is up for review this year. It will be another four years before we have this chance again. Shark finning is not something most New Zealanders can abide – every person, every voice, every submission will count in our race to save one of the most misunderstood of creatures. Hear Paul Geraets of Shark Fin Free, Auckland, and Katy Allen of

Devon Intermediate speak on the topic.

Taranaki Cathedral‟s Services of Light and Learning are bimonthly public forums on the first Sunday of the Month. A short service is followed by a discussion and a bring-and-share meal. Contact Dean Jamie on 06 7583111 to find out more.
