Week 6 Term 4, 2017 PRINCIPALS MESSAGE It is absolutely wonderful to see DPS students representing our school at community events and learning opportunities beyond our school gate. Thank you to the staff and parents who provide the support network which is invaluable for our students to access these activities and shine as they always do. Last week we had students representing DPS at the Scone Literary Festival. The stage three students participated in a writer’s workshop with author Jess Black and other local primary students. Rachel, Phoebe and Rhyme had a fantastic time and were wonderful ambassadors for our school. We have enjoyed the stories they created on the day. We have now received confirmation that OOSH will be in place in Denman for 2018. This is very exciting and will provide support to families in our community. Information packs and enrolment forms are available at the school office. Please return completed forms to the school. Congratulations to Mrs Fuiono and Mr Garner who last week completed their Art of Leadership training in Sydney. The training involves six intensive days of professional learning and focuses on choice theory and the psychology of leading. This knowledge will be invaluable as the executive team develop the 2018-2020 school plan and lead the school forward into the new cycle. Any books will need to be returned next week (Week 7) during your library lesson. If students have any overdue books, please return them to avoid the distribution of overdue notices. I would like to take this opportunity to thank students who have utilised our library this year. We have seen a dramatic increase with the amount of books borrowed and the 2017 Book Fair was a huge success. The addition of our new furniure has been popular with students and I look forward to more exciting Literacy opportunities in 2018. Mrs Whiteman

NSW PREMIER’S SPELLING BEE Congratulations to Phoebe who competed in the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee in Sydney last week. More than 150,000 NSW school students competed in this year's competition, with 89 qualifying for the final held at the Eugene Goossens Hall in Ultimo on Wednesday November 8th. This year marked the biggest state final of the Premier’s Spelling Bee since the competition was introduced back in 2004. The Premier's Spelling Bee, held since 2004, is designed to improve the literacy skills of NSW primary school students. The competition has two divisions: junior for Years 3 and 4, and senior for Years 5 and 6. In Phoebe’s division, senior students were challenged with words such as pendulous, delicatessen and antiquity. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the Spelling Bee provided an opportunity for students to learn new words and explore the English language. Spelling is the cornerstone of literacy, and the Spelling Bee is invaluable in promoting the development of skills necessary for clear communication," she said. “It encourages our students to embrace a love of spelling and, in turn, a love of reading which will stay with them for the rest of their lives." Thank you to Mrs Fuiono and Mr Garner who were able to attend on the day.

KINDER TRANSITION – DAY 4 Our 2018 Kindergarten students are certainly embracing Denman Public School and Day 4 of our Transition Program was no exception. Our class is growing each week and it is wonderful to see students forming great friendships. The day began with some numeracy skills involving the number 4 and alphabet fun. ‘The cow tripped over the moon’ was a highlight for students at reading time and Miss Duggan is thrilled with the enthusiasm of all children. We look forward to some exciting new activities next week. Thank you to Mrs Jones for her guidance with our Year 4 Buddy program. Students visited their Kindergarten buddies at the Denman Children’s Centre last week and enjoyed a fantastic morning of fun and games.

KINDERGARTEN CLASS NEWS Term 4 is certainly flying by quickly, and students are looking forward to many exciting activities that they will be participating in. In Week 1, students walked to the Denman Multi Purpose Service to entertain residents, staff and visitors. They sang Miss Polly had a Dolly, When You’re Smiling, and expertly played percussion instruments to Alley Cat. They are to be congratulated for their excellent behaviour throughout the excursion. Our Science unit for this term is titled On the Move. Students have designed some very interesting, moving toys, and have learned about how their skeleton helps them to move. They will also be learning about how forces such as pushing and pulling can be used to move objects, and how different surfaces can affect movement. In History, students have been learning about religious and community events that are important to families, and how these are celebrated in different cultures. They have also become very clever at using a calendar to track important events such as Red Nose Day, Australia Day and Anzac Day. Students are thoroughly enjoying their Zumba sessions. After this program finishes, they will have the Intensive Swimming Program to look forward to. Thank you again, to the adults who freely give their time to listen to our Kindergarten students read every week. Thank you also, to the adults who accompanied the students to and from the Denman Multi Purpose Service, and to those who cooked delicious treats and assisted at the Kindergarten Cake Stall.

CRAZY HAIR DAY Next Wednesday November 22nd, Denman Public School SRC will host Crazy Hair Day. Students are encouraged to get crazy and inventive with their hairstyles and dress out of uniform. A gold coin donation will be accepted to raise valuable funds for our SRC.

SPORTS NEWS Intensive Swimming

Permission notes went home last week to Kindergarten, Years 1, 2, 3 and selected Years 4, 5 and 6 students for our annual Intensive Swimming program. The program will begin Monday of Week 8 and finish Friday of Week 9, running for 10 days in total. All permission notes are to be returned to your classroom teacher before Wednesday November 22nd. This year there will be NO cost for the program thanks to a grant from Sporting Schools, which will cover all admission into the pool and the SRC for generously covering the cost of the bus. It is compulsory that all students wear a rash shirt or t-shirt during lessons at the pool in line with our sun safe policy.

SCHOOL HATS Denman Public School implements the NSW Department of Education’s SunSmart policy. All children are required to wear a hat while playing in the playground. If students do not have a hat they must play in a shaded area. Broad brimmed hats and school caps are available for purchase at the office for $15.00.
