Principal’s Message

They say that time flies when you are having fun. If that is the case, then we must be having a lot of fun as the first 2 months of the school

year have simply flown by. We are just a few days shy of the end of the 1st term. Marks for report cards are due to the office on November 3rd at 9:00am. Report cards will be available for pick-up during Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews on November 7th and 8th from 4:30pm until 7:00pm. Please take the time to stop by and discuss your student’s progress thus far.

On October 11th the SRC held a Pre-K through Grade 12 assembly. The SRC took the opportunity to introduce the students who are or have taken part in the fall sports this year. Four students were recognized as Warrior of the Month for September; Paisley Gaudet (Early Elementary), Zennon Smith (Junior Elementary), Garver Kuhn (Middle Years), and Bradley Hilkewich (High School) all received the nod. The assembly also marked the official unveiling of the new gym floor. Mann Motors was on hand to present a cheque to the Wakaw School SCC in the amount of $3620.00.

On the sports front, both the Jr. Girls Volleyball team and the Sr. Girls Volleyball team have continued their winning ways. The Sr. Football team completed a perfect regular season with a win over Shellbrook to claim first place. The boys will have played their inter-conference play-off game against the #4 Big River team by the time this newsletter airs. Barring a huge upset, they should have advanced to the provincial play-off bracket. The Jr. Football program also wrapped up their season finishing in first place with a 5-1 record. The final date on their calendar was exhibition match up with the #2 ranked Kamsack team and featured a 9/10 game followed by a 7-9 game on October 16th.

Academically, Fountas and Pinnell testing and OCA testing is now complete. Wakaw School will have also completed their “Review of School Effectiveness” by the time this article airs. Initially, the date was set for the 25th but had to be changed to October 26th due to scheduling conflicts at the division level. Details of the “ROSE” review will be made available to the public and interested stakeholders at a later date.

Time has certainly flown by these past two months! Thanks again to the staff and students who make Wakaw School a great place to be. We have an awesome school and a school with a tremendous growth mind-set. Wakaw School simply gets better each and every day!

Grade 4B News

The Grade 4B’s have had a busy month. For part of our Social Studies unit about Saskatchewan Agriculture and Resources, we took a trip to the Western Development Museum for the Harvest Demonstration. While here we were able to see and learn how much farming has changed from hand held tools to steam engine equipment leading us to today’s modern harvest machines. Students have been busy learning about narrative writing and have been practicing different narrative stories of their own. To help make our writing interesting for our reader, we have been learning about “triple scoop words” and similes. Students completed the Fountas and Pinnell assessment and this has allowed us to start Guided Reading groups where I am able to work on reading strategies and comprehension with the students in a small group based on their levels. We wrapped up our first unit in Math about Patterns and have moved on to Numbers where we have been learning about Place Value. The grade 4s enjoyed being able to create their first advertisement posters for their favourite book which they read over the last month. The posters are displayed in the hallway with the hopes that they will inspire other students to read their favourite book from the prior month. In Science we have been learning about Light where we have learned about how light travels, reflections, and we completed a research assignment on the Chrome Books about Thomas Edison to learn about how the lightbulb was created. Finally, this month the grade 4B's have started helping the 4A's with juice box recycling in the school. Together as a class we have set a goal to try collect enough money from juice boxes to sponsor an endangered animal through the WWF, which we will be learning more about in our future Habitats and Communities unit in Science. We look forward to sharing with everyone what our chosen endangered animal is, that we will be sponsoring as a class.

New Gym Floor

Wakaw School has changed the floor into a brand new one. There is a new Warrior logo in the centre and

basketball hoops at each end. The grand opening was celebrated on October 11, 2017.

SRC News

Thank you to everyone who supported our annual DFS Fundraiser. Orders should be arriving by the first week of

December.

The SRC will be having a school clothing sale in November. Watch your email for options that are available. This would be

a great Christmas gift idea!

On Friday, October 20th Ms. Jennison and Mrs. Oleksyn took the grade 7

and 8 classes to a documentary called Rising Above. Mrs. Duford and the

students that went to Student Leadership Conference saw it there and they

came back with great reviews. This documentary features people who were

bullies, people who were bullied and those who stood up for someone being

bullied. It was very empowering for our students to see. Thank you to Mrs.

Duford for organizing this educational trip!

Craft Club

The Craft Club is underway for another year. The students have created

beautiful fall wreaths in September! We are presently working on

carving faces on apples, to create witches, under the direction of Mrs.

Shulhan. Come and join the club, grade fives and sixes.

Kindergarten News

We had a wonderful second month in Kindergarten. The children

continue to build independence and understanding of how the

classroom works.

We visit the library each kindergarten day and I encourage families to

read with their children each night for at least 20 minutes. This

month, we welcomed two guest readers; Mayor Steve Skoworodko

and RCMP Sergeant Larry Kurtenbach, into the kindergarten

classroom to read and share their love for literacy with the students.

The kindergartens were very excited to see the new gym floor and

have their first Phys. Ed class. On that same day firefighters Terry

and Justin facilitated a fire safety presentation for the K- grade 6

students. As you can see, there is never a dull day at Wakaw School!

Safety Patrol Induction Ceremony 2017

Wakaw School held its annual Safety Patrol Induction

Ceremony on October 26, 2017. Twenty-five new

members were inducted into the Patrol, receiving pins

and membership cards from Sergeant Larry Kurtenbach.

Avery Zarysky and Noah Skoworodko hosted the

ceremony and received Captain pins. They are now our

new leaders of the patrol. We have sixteen new

lieutenants from Grade Five, who also received pins.

Our Vice-Principal, Ms. Jennison, presented the pins to

these students. The Lieutenants are in charge of

signaling the team on duty to enable students to cross

the intersection safely. Patrollers are not traffic

controllers; they are providing a service to help

pedestrians leave the school safely. Mayor Steve

Skoworodko, representing the Town of Wakaw, Mrs.

Janet Goller, representing the Wakaw Lions, and

Sergeant Kurtenbach, representing the RCMP, accepted

certificates of appreciation for their support of our

program. We are very fortunate to have the financial

support of the Town of Wakaw and the Wakaw Lions

Club. Newly purchased patrol toques were handed out

to each new member of the team. The toques, along

with the patrol vests (supplied by the CAA), help to

improve the visibility of our patrollers while they are on

duty. It was an exciting afternoon for students. Thanks

to all who attended and showed their support.

Senior Volleyball

The Sr. Girls Volleyball team continued their season this past

month with tournaments at the University of Saskatchewan,

Rose Valley, and Lanigan.

At the U of S, the girls went undefeated and finished first in

their pool. This put them on the A side where they ran into a

tough P.A. Carlton team and lost the quarter finals.

In Rose Valley the girls were able to finish third place after

losing the semi-final to Muenster.

The girls came away tournament champions in Lanigan. They

went undefeated throughout the tournament and beat a

strong Wynyard team in the final.

The month of November is when the run to provincials begins.

The girls are hoping to make the trip to Carlyle on the third

weekend in November for 3A provincials.

Warrior Football

The junior football team wrapped up their season with games in Naicam on Sept. 25th and games in Kamsack on Oct. 11th. In

Naicam, they scored wins of 27-14 over Kamsack and 26-13 over Naicam. In Kamsack, they lost to Kamsack 27-14, but won

a tight game against Naicam 22-20. That set up the championship game in Wakaw vs. Kamsack on Oct. 16th. The first half

involved grade 10 players on both teams, and the second half was limited to grade 7-9s. The Warriors held on for the

victory 48-42 and the championship!

The senior football team has been having a very successful season. On Sept. 22 they travelled to Big River for a night game

and scored a convincing 68-20 win. On Oct. 12th, they hosted Ahtahkakoop for their home night game and won 72-6. They

continued their roll with a hard fought 50-18 win in Birch Hills on Oct. 5th. That set up a battle for first place against

Shellbrook on Oct. 12th. That game was back and forth with several lead changes, but the Warriors found their offensive

groove and the defense held Shellbrook off in the last quarter to secure a 61-52 win and first place in the conference with a

5-0 record.

The Warriors then hosted Big River in the 1 vs. 4 inter-conference playoff game on Wed. Oct. 18th. It was a windy day in

Wakaw which kept the scores lower than usual, but the Warriors came away with a 43-0 victory. That put them into

provincials as the first seed in Conference 4, and host of the provincial quarter-final game. Provincial results will be included

in next month’s newsletter.

On October 4th, 2017 the Grade 11’s

and 12’s, along with Mrs. Loeffelholz,

Mr. Haryett and Mrs. Kurtenbach,

attended Opportunities Edge in

Muenster, SK. The career fair allowed

students to explore a variety of

colleges and universities and discuss

their futures with the

college/university representatives.

Terry Fox Walk/Run

The students and staff of Wakaw

School participated in the Terry Fox

Walk/Run on Tuesday, September

26th, 2017. All students began their

walk at 2:00 pm, after a short

presentation about Terry Fox and his

valiant efforts while battling cancer.

Throughout the weeks leading up to

the walk, we sold “I’m Running for

_____________” badges for $1.00

each. These badges are displayed in

the hallway by the gym doors. Other

monetary donations were also

accepted with all proceeds going to

The Terry Fox Foundation. We were

able to raise $224.10 through the

badge sales and donations. We are

extremely proud to be associated

with The Terry Fox Foundation and

believe our involvement will make a

positive contribution to cancer

research. Thank you to everyone for

taking the time to donate!

Jr. SRC

We are very excited to be bringing

back Jr SRC to Wakaw School.

Students from grades 4-6 elected

class representatives for our 2017-

2018 Jr SRC club. This year’s

members are Cameron J (4A), Emma

R (4A), Marti B (4B), Emily K (4B),

Garver K (5), Griffin L (5), Sara K (5),

Amaya M (5), Noah S (6), and

Cassandra G (6). The Jr SRC will be

helping to plan events, advertise

important events happening in the

school, presenting the Warrior of the

Month at assemblies along with extra

activities to be determined. The

grade 4 representatives did a

wonderful job presenting at the first

Warrior of the Month assembly for

the month of September. This year’s

teachers who will be supervising and

assisting the Jr SRC members are Ms.

Mellesmoen, Mrs. Dunville, Mrs.

Mourot, and Mrs. Bergerman.

Orange Shirt Day – Every Child

Matters!

On September 29th, the students at

Wakaw School participated in Orange

Shirt Day. Over 60 students and

teachers wore orange shirts. Orange

Shirt Day is a day to bring awareness

about residential schools. It is about

anti-racism and anti-bullying.
