leadershipMMA’s Leadership Academy is committed to helping each student tap into her potential to be a positive, powerful, engaging leader.

Students have opportunities each day to demonstrate their leadership skills through strong character and good

decision-making in everyday situations. In addition, students have the opportunity to run for elected positions

where they are able to make a positive impact in their school community: McAuley Scholars, National Honor

Society, Class Officers, Student Government and Mercy Speaks. These organizational offices provide an

opportunity for student officers and committee members to build leadership skills, identify their own values,

foster school spirit, improve communication and learn the elements of successful team building.

Students are also encouraged, through leadership Academy, to find non-traditional roles of leadership

within the walls of MMA as well. There are opportunities to become sports team captains, manage a

fundraiser, start a new club, organize a school event or navigate her own path to leadership – all of

which are vital to the school community. Students create leadership portfolios that become valuable

content for their college and scholarship applications.

from the uclA Graduate school of education and information studies’

2009 report on single-sex schooling and the transition to college:

Based upon their nationwide blind study of female college

freshmen, the UCLA researchers found that girls’ school

alumnae start college with a number of significant

advantages, including:

• 10% more girls’ school graduates rate their confidence

in math and computer abilities high at the start of college

compared to their peers from coed schools.

• Girls’ school alumnae are three times more likely than

their coed school peers to consider pursuing careers

in engineering.

• Girls’ school graduates rate their academic performance,

public speaking, and writing skills more highly than

do coed school alumnae.

• More girls’ school graduates consider college

a stepping stone to graduate school.

• Girls’ school alumnae report they are more likely

to stay informed about politics and participate in

classroom political discussions than do their coed

school peers.
