Dear Flute Society Members,

It is hard to believe that it is

already half way through the year! Last weekend was the annual Carolyn White Memorial Scholarship competition, adjudicated by Guila Tiver, Head of Vocal Studies at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. I was interstate and missed what was, by all accounts, a wonderful competition with some very talented young flautists. Many thanks to all the teachers, accompanists, Flute Society committee members and of course the competitors themselves, for their hard work. Congratulations to Aleksandra Olekalns, winner for 2010, and to Keira Simmons in second place and to Emily Squires for her Honourable Mention.

One of the Flute Society’s events

later this year is a session for teachers. It will be held on September 15 and will be an opportunity for teachers to get together, exchange ideas and have a glance over some new flute text books, exercise and study books. I mentioned the Flute Artistry book by Phyllis Louke and Patricia George, for instance, in my last President’s Report, and also the new Technical Workbook by Paul

Perhaps if you have a favourite book that you love using, you could bring it as well. We will also collate some useful exercises on tone development, articulation and other techniques from our own collections. We hope that you can be there!

Have you heard the news that Sir

The Bill McBirnie Duo/Quartet – Mercy. Label: Extreme Flute. Recorded in 2009. Bill McBirnie, flute; Robi Botos, piano; Pat Collins, bass; John Sumner, drums Order from http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mcbirnie/from/viglink My Space: http://www.myspace.com/billmcbirnieextremeflute Sir James Galway’s Website: http://www.thegalwaynetwork.com/jazz/jazz.htm Canadian flautist Bill McBirnie is an exciting virtuoso jazz, bebop and Latin specialist. He is based in Toronto. Bill studied with Canadian flautist and composer, Robert Aitken, and Cuban charanga legend, Richard Eques. Bill is known for his performances on flutes ranging from bass flute to piccolo. He is also recognised as an accomplished improviser. Bill is the resident Jazz

Specialist for the Galway Flute Chat. The tracks on Mercy include Baila Cinderella (written by and dedicated to Hubert Laws), Willow Weep For Me (dedicated to Jeremy Steig), Airegin, Stuffy Turkey, Gentle Rain, I’m Walkin’, Yardbird Suite, Way Down Yonder In New Orleans, Moment’s Notice, Minha Saudade, Groovin’ High and Mercy. Five of the tracks are for flute and piano; the rest for flute with jazz trio. This is one of the most relaxed and vibrant jazz flute CDs that I have heard. All of the performers are first class. The outstanding Hungarian jazz pianist, Robi Botos, composed the title track, and is the featured associate artist. A variety of jazz styles are presented, including medium swing, bepop, bossa nova and dixieland, composed by jazz greats such as Sonny Rollins, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie. There are some fantastic performances and improvisations to enjoy.

‘Great, great playing ... I have never heard anyone play like this … Bill, when you read this, I have to take my hat off to you. This is great playing by any standard’.

Sir James Galway.

This CD also blew me away! Do order a copy.♫

Times of intensity, marked with brightness, romance, density and lyricism... all the qualities of this rigorous and inspired young artist (Journal de Geneve, 1992).

lent a special natural lighting to the night. This program included the premier of the work commissioned by Alison Rossser, Miserere, written by young South Australian composer, Nathan Royle. The second of our performances here was to be in an outdoors area in the civic square beside the Cathedral. Unfortunately the weather threatened and the event was moved indoors, into the magnificent Christchurch Cathedral. We were delighted to be playing inside

the Cathedral instead of outside. It is a beautiful place and it certainly gave our flutes some lovely resonances. A roving crowd of tourists visiting the Cathedral and those who regularly come to the performances made up a very appreciative audience. The whole trip was superbly planned and organised by Kerryn Schofield, and we thank her for all her efforts on our behalf. New Zealand is an energetic and vibrant country, with a large appreciation of the arts in all forms. The trip was one we will all remember for many years. ♫

Emmanuel Pahud

RECENT EVENTS: ELIZA TONES FLUTE ENSEMBLE TOUR TO NEW ZEALAND (Cont’d)

by Linda Pirie Named ‘Instrumentalist of the Year 1997’ at the prestigious Victoires de la Musique award ceremony in Paris, Emmanuel Pahud is widely regarded as one of the finest flautists of his generation. Of French and Swiss descent, Emmanuel Pahud was born in Geneva on January 27, 1970. He started to study music at the age of six. He graduated in 1990 with the Premier Prix from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, after which he continued his studies with Aurèle Nicolet. His other teachers included François Binet, Michel Moinil, Carlos Bruneel, Peter-Lukas Graf, Michel Debost, Alain Marion, Pierre-Yves Artaud and Christian Lardé. Emmanuel Pahud won First Prize in many major International Music Competitions such as Duino in 1988 and Kobe in 1989, and won eight out of the twelve special prizes at the Concours de Genève in 1992. He took the Soloists Prize in the World-wide French-speaking Community Radio Awards, and the European Council’s Juventus Prize. He is also a laureate of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation and of the International Tribune for Musicians of UNESCO. Emmanuel Pahud was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2009 by Ambassador Bernard de Montferrand for his contribution to French music.

At the age of 22, Emmanuel Pahud was appointed Principal Flute of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Claudio Abbado. He previously held the same position with the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

Emmanuel Pahud gives frequent recitals and concerts in Europe, Japan and America. He has played as soloist with such famous orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Berlin Radio Symphony, Stuttgart Radio Symphony, Suisse Romande, Zurich Tonhalle, Tokyo Symphony, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, Osaka Century, London Symphony, Belgian National, Liege Philharmonic, Dutch Radio and Australian Chamber. Emmanuel Pahud has made recordings and performed with pianist Éric Le Sage throughout his career. His repertoire extends from baroque to contemporary music.

Here is what some critics have to say about Emmanuel Pahud’s flute playing:

His technique and his musicality

have revealed an unusual confidence, the dynamism and the sensibility of a true musician

(Le Soir - 1985). A playing full of contrasts... an amazingly wide sound

(Basler Zeitung - 1991).

RECENT EVENTS: ELIZA TONES FLUTE ENSEMBLE TOUR TO NEW ZEALAND

by Julie Todd

In April this year a group of eight South Australian flautists, under the leadership of Alison Rosser and Kerryn Schofield, went on a goodwill tour of New Zealand. Some of our contacts were made at the Australian Flute Festival and later refreshed by Kerryn during her research when setting up our trip. The first group we visited are students of Clair Penny, who has a thriving teaching practice in Kerikeri in the north region of the North Island. A group of approximately twenty-five young people gathered for a day of activities. These included a mini-masterclass with Catherine Kammermann, ensemble playing with Kerryn, conducting in her own inspiring style, and a posture and tone session with Alison, who had us all standing taller and sounding better. Kerryn and I played a concert featuring our low flutes, to demonstrate their unique sounds. During the ensemble session, all the students were given the chance to try the larger instruments. Kerryn’s contra-bass flute stole the limelight, with lines of students and teachers alike queuing for a photo playing it. The whole group of freshly enthused students played an amazing concert for parents at the end of the day. The fun of playing in a flute choir has certainly been established in Kerikeri. The adults adjourned to the ‘Black Olive’ restaurant to properly celebrate a good day of flute fun. A gap of three days before our next booking in Wellington gave us all a chance to do some sightseeing. We all went our separate ways and took in the sites of an amazing and spectacular country. The thermal wonders of Rotorua and the Art Deco city of Napier were popular destinations. We reconvened in Wellington for the three day Flute School, organised by Rochelle Eastwood. As guests this time we ran various sessions in the program. Rosie Carr ran a class on Jazz playing and improvisation. Posture and Tone with Alison had the same amazing results. A Teachers’ Forum with Sally Eads, Catherine and Kerryn led to some interesting exchanges of ideas. The Low

Flutes demonstration again showed the rich variety of sound flutes can achieve. The young students again had the chance to play the larger flutes in their own ensemble session. Once again parents gathered and were delighted by the progress and enthusiasm of the young players. I’m sure there are some inspired young players in Wellington this year. Some members of the Wellington Flute Ensemble came along to make our acquaintance. It was a pleasure to chat to other flute players and hopefully they too will go back to their groups with some fresh ideas. Another three-day break between engagements gave us another chance to explore. We all made our various ways to Christchurch. A few of us coincided in a visit to Hanmer Springs and enjoyed the local thermal hot pools. There is also a great spa where a flute player can get those tired muscles revitalised with a massage. Others went to Queenstown to enjoy the white water experiences and the views from the gondola. They then had a pleasant drive north to meet us in Christchurch.

Christchurch, which is Adelaide’s sister city, is a beautiful city with a very English feel. Especially as the River Avon flows through it with punts gliding by. There are colonial buildings to view from the river and trams doing the tourist circuit. The Sister City Committee and council staff staged a reception for us at the Council Offices. A spread of fine New Zealand food and wine were provided and a wide variety of Christchurch’s flute population came to welcome the Aussies. It was a great chance to discuss the directions and strengths of both our countries’ musical lives and to reminisce of times and people we had in common.

We were invited to perform at the art gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu for an early evening atrium concert. The acoustics in the atrium were so good that visitors on every floor in the gallery were able to enjoy the music. A large crowd of people came along and heard our varied program whilst the metal sculpture beside us rotated seemingly in time to our music. A spectacular sunset glowed through the glass walls of the front of the building and

What a wonderful opportunity to join other

adult learners to play flute together! I

certainly don’t want to be a soloist, and it

was fun to have others to play with in an

understanding and non-judgmental arena. I

have participated in similar afternoons with

the children, but it was less threatening and

more satisfying to be in a similar position to

other adults! Different abilities seem to be

catered for, with enough challenge to make

it interesting for everyone. Thanks to the

Society for facilitating a lovely afternoon –

A large group of flutes, accompanied by

their friendly owners, a fantastic venue

with lofty ceilings to hold our melodies,

a thoughtful selection of music, well

organised and cheerfully conducted, all

building to a crescendo of scones, tea and

conversation. Everyone involved in the

Adult Amateurs Flute Afternoon seemed

to enjoy the event. Thanks to the

organising team for their considerable

efforts. The sound of so many flutes

together and knowing that we all

contributed to that sound was quite a

special experience. Cath Caon♫

On Sunday I went to the Flute Fun

Day of 2010. There were some very

funky hats and the colours stood

out. We played in groups and

played lots of fun games. At the end of the whole day all the parents

came to watch a great concert by

us. Three people won prizes and

my friend Amelia was one of them.

The highlight of the day, for me,

was all of the great songs played. Amanda Reid (age 11)

On Sunday May 23 I had a Flute Fun Day. First we did some notes all together then we went into groups. I was in the green group. I had a green star on my name tag. My teacher was really nice and had a tiny green hat. We played Harry Potter, Get Ready and Cop Chase. I was on the top line and I played the kazoo in When The Saints Go Marching In. We practiced really hard on our flutes and then we played some really fun games. Then we had a break with scrumdiddlyunptious food and green cordial. At the end all the parents came in and we played our concert. I didn’t make any mistakes in Get Ready. We finished

with Ode To Joy on the bottles. It sounded so, so cool. I won a massive Kit Kat for coming first for my fancy hat, which I made with musical notes on it. I felt proud and really good for myself. Everyone clapped us for our lovely music. Thank you to the teachers. It was so much fun I can’t wait till next year!!!! Clara Mussell (age 7)
