Dear Colleagues

As we enter the new Lunar Year with the consolidation of our distribution business well under way, we are now entering the phase of integrating our drilling business.

Itochu Corporation, one of the largest and oldest trading companies in Japan, has expressed interest to invest in our drilling business. This has led to KS Drilling and Itochu signinga joint venture agreement for which the terms are currently being finalized. This joint venture will be one of many initiatives that will lay the foundation for our future growth.

Furthermore, the Group is committed to grow the business internationally. The recent Leading International Business Award presented to SSH by HSBC signifies our capabilities in expanding our business on a global scale and this will be the main thrust in continuing our road of expansion overseas.

It is essential that all of us focus on creating a KS Energy Group that has, at its core, the highest level of efficiency and productivity in order to create the most value for our customers. If we are able to adopt a positive mind set towards our consolidation program and work together as a team, I am certain that we will all benefit from being part of the most successful integrated energy solutions provider on the international stage.

International Business Award

SSH Corporation Ltd, a subsidiary of KS Distribution, won the HSBC Leading International Business Award. The award was presented at the Singapore 1000 gala dinner held at The ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore on 21 January 2011, attended by Chairman, Mr. Kris Wiluan and Deputy Managing Director of SSH Corporation, Mr. richard Wiluan.

A series of road shows was rolled out by the HR team

from 16 to 21 December 2010 to share the new policy

on job grades and benefits entitlements for all Singapore

based employees.

The new policy is aimed at providing a compensation program which is flexible to adjust to changing economic conditions and to individual needs. employees were briefed on some changes of the benefits including medical and dental benefits, group hospitalization and surgical insurance. new benefit such as term life insurance was also introduced.

a subsidiary of KS Distribution, obtained ISO/TS 29001:2007

certification on 18 February 2011. The certification defines the quality

management system for product and service supply organizations for the petroleum, petrochemical

and natural gas industries.

Chinese New Year Lo Hei Gathering

They were joined by some distinguished guests and an overseas delegation. It was celebrated as part of Chinese new year, marked with a traditional dish, yusheng which symbolizes abundance and prosperity. In his message, Chairman Mr. Kris Wiluan highlighted the organizational changes within KS energy group which will bring new opportunities for all employees. “I wish all of you a healthy and bountiful year ahead,” concluded Mr. Wiluan. Lion dance and god of Fortune entertained all while enjoying buffet style luncheon. At the end of the gathering, all received a lucky red packet from Chairman.

news From aBroadHaving been in Bangkok for 18 years, Heng Ting Huat,

the Country Manager of Deltametal (Thailand) knows the best about the city. “The best time to visit Bangkok

is between November and January, as the weather is very nice during that period,” he advised. “Food here

is cheap and delicious,” he added. While he enjoys Thai’s yummy food, he admits that he still craves for Singapore food. He has a list of food that he misses

the most. “Bak kut teh, mee siam, lontong, laksa, roti prata and chicken rice”, he mentioned with a smile.

Deltametal has 44 staff and is an ISO 9001:2008 certified company. It occupies a three storey office

building and a 4,004 sqm warehouse where its Industrial Materials and Welding products are stored.

It has a branch office located in Rayong Industrial Estate. Working hours are Monday to Friday (8.30 am to

17.30 pm) and Saturday (8.30 am to 12 pm).

Dr. Adam Paul BrunetBorn and bred in Oxford, england, Dr. Adam Paul Brunet

calls Bali, Batam, Singapore and of course Oxford, home. “I love Bali, it’s so relaxing and the people are

very friendly,” said Dr. Brunet who has a house in Sanur, a beach paradise in South east Bali. He used to travel to

Bali at least once a month, “but I have not been to Bali for the past four months,” he laughed. Understandably, as his time is now tied up by his role as Chief executive

Officer of KS Drilling and Atlantic Oilfield Services, as well as Technical Director of Citra Tubindo.

nowadays, he spends most of his time between Singapore, Dubai and Batam. He spent almost 30 years in Batam, beginning in 1983 when he met Mr. Kris Wiluan in Jakarta and started Citra Tubindo, which is now a world class manufacturer and service provider for oilfield tubular goods. He shared that building Citra Tubindo was an interesting challenge. “We started from zero, no facilities, no reference. We even slept in containers!” recalled Dr. Brunet who graduated from Oxford University in 1977 and had his PHD from the same university in 1996. Focusing now on building up KS Drilling, a task he admits as more tiring than starting up Citra Tubindo, nevertheless, he is optimistic. “Keep working hard,” said Dr. Brunet who advised young generation to focus more on interesting challenges.

His jobs now require him to travel around the world almost every month. From Dubai to nigeria, to China and many other places but home is always on his mind. He would fly from Dubai to england to spend the weekend at home in Oxford with his beloved family, children Ario 23, edward 21 and Stephanie 19 and his wife nunik whom he met and married in Jakarta and now has a jewelry business there. He enjoys food cooked from greens freshly picked from his backyard garden. “you name it, we have almost everything in our garden,” said Dr. Brunet with a smile. Just to name a few, cabbage, apple, apricot, asparagus…..and the list continues. He also has a collection of wines, which he started 20 years ago, mainly from France, Italy and USA. When winter comes, skiing is the favorite activity for the Brunets. An avid nature lover, Dr. Brunet also enjoys photography and cycling.

Shirley Chiam - KS Energy ServicesFor Shirley Chiam, Chinese new year is a time to spend with loved ones and catching up with long lost friends. However, she admitted, “If time allows, it will be nice to have a short holiday outside the country.” There is one special food that she can’t go without during the festive period. It’s bak kwa, the marinated barbeque sliced meat that has been one of the Singaporean must haves. Although the price is rocketing, she would still buy it. “Perhaps, it is just the mood of the season,” smiled Shirley.

Priscilla Leow - Orient MarineThroughout the 15 days of Chinese new year, Priscilla Leow

had lots of home visiting and gatherings with lots of eating which made her feel guilty. “Because it’s at the expense of the waist line!” she joked. Her must-have dish is Loh-Hei yu Sheng,

said to be origin of Singapore, made up of shredded colorful radish with fried crackers and minced peanuts toppings, and

seasoned with oil and honey. “When served onto the table, everyone holds a pair of chopsticks, stands up and crowds

around the dish and starts stirring it as high as possible, while saying auspicious wishes, like good Health, Prosperity,

Career Promotion, good Bonus…,” explained Priscilla. “everyone would also wish the year of rabbit

will be a smooth, peaceful and prosperous one!”

Chinese New Year Celebration In Hong Kong

Article & Photo By Stella NgChinese new year is one of the biggest celebrations in Hong Kong. People in Hong Kong prepare the coming of new year with many traditions. Cleaning the house thoroughly is a must as it is believed it will sweep away bad luck and welcome good luck. Windows and doors are decorated with red paper cut-outs and couplets with popular themes like happiness, wealth and longevity. new clothes, shoes, and having a haircut also symbolize a fresh start.

A reunion dinner with family members, usually held at parent’s house on new year’s eve is very important. The sumptuous dinner traditionally includes chicken, fish, pork, ducks and sweet delicacies. The must-have is steamed fish which symbolizes saving more money at the end of this year and making more for the coming year. Other lucky foods are oyster, pig’s tongue, shrimp, porkling and pig’s leg. After dinner, people will usually go to the fresh flower market, Victoria Park being the biggest and most crowded one. Flowers are said to bring good luck.

Most importantly, the first day of Chinese new year is a time when families visit their oldest and most senior members of the family, usually their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents. early in the morning, children will greet their parents by wishing them a healthy and happy new year, and receive red packets. A sweet delicacy, Chinese nian gao is served. eating this is believed to bring higher prosperity each year. This is accompanied by dumplings, turnip cakes and melon seeds. Mandarin oranges are also an important part of the celebration as they represent good luck and fortune. Most people will go to Wong Tai Sin Temple, Buddhist Temple or Church to make a wish for their family in the morning of the 1st and 2nd day. Business managers also give red packets to employees for good luck and success.

The biggest public event is Chinese new year night Parade which takes place on the 1st day of Chinese new year. Floats with attractive decoration from all over the world parade down the streets. This is followed by a large-scale and amazing fireworks show on the 2nd night near the harbor. Throughout the festive period, golden Dragon and Ferocious Lions dance can be easily found anywhere.

It was spring when my wife and I visited the United States of America in May last year. Not wanting to be bound by strict tour packages, we explored the many cities and towns

ourselves, driving and roaming around as backpackers! B & B (Bed & Breakfast Inn) was our choice of accommodation; meanwhile, trains and rented cars were

our mode of transport connecting us to different places.

Backpacking In The USA

17-18 May 2010 - New York

newark Airport in new york welcomed us upon our arrival. Quickly, we kicked off exploring this famous city. We visited

ground Zero, a place I believe, many would try not to remember of what was happening on 11 September 2001 (9/11).

Then, we moved on to Time Square, the most bustling square of new york, where we found a shopping mall with its unique

1.5th floor. Something very interesting indeed!

19 - 20 May 2010 - Washington DC

The next day, we hopped on the train to continue our journey to Washington DC. It took about 4 hours to reach the capital of the States, though I wasn’t quite sure of the exact time as I slept through the whole journey ☺. We visited some famous museums and of course, the main target was The White House, hoping to catch the glimpse of the world’s most famous couple, Barrack and Michelle Obama!

21- 23 May 2010 - Pennsylvania

From Washington DC we decided to rent a car and drove to gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Though it was quite easy driving along the road with the help of gPS system, I found it a bit scary at first

as I was not used to driving on the left hand side. When we finally reached gettysburg, we enjoyed so much

of the sub-urban country lifestyle of this battlefield town. Our next destination was Hershey’s World, with objective none

other than to buy its famous chocolate. The price was about 30% to 40% cheaper than those in Singapore! Then, we moved on to

Lancaster, Amish County, a very interesting place to be! Being there was like escaping from a fast-paced life and indulge in the simple lifestyle at the village with breathtaking scenic farmlands.

26 - 28 May 2010 - New York

We moved back to new york towards the end of our trip and paid a visit to the empire State Building, not to forget,

the Lady, The Liberty Statue. And finally, we flew back to Singapore, seeing great sky view and sadly, noticing the

global warming effect, the melting ice…..

24 - 25 May 2010 - Philadelphia

From country lifestyle, we moved back to urban lifestyle when we drove back to return our car in Philadelphia. What caught our eyes in this city were the great murals with its creative paintings.
