The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a voluntary organization in the Catholic Church. It was founded in 1833 for the members to be able to be in the service of the poor. The association was patterned after the Confraternities of Charity which was the service to the poor that St. Vincent de Paul started in 1625.

At St. Cecilia and St. Margaret-St. John we have a St. Vincent de Paul conference that helps those in our parish and community. I always feel very well supported by this group of people that are willing to help out others in so many different ways. Each month we take a collection for our St. VdP chapters and I am always so grateful for your generosity. We have had parishioners that have really felt the support they needed to get through rough patches in their lives from our St. VdP conferences. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brings peace to those who are overwhelmed with life’s burdens. Below is a witness that I would like to share. It is a witness given by one of the members of the SVDP conferences in our region.

SEP TE MBER 27, 2020 St. Vincent de Paul

Witness From One of Our St. Vincent de Paul MembersAs a member of StC’s conference of the Society of SVDP, I find it fulfilling to be able to connect the generosity of our parishioners with our neighbors in need. Especially now during the COVID pandemic, there are many in our midst that struggle to cover rent, utility and grocery expenses. With The parish’s strong support, SVDP conference members are able to be the voice and hands of Christ, as we talk with folks and provide them with both material assistance and spiritual hope. I have enjoyed getting to know my fellow conference members; together we strengthen each other’s faith by reflecting on the gospel and how we try to put God’s word into action. Being able to serve others and share Christ’s love for all of us makes me glad that I am a member of this society.

Special Message from Fr. Jamie

For those of you who might not have heard, there was recently an advertisement that ran in The Cincinnati Enquirer and The Cincinnati Herald paid for by some members of St. Anthony Parish. The signers of the ad expressed their unhappiness with my pastoral care and leadership of their parish. The ad led to a few news articles that basically reiterated the content of the ad. This has been time consuming and taxing for me and for those who work directly with me. Through all of this, I want you to know that I have deeply appreciated the prayers and support of so many of you.

The underlying problem seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of the Church, her teaching and her structure. We are not a congregationalist church with teachings and liturgy tailored to personal taste or group consensus. The Holy Spirit protects the Church from that tendency and has certainly helped me as Pastor in our whole region to be faithful to my mission despite sometimes hurtful criticism.

In all of this, I am certainly sorry for the hurt that this situation has caused my family and our regional parishioners. While these events have taken much time and attention on my part, I pray it has not been a burden for any of you. Throughout this I have diligently striven to ensure that my pastoral activity treats all of our three parishes equitably. I am grateful for the members of the St. Anthony parish council and other parish leaders throughout the region who are working together to faithfully build up the Body of Christ. I am also very grateful to our archbishop who has always supported me and encouraged me in my work.

Below is the statement the archdiocese released regarding the situation:

“Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr fully supports Fr. Weber in his ministry as pastor of St. Anthony Parish. Fr. Weber has worked closely with the parish council for the last four years and has been faithfully fulfilling his pastoral duty to teach, sanctify, and gov-ern the community entrusted to his care. Chief among the responsibilities of every pastor is providing the faithful with the Mass and the other sacraments. The sacraments are a gift entrusted by Christ to the Church, not to any one individual or group, and so they must always be celebrated in accord with the Church’s tradition and laws. Archbishop Schnurr is grateful to Fr. Weber for his dedication in celebrating the sacraments with and for his parishioners in communion with the Church.”

CATECHESIS (kat’i-ke’sis) n.What happens when we die?In death, body and soul are separated. The body decays, while the soul goes to meet God and waits to be reunited with its risen body on the Last Day. [992-1004, 1016-1018]

How the resurrection will take place is a mystery. An image can help us to accept it: When we look at a tulip bulb we cannot tell into what a marvelously beautiful flower it will develop in the dark earth. Similarly, we know nothing about the future appear-ance of our new body. Paul is nevertheless certain: “It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory” (1 Corinthians 15:43a). (YOUCAT question 154)

FAMILY OF FAITHFamily of Faith will be the ordinary means of religious education for ALL children and parents in each parish of our Eastside Pastoral Region. It is a complete replacement for PREP (Parish Religious Education Program) and is the new avenue in which all children in the region, regardless of their parish or if they attend Catholic grade school or not, will prepare for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.

Session 1 began on Sun., Sept. 13, at 11:30 AM-12:30 PM, and will take place on the second Sunday of each month from Sept.–May.

You can still register! Go to our www.eastsidefaith.org/fof and fill out the online registration form. If your child is receiving a sacrament, you must provide a copy of their baptismal certificate.

KNOW YOUR SAINTSSts. Michael, Gabriel, and RaphaelAngels—messengers from God—appear frequently in Scrip-ture, but only Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are named.

Michael appears in Daniel’s vision as “the great prince” who defends Israel against its enemies; in the Book of Revela-tion, he leads God’s armies to final victory over the forces of evil. Devotion to Michael is the oldest angelic devotion, rising in the East in the fourth century. The Church in the West began to observe a feast honoring Michael and the angels in the fifth century.

Gabriel also makes an appearance in Daniel’s visions, an-nouncing Michael’s role in God’s plan. His best-known appear-ance is an encounter with a young Jewish girl named Mary, who consents to bear the Messiah.

Raphael’s activity is confined to the Old Testament story of Tobit. There he appears to guide Tobit’s son Tobiah through a series of fantastic adventures which lead to a threefold happy ending: Tobiah’s marriage to Sarah, the healing of Tobit’s blind-ness and the restoration of the family fortune.

The memorials of Gabriel (March 24) and Raphael (Octo-ber 24) were added to the Roman calendar in 1921. The 1970 revision of the calendar joined their feasts to Michael’s.

What is the Sacrament of Confession The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the most unique and beautiful aspects of Catholicism. Jesus Christ, in His abundant love and mercy, established the Sacrament of Confession, so that we as sinners can obtain forgiveness for our sins and reconcile with God and the Church. The sacrament “washes us clean,” and renews us in Christ. “Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained’” (John 20:21-23).

Confession is available at St. Margaret—St. John on Saturday from 2:00—2:30 pm,

Sunday from 9:00 to 9:30 am, during Holy Hour every Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm and weekdays following the 11:45 am daily
