Sports Day Thank you to everyone who assisted in any way for Sports Day, and well done to Darren Woolford and the sports committee for a great event. The strength in the community of our Community School is evident when you witness the range of parents, grandparents and community who lent a hand in a multitude of ways on the day to help it run smoothly. Operation Flinders Welcome back to our team of campers who attended Operation Flinders. The camp is a terrific experience and interesting way to gain 20 SACE credits. A big Thankyou to Darren Rhind & Sarah Agnew for taking the students. Open Day I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the Parent/Teacher/Student interviews next week, and the Open Day in week 11. Don’t forget if you have any concerns, issues, ideas or suggestions about any aspect of our school please contact us on 86642700, or email [email protected]. Kind Regards, Mat Evans Principal

Congratulations to all students who participated in Sports Day. It was a great day and well done to all the teachers involved, as always without their organisation these events will not happen. Congratulations to all award winners and to Eyre on being the overall winner. The bully audit will be conducted prior to the end of the term. Students will either complete the audit with their class teacher or electronically. Please talk to your children about bullying and the seriousness of it. The results from the audit are analysed by staff to ensure all students are safe whilst at school. If you have any questions about the audit please contact me at the school. SRC has a casual day on Thursday 2 April. Please ensure appropriate attire is worn and bring along a gold coin donation. A reminder that R-6 assembly is on Friday mornings at 9am. This is a great opportunity for students to be recognised for their great work. So please come along and support the R-6 students and teachers.

As always if you have any queries or concerns about your child please do not hesitate to contact me at the school or via email [email protected]. Jillian Hudson R-6 Coordinator YEAR 3 CLASS The Year Three Class has been developing their number sense with many different activities. We began by counting collections of all sorts of objects from pegs to pebbles. The question posed was "Is it more efficient to count one by one or in groups?" The children found that group counting had many advantages. If they lost count they could easily recount and they could organise the groups so that the amounts could easily be recognised. The next activities were based around counting large amounts up to one thousand. They discovered that one thousand is a large amount and counting that far takes commitment and organisation.

Trading games take thinking about groups to a new level. At first the children worked in base 4 in the land of the lizards. Here, when they had a group of 4 ghekkoes, they could trade up to one lizard. This trading goes on with dice throwing until the players have made enough to trade up to dinosaurs. We then switched to base 10 (our number system) and traded up using single pop sticks, bundles of ten pop sticks and finally bundles of one hundred pop sticks. In one lesson we worked as one large group bundling into tens and found out we had over three thousand pop sticks. They make a big pile. We have also taken our learning to addition with trading and we are now learning times tables to consolidate understanding of groups. The children do three rounds of times table drills every day trying to pass levels. They have been shown different ways to help them learn tables such as using blocks or even Lego to make the groups, rote learning off table charts and watching table raps on the whiteboard. There are many ways for learners to practice tables at home or school. We would love to hear from anyone who has stories about how they learned tables or who has a trick to help remember a particular table. Write us a letter to the Year Three Class. Maths does matter. STAGE 1 & 2 – FOOD AND HOSPITALITY

CHAPLAINCY SUPPORT GROUP Would like to invite you to the Easter Breakfast on Thursday 2nd of April 2015 at 8am. All Welcome at the Jamestown Community School.

Principal’s Scholarship award The University of Adelaide’s Principal’s Scholarship is provided to support students through their study. This particular scholarship is given to a high achieving academic student who contributes significantly to school life and the wider community. The school is consulted throughout the year for relevant details upon Year 12 students and then the university inform us of the recipient, following the Year 12 Results release. I would like to congratulate Bianca Joubert on being the 2014 recipient of this award. Her commitment to her studies and participation in the school and wider community was of a great benefit to the school and the Jamestown Community. Behaviour Update Thank you for your support thus far with our new approach to managing misbehaviour. A major difference in the way that we are handling misbehaviour is the sending home of a Form B to be signed by the parent. This parent signature is really important as it signifies that a conversation has transpired at home, and then results in the student returning to the next lesson – providing a follow-up discussion has been instigated by the student, with the teacher involved. Mentor Process An initiative at JCS that we value is how we offer support to our Year 12 students and those who are undertaking off-site learning programs like VET or Open Access.

Page 4: PRINCIPAL’S NEWS 5 - Jamestown Community School files/25th March 2015 with Aust Girls... · Principal, Regional Director ... and bring along a gold coin donation. A reminder that

Students in Year 12 and undertaking components of their learning at various sites are supported by a teacher who voluntarily meets up with them on a regular basis, to support their organisation, study habits and keep track of student well-being. This year’s mentors have all been confirmed, discussions initiated, with letters describing the process going home this week. If parents have any concerns about this process or would like some additional feedback on their student, please ring the front office to arrange a time. 7-10 Showcase Assembly See the advert in this week’s newsletter for our upcoming Showcase Assembly. We are working on raising the profile of these assemblies and would greatly appreciate some parental support along the way. Hopefully we can see you there during the Open Morning at 9am in the Stadium, Thursday 9th of April. Danya McKay 7-12 Coordinator

Students have been under the supervision of a teacher and in addition instructed by licensed club members who have volunteered their time to teach the students the safe operation of an air pistol.

This has been an enjoyable and valuable experience for students to visit a local club of this kind. I would like to thank all club members and specifically Don Bottrall and Rex Hockey for this unique opportunity.

The club has their air pistol shoot every Tuesday night at the air range on South Terrace (alongside the CFS station) commencing at 7.30pm. The Australian Girls’ choir has offered to visit the Jamestown Area as part of their 2015 National Tour

“The Australian Girls’ Choir is a much loved cultural institution in Australia and over the past 30 years many thousands of girls have been trained in singing, dancing and drama. We currently have more than 4500 girls in training with us in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, and our touring choir of 56 choristers is drawn from our senior levels in each of these cities. One of the highlights of our tours is the chance to perform for, and meet with, locals in our host cities; these experiences benefit our choristers educationally, musically, and culturally. We firmly believe that participation in the Performing Arts contributes greatly to personal growth. On previous tours when we have linked up with a school, we have had a wonderful time exchanging music. We offer the opportunity for our staff to run Performing Arts workshops with as many of your students as possible. The workshops include song, dance & drama and are suitable for both girls and boys. We also welcome the opportunity to perform with and/or for, the community. It is standard for the host group to use the proceeds from any public performance as their own fundraiser for a special cause. We would love to explore the possibility of establishing such a relationship with Jamestown Community School on our tour. Our visit to Jamestown will be dependent upon finding suitable accommodation for our girls. As we billet while on tour, we’d like to see if your school community would be willing and able to host our girls during our stay in their homes. The average age of the 56 girls is 12 and 13, so we would prefer the girls to be hosted in pairs. The girls are perfectly happy and comfortable to sleep on mattresses on the floor and the six staff will stay at a nearby hotel. We are very happy to fit in with host families’ needs and can have early morning meeting times and late afternoon collection times if hosts need this. We find that the cultural exchange that we all experience on tour incredibly valuable and girls often share friendships with hosts for many years after a visit. Also, our relationships with host groups in the past have often become reciprocal and our choristers in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney have hosted many choirs on visits to the cities that we operate in.” In order for us to be able to host the choir we need to find billets for the 56 girls. If you would like to host 2, 3 or more girls for the 3 nights please complete the tear of slip and return to Prue Hunter at school by Wednesday 8th April

*** Please note that, according to DECD guidelines, all members of the hosting household who are over 18 must have a criminal history screening. We can arrange this through the school. Proposed Itinerary Thurs July 2 Lunchtime Arrive Jamestown

Mid morning Hosts drop AGC choristers off at meeting point - school to nominate best time for drop off time

Our family has just had a wonderful time with Cate, Chloe, Allyssa and Victoria and the children feel they have "new sisters"!

Sunday was a sad day saying goodbye to them. The choir girls were such a credit to their families, school and our country.

They were just the most wonderful inspiring performers and they were also a total joy to have to stay! They brought such fun

into our houses and have really inspired our children on the performing arts side of life.

Canberra 2014 Host Family

We hosted two girls on your last visit and it was such a lovely experience that we decided to host again this year. Nesceda

and Vani were the most well-mannered guests we have ever had, noticing every detail of how to be of assistance and being

alert to the ways of our family. They are open-minded, aware, gentle, and full of life. Always ready, always a smile. The

performance by the AGC was AMAZING! The songs were entertaining and mesmerizing. All the girls had such wonderful

expressions and really acted out their part. Such professionalism. We look forward to your next visit!

Singapore 2014 Host Family

Recently my family hosted two members of the Australian Girls Choir, at our home in Launceston as part of the choir’s tour of

Tasmania. It was our first time acting as a host family for this sort of event, and it was a tremendously positive experience.

The girls were more than just polite; they were friendly, enthusiastic and fitted in very well with our own children. They were

a pleasure to host, and I would like to convey my thanks and appreciation to them and to the choir.
