1 View from the Helm A Crisis Is Not A Panic This year, along with the rest of the world, PYC faces an unprecedented challenge. When I began hearing talk of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in late December and early January, it was known by a different name and was first discov- ered in China; so far away, so distant that it barely registered on my radar. By late January, cases began cropping up on U.S. shores. As effects of this vile menace slowly crept across our country, it became evident PYC would soon need to take measures. But, what measures to take? During the first week of March, our serene routines continued as they had for countless weeks before; sleeping, eating, and dreaming of sailing adventures to come. At the March meeting of the Board of Direc- tors, Dr. Carl Dyer shared tips on proper hand wash- ing and avoidance of touching ones face. Those tips seemed perfectly reasonable at the time but as the following 36 hours progressed, increasingly stringent guidelines were passed down by the Centers For Dis- ease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Ga. By Wednesday of that week, I had already held sever- al private discussions with PYC Directors. Late Wednesday, I received texts and emails from club members wondering what our plans were for the up- coming Frostbite Race and St. Patricks Regatta. I am thankful to all Directors as well as several medical professionals within the club for their input in devel- oping a reasonable and measured plan of action. The actions we took included: ending the Frostbite season early, implementing Social Distancing procedures for the St. Patricks Regatta, canceling the March social event, and canceling the first race of the Summer Se- ries. Now, as we enter the month of April, this pandemic grips nearly every nation on Earth. In the United States, ¾ of the population is under some sort of travel restriction. Chattanoogans are being urged to continue practicing Social Distancing and society, as a whole, understands the need to distance ourselves to protect one another. Within the past 24 hours of my writing this article, the United States President as well as the countrys leading health officials have extended Social Distanc- ing guidelines until the end of April. It is my position that we follow these federal recommendations as well as the recommendations of our local officials. Follow- ing these guidelines works for our own personal safety and the safety of those we love. You are still welcome to use the club. Go sailing, have lunch on the deck, walk the trail, perform work on your boat, and help with the maintenance of the club grounds, all the while being mindful of the recom- mendations laid forth above. The Board of Directors will continue to monitor the advancement of COVID-19 and the recommendations of health officials. We will make adjustments to club schedules as those recommendations change. We are living in an unprecedented time. The deci- sions I must make are incredibly difficult, but I have heard overwhelmingly positive feedback and support coming from you. For that, I am thankful. Saint Patrick’s Day Regatta

This past Saturday Ike Landers ,age 8,had to be skipper of his family’s/parents friend’s impulse 26. Because of the coronavirus there were only 5 boats out in the water. Appar-ently Ike enjoyed being skipper and has a few words to say: ‘I honestly loved being out on the water and I was very focused and sure enough, I ended up 2nd place! It was an awesome sensation passing by our oppo-nents and having the wind blow into our faces. I also loved go-ing so fast and zooming around all over the place. I was focused and hard working and it all worked out.’

See you on the water,

Ike Landers

Upcoming Socials While early Spring has begun with some unknowns and unexpected turns, we can all take this oppor-tunity to turn our focus towards other endeavors. Our March St. Pat-rick’s Day social needed to be put on the back burner for the overall safe-ty and health of all our members. However, we have lots of fun social opportunities planned for the near future! We will revisit the possibility of a May social as the BOD deems it an appropriate time for us all to gather. Regardless of the month that we can resume socials, our next gathering will be a Caribbean Night with lots of delicious flavors from the islands of the Caribbean, including the Ba-hamas and Jamaica. An Italian Feast is also in our fu-ture, which will include flavors from Northern and Southern Italy. Each region has such a different palette of flavors, it’s fun to try some of each! Finally, every summer brings with it the 4th of July Cookout/Picnic/BBQ, which will be planned, pre-pared, and hosted by our Associate members. When we do have our socials, please plan to volunteer in some capacity for at least 1 social. That volunteer-ism can take many forms such as:

Offering to prepare an appetizer or dessert, coming early to help set up/decorate tables, etc., helping to clean up tables/trash out to the dumpster, and also staying to help clean up in the kitchen. We have a small battalion of folks who AL-WAYS volunteer to help and they are absolutely wonderful for offering their time and service. It would be fantastic for us to share that re-sponsibility and not have the same people doing those duties each time. You are welcome to email me with whatever task you would be willing to volunteer for: [email protected] Our hope is that we will be able to get everyone together (sooner rather than later) and when that time comes, we will surely make it a fun, celebratory-filled evening! Please stay safe and well during this time of quarantine/social distancing and, who knows…. this could be a perfect time to possibly rediscover old or forgotten pastimes.

Warmest regards,

Susan Howell

New Optimist Dinghies

Last fall McLaughlin Boat Works con-tacted Sail Camp with a very gener-ous offer. They had collected 10 Opti-mist Dinghies, some new, some traded in. Most of the boats had a minor defect that precluded selling them on the open market. We negotiated to buy just the hulls for $1150 a piece. A new club Opti-mist sells for about $3000. Our existing fleet of Optimist dated to 1996 when McLaughlin first became a class builder. Most of them were similar blemished boats that were never meas-ured and could not be raced in high level events. (Many of you older members may remember donating $600 to buy one of those original 16 boats.) All the new fleet are measured. In re-cent years we had repaired our aging fleet. But early in our program we did not have bow bumpers that protect the from end in a crash. The front cor-ners ,Deck and Hull, of over half the boats were destroyed. Mclaughlin did a quick repair of the corners and other cosmetic defects. Over the winter we sold 12 of our worst Optimist at $700 each compete with Sails, Blades and Spars. During the last 24 years PYC had acquired through do-nation 2 extra hulls and a large assort-ment of mismatched gear above what we needed to put 16 boats on the water. With about a weeks work we selected the best gear and hulls to keep.

In the end we were able to equip our 16 boats with identical up to date gear. Most of the sold boats went to the Nash-ville Leadership Academy allowing them to add sailing to their Summer Camps. Hopefully the Coronavirus will be under control by June allowing us to have our summer camp. You have probably seen at least 1 of 34 banners put up by our Education Foundation around town. Up until 2 weeks ago enrollment was almost double past years. In any event when the kids start sailing again it will be done in an updated fleet of Optimists. -Steve Sherman

The Privateer Sailing Education Foundation (PSEF, a Non-Profit) was established to provide sailing education at Privateer Yacht Club. It organizes and delivers sailing education for adults and children, as well as the physically chal-lenged. PSEF offers spring and fall classes to take advantage of the most favorable sailing weather in the Chattanooga area. Class size is limited to 8 students. The Adult Learn to Sail class is designed for adults who have never sailed before, or have had lim-ited experience. The course teaches the art of sailing, a sport you can enjoy participating in for your entire life. It includes the following: Safety Rigging and care of a sailboat Nautical terminology Rules of the road Leaving the dock correctly Sailing to windward, leeward, and on a reach Returning to the dock Reading the wind, including direction and velocity Basic knot-tying The course is taught on Lake Chickamauga using the facilities of Privateer Yacht Club, Located in Hixson TN. WANT TO HELP WITH SAIL CAMP? We have a number of part time jobs. One we are still working on is lunches. We are not sure what we want. Last year Nan Brooks took the menu to a new high. Previous to that Mckayla Locke setup a cookbook of simple easy meals with instructions to feed 30 people. We are looking at a few other ideas. Privateer Yacht Club Board of Directors Meeting

Harvey Howalt Regatta Room Monday March 9, 2020

Members present: Harper, Fowler, Clark, Varnell, Graham, Healy, Harwell, Landers Guests: Sherman, Dyer The meeting was called to order by the commodore at 6:00 PM Membership – Eddie Graham

There were no new associate members to intro-duce Ken Taber has served his year as an associate and is up for a vote on family membership. Graham recommends that Taber remain as an asso-ciate for another year, as his activity at club func-tions has been low. (Taber lives in Atlanta). The Board agreed with Graham’s recommendation. Membership levels are as follows: Family – 148, Assoc.-17, Junior – 12, Out-of-Town – 15, Honorary – 6. Secretary – Linda Lind (not present) Vice Commodore Rob Fowler filled in for Linda and asked for approval of the minutes of the last board meeting. The minutes were approved. Treasurer – Gary Harwell Brief discussion of the balance sheet and members who are not current with dues payment. Gary discussed the IRS audit to determine our non-profit exemption status. The results of the audit approved the continuation of that status. Brief discussion of which boats are currently owned by PYC. Motion to approve treasurers report; Board voted to approve as submitted. Commodores Report – Keith Harper Keith would like to thank Eddie Graham for his help with the “hands-on” race committee training conducted by Keith last week. (Assoc. members were given the opportunity to go out on the race committee boat and practice setting up courses and

using the equipment on our pontoon boat). The commodore asked for board approval to loan one of our club Scots to AYC for their disabled sail training day. A motion was made, voted on and ap-proved to allow the loan of the boat. Vice Commodore, Racing – Rob Fowler The annual race committee seminar and all fleets meeting was well attended. Thanks to Brainard Cooper again for his guidance and expertise. The Race Committee schedule has been finalized and will be posted on the web site, in the newsletter and on the bulletin board at the club. Reminders will go out to members approximately one week before their assignment. The annual regatta schedule has been set and is posted on the club calendar on the web site. The St. Patrick’s Day Regatta and dinner is next Saturday, and notices have been placed on the web site. The following Sunday is the last scheduled Frostbite Race. All our active racing fleets have fleet captains ex-cept for the PHRF fleet. Rear Commodore, Tom Clark – House and Grounds

Our annual spring clean-up work party will be on Saturday, March 28th. Work party tasks may be more focused on a few areas of great need instead of gen-eral clean-up. Cleaning out the ditches along the en-try road and de-winterizing the clubhouse will be a priority. Tom may post photos of areas that need work so that members can volunteer to work those areas either at the work party, or at their convenience during the year. One of the projects needed to be accomplished is the construction of new steps/trail from the Jlot down to the south cove. This will be done in order to eliminate the need for the existing long wooden staircase from the road down to the lot. The stairs are in bad shape and can be dangerous in wet weather. Rob Fowler will head up a team to work this problem. The storage container in the J-lot needs to be orga-nized. There was some discussion of the light on the flag-pole, and the possible addition of a photo sensor to turn the light off during the daytime. (Fowler re-ceived an email from Steve Sherman after the

Page 12: Private Ear · 05/27/2020 Wednesday 6:45 Chris Edwards Holly Gregory Dale Jordan 05/30/2020 Saturday 1:00 Bill Bruss Bruce Macphee Stephen Miller 05/31/2020 Sunday 2:30 Corey Blair

meeting stating that the light is an LED fixture with a photo sensor). David Varnell requested that some work party effort go to clean-up of brush along the edges of the upper dinghy storage lot. Tom discussed a request to provide additional privacy curtains in the women’s shower. There was a discussion of past sewer problems at the clubhouse. No new problems have occurred, and it is felt that regular use of the facilities is helpful in keeping the lines from backing up. Brief discussion of the Corona Virus outbreak and proper measures for prevention of the spread of the virus. Carl Dyer (guest in attendance) noted that simple hand washing with soap and water is the simplest and most effective way to stem the spread. Thanks to David Varnell and Eddie Graham for cutting up the fallen trees on the north side of the main harbor. Dockmaster, David Varnell The Impulse 26 berthed on C dock was sinking, but the owner has re-floated it. The owner has also giv-en the boat to PSEF. There was some discussion about how long PYC would allow the boat to remain in its current slip. The trees that had fallen into the mouth of the main harbor have been cleared (D. Varnell and E. Graham). There is an abandoned Flying Scot in the upper lot. Can it be cut up and salvaged for hardware? The mast is bent and no good. Fowler volunteered to contact Flying Scot Inc. to see if they would be will-ing to take it away and re-furbish, re-sell it (at their cost). David has received 50 responses to his request for current insurance on member owned boats. Social Director, Susan Howell (not present) (Report by Fowler) The St Patrick’s day social is set for March 21st. RSVP to Susan Howell before the 15th. Paul Healy has requested use of the clubhouse for private events on Saturday March 14th and Sunday May 3rd. The board voted to approve the use.

Club Boats Director, Paul Healy We are proceeding with re-powering the main race committee boat. Discussion regarding the purchase of another RIB from McLaughlin Boat Works. It was determined by consensus of board members that we only need two RIB’s in our fleet. Discussion of the purchase of a new skiff to replace the aging and waterlogged Carolina Skiff. We are selling the second (newer) pontoon boat as it is mostly unused, and the old Carolina Skiff. Discussion regarding the purchase of a new 50 hp motor.

Looking for a Boston Whaler to replace the Caroli-na Skiff. Past Commodore, Josh Landers Happy Birthday to Pat Crowe!

12 of the existing 18 Optimist Prams will be re-placed by new Opti’s for $8,000. There may be a change of leadership at PSEF. Landers will keep the board informed. Josh is contacting Scott Lee about UTC’s member-ship in PYC and their dues. Old Business B Dock decking status. Currently we are scheduled for the next phase to be installed in August. There was some discussion of trying to get both phases completed at the same time in order to save money. Varnell will investigate this possibility. New Business Proposal to replace the old swim dock ladder with a new aluminum one that extends farther down in the water. Discussion of the possibility of PSEF do-nating the ladder to PYC. Brief discussion of safety equipment required for the swimming dock. Motion to adjourn at 7:00 PM

Respectfully submitted,

Rob Fowler
