Principles of Social LearningThe Social Cognitive Learning Theory is a theory developed by well known psychology professor Albert Bandura. It states that people influence and are influenced by their environments. Learning occurs by observing others and modeling after that behavior. As we progress in online learning, we need to be able to incorporate these principles.

There are four conditions to effectively model behavior: Attention, Retention, Reproduction and Motivation.

Definition Retrieve’s Solution

Attention

Attention is the process of noticing a behavior. We observe many behaviors daily and the more something stands out the more likely it is to gain our attention.

X Students are engaged through live and asynchronous videos.

X Instructors guide students to areas of needed improvement.

Retention

Retention is how a behavior is remembered. A behavior may be noticed but is it not always retained.

X Students can communicate via live or asynchronous text, video, images, files and web conferencing.

X Students can retrieve anything within the system with our advanced search feature to help them recall a topic of interest.

X Timeclips are used to identify key topical areas.

Reproduction

Reproduction is performing the behavior that has been demonstrated. Practice of learned behavior leads to improvement and skill advancement.

X Students demonstrate competency in a specific skill set or proficiency via live assessments.

X Instructors can include the integration of experiential learning activities.

Motivation

Motivation is the will to perform that behavior. This depends on the perceived rewards or consequences of the observer on whether to reproduce the behavior.

X Students can share achievement via social media along with a video demonstrating newly acquired skills.

X Students create relationships with instructors and other students by participating in live conversations, rather than text-only communication.
