CD/DVD Digipack Design Conventions

A digipack is a type of packaging for discs which folds out like a book rather than

open like a conventional case. It is made from card rather than plastic and the disc is

held on a thin transparent tray. It is most commonly used to package special edition

CDs or DVDs due to the packaging being easily modified to hold multiple discs by

being made from more panels that will simply fold

away – this makes the packaging more suited for

multiple disc special edition releases.

Digipack is a registered trademark of AGI media

who originally developed the packaging style;

however the term digipack has come into common

use for any similar style packaging. Even when

produced by other companies or with varying materials.

CD/DVD Digipack Magazine Ad Conventions

Our advert will employ the conventions of a digipak magazine advert. So the image

will be very important, the advert will include an image of the artist and it will be the

main focus of the ad.

The other typical conventions of a digipak magazine advertisement are:

The name of the Artist

The name of the Album

The release date

Website and Myspace addresses

Reviews and ratings of the album

Record Label branding

Pictures of the band members or relevant visual imagery to sell the Digipak

Brand Identity

The magazine advert and the digipak will need to immediately attract attention and be

eye-catching. So when someone is flicking through a magazine the advert needs to

stand out on the page and catch the target audience’s attention. So the brand needs to

be bold and make a clear statement about the artist and the genre of music. The genre

being rap it needs to appeal to the audience by following certain conventions of the

genre so the audience knows what the brand is all about. There will be a clear image

of the artist so our artist will represent himself on the front cover. The colours that

will be used are mainly red and blue as they are both bright and bold colours and the

audience will become aware. The font used will be a bold vivid clearly stating the

typical conventions of an advertisement or a CD and will follow the colour scheme.

The presentation is very important and it needs to be clearly laid out so the layout

needs to be simple but creative, it will focus on the image and the title.

Skills Development Notes

We learnt to use Photoshop and the various tools so we could edit and manipulate

images that we can use for our product design. The main tools that we learnt to use

were Marquee tool, Lasso tool, Quick selection tool, Crop tool, Brush tool, Clone

stamp tool, Gradient tool and the Type tool. Some of the other tools were hidden in

the tool box under some of the other icons. To open the menu you need to right click

on the arrow in the lower right corner of the icon and the other options will appear.

I learnt that anything created on Photoshop should be on a

new layer so you are able to select a certain image or text

and manipulate it. When using the marquee tool I highlighted an image or a part of an

image and configured it, the following image is an example of me using the marquee

tool to select a part of an image.

I used Hue/Saturation to add some colour to the model.

To find this you need to go to Select part of the image

then go on Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation then

adjust the colour that you want that portion to be.

I learnt to use the Lasso Tool and selected the magnetic lasso tool by right clicking on

the tool icon so the alternative tools.

I went around the image to separate the car from the background and the copy and

paste into a new document. I found this to be a very useful tool as I was able to

separate an image from a background and get rid of the background.

Other useful tools that I used and screen shots that I took to show different examples

are below.
