Mb&FREjOICES ITS MOST MOMENTOUS ANNIVERSARY IN 2015

However, for the most significant anniversary of its decade- long

existence, MB&F turns that one basic assumption on its head.

Rather than expecting to receive, the creative lab has conceived

HMX – “X” as in the Roman numeral for ten – as a thank you to

the Friends who have supported the brand over the last 10 years.

Instead of developing an ultra- complicated, ultra-expensive

anniversary piece – standard practice in the luxury watchmaking

world – MB&F has cut sales margins without sacrificing quality,

offering a true Horological Machine at an unprecedented price.

Paradoxically, creating such a Machine also made HMX one of the

most difficult to develop as MB&F considered, tested and rejected

a plethora of combinations of forms, finishes and details before

being satisfied that everything was “just right”.

Gentlemen, start your enGines!HMX displays bi-directional jumping hours and trailing minutes.

Apparently simple, but it is how and where the time is displayed

that makes HMX so special. Rotating discs on top of the movement

feature mirror image numerals. These are reflected 90° and

magnified by two sapphire crystal optical prisms that “project” the

time onto the front vertical display. Light streaming through the

transparent engine cover both illuminates the top of HMX’s engine

and backlights the time display for high legibility.

Also visible through the sapphire crystal engine cover are

supercar-inspired dual “rocker covers” on top of the movement,

each featuring shiny chrome oil filler caps. These oil caps are

not just pretty design elements, but are fully functional oil caps

that the watchmaker unscrews to oil the jeweled bearings for the

indication discs.

An automatic winding mechanical movement provides HMX with

power, its “fuel” topped up by the 22K gold rotor visible through the

display back.

HMX is a limited edition of 4 x 20 pieces in grade 5 titanium and

stainless steel, available in Lotus Black, British Racing Green, Ferrari

Red and Bugatti Blue.

“a creative adult is a child who survived”The tag line for MB&F’s

10th anniversary is “A

creative adult is a child who

survived”, a reference to

a child’s sense of wonder

and awe that usually fades

under the onslaught of

the everyday realities of

reaching adulthood.

As a child, MB&F founder

Maximilian Büsser dreamt

of becoming a car designer

and his sketchbooks were

full of drawings of the

supercars of his imagination.

The automobile-inspired

HMX is proof positive that

the child in Büsser survived.6

Page 5: Privé magazine (october november 2015 issue]

inspiration and realization10 years is an important

milestone for anyone, but

it is an especially significant

anniversary for a small,

horological creative lab that

persistently bucks trends,

zigs when others zag, and

creates three-dimensional

kinetic Machines rather than

watches. When Maximilian

Büsser founded MB&F in 2005,

he hoped that a few collectors

might be brave enough to

follow him into unexplored

horological territory, but had

no idea just how big a revolution

MB&F would ferment.

“From the beginning, the idea

for HMX was to give something

back to our Friends:

indicationsThe vertical hour and minute

display on HMX are derived

from circular discs rotating flat

on top of the movement. Each

of the two discs (one for the bi-

directional jumping hours, one

for the minutes) is printed with

mirror image numerals that

are reflected and magnified

by two triangular - shaped

optical prisms, reflecting the

time onto the vertical forward

facing display. A gap between

the two prisms allows light to

flood onto the Engine from the

front as well as the top, and

the light coming in from the

top backlights the indications,

making them even more

legible.

the collectors and supporters

who were vital in enabling

MB&F to reach its 10th

anniversary”, says Maximilian

Büsser. “The industry norm

for anniversaries is to develop

ultra-expensive pieces,

but we decided to do the

opposite: HMX is by far our

most affordable Horological

Machine to date and is our way

of saying thank you.”

HMX was nonetheless one of

the most difficult Machines to

develop as MB&F considered,

tested and rejected a plethora

of combinations of forms,

finishes and myriad details

before being satisfied that

everything was “just right”.

The sapphire prisms are

wedge-shaped with the angles

precisely calculated to ensure

that light is reflected from the

horizontal indications to the

vertical rather than refracted

(bent). A convex lens at the front

provides the magnification.

Sapphire crystal is much more

difficult to work to optical

precision than glass and it took

considerable development and

meticulous care in production

to create crystals that reflected

and bent light without the

slightest distortion. The vertical

forward-facing display makes

HMX an excellent driver’s

watch as there is no need to

lift your wrist from the steering

wheel to read the display.

machineAs a child, Maximilian Büsser dreamed of becoming a

designer of supercars and, like many boys before and since,

he filled sketchbooks and notepads with drawings of wild,

super-fast cars. However, unlike the majority, a kernel of

that boy in Büsser remained with him through to adulthood

and with MB&F that kernel has grown and flourished. HMX

is a supercar for the wrist!

Because of its utterly unconventional shape, the HMX case is

a major challenge to manufacture: Every line, curve, metal,

finish and colour has been refined over and over again. The

case options were considered for strength, colour, finish

and even weight: HMX didn’t just have to look good from

every angle, it also had to feel “just right”, i.e. not too heavy

but not too light either. Stainless steel and grade 5 titanium

were finally selected as offering the ideal qualities for the

HMX case.

“Everything that I do now, I want to look back and be proud

of, and I feel this even more strongly than I did 10 years ago”,

says Maximilian Büsser. “I’m not satisfied until I feel that

everything is perfect, so every single little detail counts, and

even more so for an anniversary piece.”

The influences of a number of supercars can be seen in

HMX’s design cues. In particular, the distinctive Superleggera

style of renowned Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring

– creators of automobiles like Alfa Romeo’s Disco Volante –

resonates throughout the “coachwork” of the Machine.

The four colours of HMX are all carefully selected motor

racing colours: Lotus black, for one of the most successful

teams in the history of motor racing; British racing green,

which should originally have been red, white and blue, but

those colours were already taken by the USA; Bugatti blue,

apparently inspired by the colour on Mrs. Bugatti’s Gauloise

cigarette packets; and Ferrari red, which is the Italian official

motor sport color.

Describing the idea behind

dream watch 5, De Bethune’s

latest and highly unorthodox

timepiece, company founder

and designer David Zanetta

offers a simple two-word an-

swer: “the future.” While that

description applies somewhat

to all of the company’s offer-

ings, Zanetta has given his

imagination its greatest free-

dom in the series of Dream

Watches, which often pres-

age important developments

for the company. Some mod-

els have been compared to

spaceships, with their aggres-

sive, angular lines. The flowing

curves of the polished titanium

Dream Watch 5 ($162,000, in a

limited edition of 10), however,

seem to evoke something far

more organic - perhaps, with

the strap unfolded, even a bird.

But nested comfortably under-

neath a shirt cuff, the layout

of the crown and the jumping

disk digital display make them-

selves readable with just the

slightest effort. Such utility sug-

gests De Bethune’s futurism is

not just design fantasy, but cal-

culated evolution as well.

Dream Watch 5

Spurred by the success of HM-

4, the hitherto most eccentric

timepiece in an oeuvre already

know for extremes of design,

Maximilian Büsser of MB&F

has been tempted to venture

still further into uncharted ter-

ritory. With its multiple sap-

phire domes, the sinuously

curved HM-6 ($219,000) shares

the bilateral symmetry of HM-

4, but comes from a different

cultural touchstone shared by

Büsser’s generation - in this

case the spaceship of Captain

Future, a science-fiction char-

acter popularized in late 1970s

anime. MB&F has essentially

fused two titanium “hulls” to-

gether, with the body in be-

tween housing a flying tourbil-

lon movement. The hour and

THE WATCH COLLECTOR’S DREAM

11

minute displays, each mount-

ed transversely in a separate

pod, are matched on the oth-

er side of the watch by a pair

of braking turbines, which

dampen excessive motion in

the winding rotor. A closeable

cupola protects the tourbillon

housing from the debilitating

effects of UV radiation - and

possibly the odd cosmic ray.

The new BR-X1, however,

is its own interpretation of

high watchmaking along the

company’s military - inspired

lines. Taking Bell & Ross’s well-

known square case, the company

rebuilt it into what creative

director Bruno Belamich calls: “A

luxury 4x4.” The modernly styled

movement is from Vallée de

Joux specialist Dubois Depraz,

built with an exclusive X-shaped

upper bridge. The case of the

BR-X1 ($19,500) is a complex

assembly with a base structure

in grade-5 titanium, with an array

of ceramic and rubber inserts

to provide impact and scratch

resistance. A system of toggle

pushers utilizes limited material

flex to provide a soft, buttery

feel for chronograph operation.

LIKE MOST LUXURY WATCHMAKERS, BELL & ROSS HAS MADE ITS SHARE OF TRADITIONAL COMPLICATED WATCHES.

Bell&rossBr-x1

This year’s RM 36-01 Tourbillon

Competition G-Sensor Sébas-

tien Loeb ($625,000) gives this

original complication—one that

completely suits the brand’s

roots in motor racing—its due

place in the spotlight. Beyond

looks, the complication on this

model has been completely re-

designed with a turning bezel

that allows the wearer to fine-

tune the direction of the g-force

to be measured. The reset

pusher, which must be pressed

to record separate g-force max-

imums, is set smack in the mid-

dle of the crystal. Mille’s own

racing experience told him this

was the easiest position to op-

erate the watch with the least

distraction, especially while

wearing gloves.

Steam rising from vast kettles

of Pho, the fragrant noodle

broth that fuels Vietnam, gives

a wavy, hallucinatory edge to

street life in Hanoi. Pavement

cafés are no-frills affairs – a

scatter of plastic stools no higher

than an upturned bucket.

Crouched, knees to chin, you will

do your best to convey noodles,

slippery as elvers, from bowl to

mouth with chopsticks.

A coffin wobbles on the back

of a trishaw. There’s a hawker

staggering under the weight

of a shoulder pole hung with

votives for ancestor worship.

And then, as if choreographed

by Rodgers and Hammerstein,

a blur of moving foamy pink

blossom forms into a phalanx

of school children bearing

peach trees to celebrate the

lunar new year.

“What age are you?” asks the

café proprietor, a grandmother

who stirs soup, semaphores to

customers and ushers children

out of the way in one graceful

movement. Clearly, she thinks

she has a giant baby on her

hands and kindly takes time to

demonstrate the rapid stir-and-

schloop technique required for

safe ingestion of pho.

The scene swirling about in the

Vietnamese capital is so various,

so densely packed with incident,

that it seems the life of five cities

has been squeezed into a single,

jaw-dropping spectacle.

Scooters, impossibly laden

with great cantilevered piles

of produce, choke the narrow

streets in a solid, honking

18

Although it’s just 50 years since

“the American War” brought

Vietnam to its knees, its

recovery has been spectacular.

The liberalising effects

of doi moi, the economic

reforms implemented in

1986 to create a “socialist-

oriented market economy”,

are everywhere apparent.

And while it is a funny kind

of socialism – there is, for

example, no free education

– free-market competition is

joyously embraced. (A shop

front advertising “High Class

Laundry” is trumped by its

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

neighbour: “High, High Class

Laundry”.)

The granite acropolis where

the communist revolutionary

leader Ho Chi Minh has lain in

state since his death in 1969

with Dr Nguyen Huu Ngoc, a

distinguished historian who

fought French colonialists

and American aggressors

alongside “Uncle Ho” and later

became his official translator.

“Ho Chi Minh,” was essentially

a nationalist, a man of the

people. But he didn’t believe

in class struggle. And he would

have hated that mausoleum.”

What Uncle Ho - whose army

marched on flip flops made

from motor tyres - would

make of the queues outside

the Hanoi branches of Gucci

and Christian Louboutin is

anybody’s guess. Vietnam has

effectively transformed from a

centuries-old agrarian economy

to a service-based economy

in the space of a generation.

This rapid social and economic

change – per capita GDP has

doubled in four years – has

created an elite hungry for

luxury. Owners of Bentleys and

BMWs are proud to sit calmly

behind their wheels in the sea

of scooters.

Bridal parties, shiny with

hope and hand-sewn sequins,

arrange themselves for wedding

pictures on the marble steps of

western-style shopping malls.

And, significantly, the new

spirit of openness has sparked

a radical overhaul of tourism;

the lifting of “movement

regulations” in 1997 allowed

visitors to travel freely within

the country and, more recently,

the ministry for tourism has

concentrated investment in the

“lavish sector”.

Once the preserve of gap-

year backpackers and

specialist trips for US Army

“vets”, Vietnam now boasts

five-star hotels and resorts

to rival the most luxurious

destinations in Thailand or

Malaysia. Infrastructure in less

visited parts of the country

is still rudimentary, but a

growing number of bespoke

travel services have opened

up Vietnam’s 1,900 miles of

coastline, unspoiled tropical

jungle and ancient heritage

to a new wave of upmarket

travellers.

Page 11: Privé magazine (october november 2015 issue]

21

China Beach in Danang, capital of the South Central region, was once the preserve of US troops on

R&R. Now it’s planted with parasols and boasts a Colin Montgomerie golf course, a Michel Roux

restaurant (La Maison 1888 at the Intercontinental), and flop-and-relax resorts. Spas offer guests

“VIP suites” and caviar facials. Along the streets, hawkers sell handbags with faux European luxury

labels and price tags that are a fraction of the real things.

Not all of the coastline, thankfully, is as international as Danang. Just 40 minutes’ drive away, in

Quang Nam Province, is a world in which water buffalo pull geometrical plough-lines through lime

green paddies, and where life goes on as it did 100 years ago. Here, at the celebrated Red Bridge

Restaurant, on an inlet of the Thu Bon River, you can join a Vietnamese cookery class. It’s something

of an eye opener to see the skill and dexterity that goes into fashioning the humble spring roll.

Rising, dreamlike, from the

waterlands, the former trading port

of Hoi An was effectively marooned

in the 19th century by the silting of

the Thu Bon River. Now a Unesco

World Heritage Site, the town is a

perfectly preserved architectural

cache of pagodas, temples and

merchant dwellings strung along

the estuary.

Tutors, like Thanh, cuts no corners – you will be required to

make your own rice paper, steaming thin layers of batter on

stretched muslin – but he cheerfully accepts the limitations

of his fumbling students. “One Vietnamese minute,” he

says, tapping his watch, “that would be about two hours in

European time.”

Immaculate shop fronts and pedestrianised streets seem almost Disneyfied after the chaos of

Hanoi. Only yards from the main drag, however, life goes on as it has for centuries. In the 17th-

century Fujian Assembly Hall, a shy couple prays before the goddess of fertility and her 12 midwives.

Traditional meeting houses are filled with the distinctive click and swipe of mah-jong tiles.

Hoi An is famed for its express tailoring and punters are sized up, literally, at a glance. Before you

can say, “Let me think about it”, you are pinned and pleated into shimmering silk. The workmanship

is superb and the finished garment can be collected the same day, although it might be a good idea

to bring along a favourite piece as a template; local style works a flouncy, Eighties vibe.

The South Central Coast’s most secluded and exclusive beach strip is Lang Co, a six-mile curve of

pink-gold sand at the base of the Truong Son mountains. For anyone harbouring a From Here to

Eternity fantasy of rolling surf and misty peaks, this is the place to indulge it.

By mid-afternoon clouds are boiling up the valley like steam from a giant wok; the aptly named Sea

Cloud mountain, slamming around hairpin bends to Hai Van, Vietnam’s highest pass. An immense,

faded billboard showing proletarian heroics and crumbling, bullet-pocked pill boxes are reminders

that this was the official frontier between communist North Vietnam and the American-controlled

South. Ho Chi Minh, always said that ordinary US citizens were opposed to the “American war”.

They seem to believe it.

If the political border between North and South Vietnam has been effaced, cultural differences

remain distinct. Travelling south, the food is hotter, the mindset more laid-back. And the weather

is incomparably better.

Page 12: Privé magazine (october november 2015 issue]

Ninh Thuan Province, the region with the least rainfall and most sunny days in Vietnam, is also

the least developed, but the broad corniche along its spectacular, rugged shoreline suggests it’s

gearing up to be the Vietnamese Riviera. For the moment its wildness is part of the attraction –

jaguars can still be spotted in Nui Chua National Park and green sea turtles appear almost luminous

in the clear waters of the adjoining marine reserve. At Po Klong Garai, a pilgrimage site for the

Cham people, the salt breeze has softened the edges of fantastical sandstone towers. A few miles

down the road, a Buddhist pagoda under construction, where prefabricated concrete dragons

have flashing electric eyes.

In contrast to this hard-hacked region, the Mekong Delta is a kind of tropical Eden, an allegorical

illustration of fecundity. Swapping the river boat for a bike, you can explore a lacework of tributaries

bordered by orchards where unfeasibly large jackfruit hang across my path.

Ho Chi Minh City (old Saigon) is the exclamation mark at the end of an odyssey, a sky-scraping city

crackling with entrepreneurial energy. There are eight million people and four million motorbikes; all

of which, it seems, turn out for the nightly “fast living”, a kind of petrolhead passeggiata, where the

young and the restless zoom round the boulevards, just because they can. Crossing the road feels like

a senseless act of bravado (the trick is to walk out and trust they’ll drive round you; dither and you’re

dead). Far more fun to tour the city on the back of a Vespa.

With a thrilling rev and a small yelp, join the strobing slipstream of red tail lights. Vietnam right now is

having the ride of its life. It’d be a shame to miss the action.

Standard power is a 330-horsepower Volvo Penta D6

Duopropsterndrive engine that produces a cruising speed of

25 knots and a top speed of 26 knots. For a little more oomph,

options include a single 400-horsepower Volvo Penta D6

Duopropsterndrive generating a cruising speed of 30 knots and

a top end of 31 knots; a pair of 170-horsepower Volvo Penta D3

Duopropsterndrives driving a cruising speed of 26 knots and a

top hop of 27 knots; and a pair of 220-horsepower Volvo Penta

D3 Duopropsterndrives that push the hull to a cruise of 30 knots

and top out at 31 knots.

On board are a galley, a seating area and a helm station. A glass

door separates the salon and cockpit and can be opened to

create an uninterrupted gathering space. A refrigerator can be

added in the cockpit, and a sun lounge that converts to a dinette

can be ordered atop the cabin superstructure forward of the

coach roof.

Base price is a little more than $200,000 (€164,950).

The Sealine C330 is a two-cabin design that allows owners to choose equipment, materials and colors to create a personalized boat.

Bill Dixon penned the Sealine 330’s design, attempting to use every inch of onboard space to create the feeling of a larger boat. Oversized hull windows and large hatches allow for extra light and fresh air, and everything from headroom to berth size has been pushed to its limits, according to the builder. A sliding roof opens electrically to create a fully indoor-outdoor space.

With the Project sea hawk superyacht concept, the London-based design firm Hawk Yachts aims to create a superyacht that is not only big in size, but substance as well. the 338-foot yacht concept has been engineered as a true luxury expedition craft, equally comfortable cruising near the polar ice caps or on the amazon river. Its massive interior could accommodate as many as 36 guests and 62 crew.

Designed from what the company calls the “ocean up,” the Sea Hawk will feature an efficiently

hydrodynamic hull with belted reinforcement, large bilge keels, retractable fin stabilizers,

and oversize propellers. But its real beauty is in the bow. Approximately 1.5 decks higher

than standard designs, the unique Hawk bow elevates the gunwale (top edge), and its shape

helps deflect and dampen the force of large waves. Thanks to this geometry, as well as its

construction materials, the yacht will be ready for Polar Ice Class 6 certification and will be able

to cut through ice up to 2.5 feet thick.

In polar opposite conditions, Sea Hawk will take the heat in stride thanks to engine-cooling

systems, powerful air-conditioning, insect and pollen filters, and heat exchangers capable of

handling the high silt content of many tropical rivers. Adding to the yacht’s versatility is the

planned use of a hybrid propulsion system that will allow cruising at speeds of up to 12 knots

using only electricity.

WHY A

CArIbbeAn YACHTHOLIDAY IS MAGICAL!

The Caribbean is definitely known to be the hotspot for a yacht holiday during the months of November through to July. the question is, what makes a yacht charter in the caribbean so special? here is why!

1. The Gustavia Harbor in

St. BartsGustavia, first claimed

by France in 1648, has become

the busiest port in the whole

of the Caribbean. Formerly

the home to trade boats, the

Harbor has now become a

popular pit stop for luxury

yachts. Gustavia is renowned

for its shopping and top-end

boutiques, excellent gourmet

restaurants and a crazy

nightlife. Gustavia Harbor is the

place to be in the Caribbean.

3. Diving in Anegada in BVI

Anegada is the northernmost

of the British Virgin Islands.

Formed from coral and

limestone, it is the prime scuba-

diving location in the Caribbean

and the only uninhabited island

of the BVIs. Anegada is home

to the largest barrier coral reef

in the whole of the Caribbean,

better known as Horseshoe

Reef. The reef is over 18 miles

in length, has an abundance of

marine life as well as hundreds

2. Yachting Events in

Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua

Located in the English Harbor,

Nelson’s Dockyard is a preserved

cultural heritage site in Antigua,

one of the most famous of the

West Indies islands. Whether you

prefer classic ketches, sloops,

schooners and Tall Ships, or

faster, racier boats, these events

are sure make quite a sailing

spectacle. Of course all this is

complemented by the world-

renowned Antiguan hospitality.

White-Sand beaches of the

British Virgin Islands (BVI) Located

on the East side of Puerto Rico,

the British Virgin Islands are

known to be one of the world’s

top sailing yacht destinations. As

well as deserted beautiful white

sand beaches there are plenty of

anchorages, making travelling by

yacht an easier way to visit the

less accessible islands. If you’re

a fan of yachting events, do not

miss the Spring Regatta, which is

a seven-day sailing yacht race.

of shipwrecks. Even though

anchoring is now illegal on

Horseshoe Reef, it is definitely

worth a visit.

4. Hiking in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe is a group of

islands situated the Leeward

Islands in the Lesser Antillies.

Moor your luxury superyacht

in the port and explore the

islands for yourself. Go diving

in some of the islands most

stunning waters, especially

Pain du Sucre. If you are really

adventurous, why not hike

to the famous La Soufriere,

Guadeloupe’s most famous

active volcano (don’t worry,

it hasn’t erupted in years!).

The views from the volcano

are absolutely breath taking,

excellent photo opportunities

await.

4140

Page 22: Privé magazine (october november 2015 issue]

5. Kitts Another of the

Leeward Islands, St Kitts is

bursting with history and

culture. Having a surface area

of only 168 square meters,

it is home to a population

of approximately 35,000

people. St Kitts is best known

for Brimstone Hill Fortress

National Park, which is home

to the largest fortress ever

built in the Eastern Caribbean.

Climb up to the fortress, and

then spend the rest of the day

relaxing in Basseterre Bay, the

ultimate location to anchor

your superyacht.

6. A Sunset in St. Lucia

Named after Saint Lucy of

Syracuse by the French in

1660, the volcanic island of St

Lucia is part of the Windward

Islands. Cruise over to Marigot

Bay on your yacht and admire

the stunning rainforests and

greenery. In the early evening

head out to sea and wait for

the sun to set; it will be the

most romantic view you will

witness in your lifetime. With

the Caribbean made up of

so many islands, there is an

abundance of fantastic things

to do and see to make your

yacht holiday rock! If you are

looking to cruise the Caribbean,

chartering a superyacht gives

you the opportunity to discover

the best the region has to offer.

THe COnTeMPOrArY ArT MuSeuM Opens inLOS ANGELES

46

On a blazing-hot September day, hundreds of media

outlets from around the globe gathered in downtown Los

Angeles to be the first to experience Edye and Eli Broad’s

extensive contemporary art collection at its new home

- the Broad museum, which opened to the public Sunday

with free admission. With the 120.000 square-foot museum

at his back, ts matte-white exterior, porous and sponge-

like, establishing a brilliant contrast to Frank Gehry’s shiny

and smooth Walt Disney Concert Hall directly to the north

- Eli addressed the crowd, declaring Los Angeles the “new

contemporary art capital of the world.”

With the Broad displaying some

2,000 works by more than

200 artists (including such L.A.

legendaries as Ed Ruscha, Lari

Pittman, and Mark Bradford)

and the 29-year-old Museum

of Contemporary Art (MOCA)

located just across the street—a

new walking bridge connecting

the two—anyone will be hard-

pressed to disagree with Eli

Broad’s proclamation. The $140

million museum is not only a

new way for Eli and Edye to share

their collection with the masses

- a passion that is as near to

their hearts as the art itself—the

Broad is also part of Eli’s larger

plan to urbanize downtown L.A.

and, in the process, make the

47

sprawling Southern California

city an internationally respected

epicenter for art and culture. In

this spirit, MOCA, now a partner

of the Broad, has decided to

give a free one-year MOCA

membership to the Broad

visitors for its first few weeks.

Mayor Eric Garcetti also shares

the vision, proudly boasting that

“[L.A.] is the right home for this

museum,” inviting everyone to

explore and truly “get into the

guts of the building.”

Page 25: Privé magazine (october november 2015 issue]

The collection includes 125 photographs by Cindy Sherman (the

largest single collection of her work), 34 works by Roy Lichenstein,

and 19 pieces by CyTwombly (a popular third-floor exhibition on

press day). Other highlights included Robert Therrien’s over 10-foot-

tall Under the Table installation; Yayoi Kusama’sInfinity Mirrored

Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away, a small chamber

of multicolored LED lights, mirrors, and water that each person

experiences individually for 35 seconds; and a nine-screen video

installation, The Visitors, by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, who

filmed nine different performers in one house in upstate New York

simultaneously in one take.

There is also more to come, such as works by Jordan Wolfson and Alex

Israel. And the collection will continue to grow under the guidance of

Joanne Heyler, the founding director of the Broad and the visionary

curating the couple’s collection for the past two decades. In the past,

the collection grew at a rate of one new piece of art a week, but “we

are not going to continue at that pace,” explains Eli. “When you start

you don’t have hardly anything, and then as it happened it averaged

out that way.”

And there is plenty to explore. The Broad’s collection has been seen in fragments through the couple’s 31-year-old Broad Art Foundation, which has facilitated 8,000 loans to 500 museums and galleries across the world, but never this comprehensively.

Charles Carroll wore many hats during his lifetime, including

planter, writer, and congressional delegate. But he is best known

as one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.

In addition to playing a pivotal role in the country’s fight for

independence, Carroll was a wealthy landholder who owned

thousands of acres in the Maryland countryside. Some of that

land was eventually purchased by the owners of Baltimore’s

Pimlico Race Course, who built an English-style manor on the

De PurY’S INAUGURAL AUCTION

The last time Baroness Lambert, an art collector and the wife

of a prominent Belgian banker, teamed up with auctioneer

Simon de Pury, for a photography sale in 2004, all lots sold

for a total well above the high estimate, and nine records

were set. One of those was for the artist Barbara Kruger,

whose billboard-size Untitled (I Shop Therefore I Am) sold

for $601,600, more than five times its presale estimate. This

fall, the baroness is once again putting impressive treasures

in the hands of de Pury with a visual odyssey: selections from lac (the lambert art collection). The sale of more

than 300 items features contemporary pieces - with works

by Cindy Sherman, Christopher Wool, and André Dubreuil -

and antiques spanning the 18th and 19th centuries.

The sale is also the inaugural undertaking of de Pury’s latest business, a new online auction

venture called de Pury. Formed in partnership with antiques dealer Mallett, the company

will hold the sale in association with Christie’s onOctober 14 in London. The auction will be

streamed live, with bidders able to join in online or from Christie’s auction house on King

Street. From October 3 to 14, prospective buyers and curious spectators alike will be able

to glimpse the contents of A Visual Odyssey, which will be displayed at Ely House - a historic

home built in the 18th century for the Bishop of Ely - in an exhibit curated by the French

designer Jacques Grange.

THE WONDERFULMERCEDES-BENzCOnCePT IAA

The Mercedes-Benz “Concept

IAA” unveiled at this year’s

Frankfurt auto show actually

morphs from an average

commuter to an air-slicing, high-

speed racer in seconds. Dubbed

the Intelligent Aerodynamic

Automobile, the IAA (which

shares the same acronym as

that used in the Frankfurt show’s

official name) is, according

to Mercedes-Benz, a glimpse

of what a future four-door

business sedan might look like.

The “Concept IAA” is powered

by a plug-in hybrid power

train rated at 279 hp, with an

electronically limited top speed

of about 155 mph.

But the car’s real draw is its

revolutionary ability to become

more aerodynamic at higher

speeds. Above 50 mph (or

manually at the touch of a

button), the IAA activates front

flaps, a front splitter, and a tail

that extends more than 15 inches

to achieve an extraordinarily low

coefficient of drag only 0.19.

By comparison, the most

aerodynamic model of the

current-generation Mercedes

Benz CLA-Class achieves 0.22 Cd,

while the Tesla Model S manages

only 0.24. The wheels, which

Mercedes-Benz calls Active

Rims, have a deep, colander-

like shape at rest, but alter their

cupping, or flatten, from 55

millimeters (about 2 inches) to

zero by centrifugal force as the

car gains speed.

71

The concept’s electronics are also unlike anything currently found

on road cars. Instead of door handles, the IAA uses touchpads

that can open doors with the tap of a finger. Cameras housed in

the side air outlets replace exterior mirrors, projecting images

onto the rearview mirror.

Car-to-X technology enables the dashboard to communicate

with other connected objects nearby (such as oncoming vehicles

or traffic lights), in order to help detect potential hazards before

they are visible to the driver.

Mercedes-Benz says the

“Concept IAA” is only a study for

now, although some speculate

that the car’s styling, which

looks like a futuristic long-tailed

Le Mans racecar, foreshadows

the design language of future

production models, including

the CLA-Class, which already

employs a sleek, coupe-like

roofline on a four-door body.

J A M E S BOND’S AstOn MArtinDB10 supercAr

When James Bond chases the bad guys in Spectre, the 24th film

in the famed spy franchise, he will be doing so while driving an

Aston Martin DB10—the only car ever built just for Bond. While

celebrating the 50-year relationship between the British marque

and Eon Productions (the company responsible for almost all

of the films) last September, work was already underway on a

singular set of wheels for the latest installment. The acclaimed

automaker worked closely with Spectre’s director Sam Mendes to

develop a vehicle with the right balance of power, performance,

and photogenic appeal. Nearly as unique as Agent 007 himself,

only 10 examples of the car were made—each used exclusively

for filming.

Not standard MI6 issue, the DB10 would leave M floored, as it

can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed

of 190 mph, thanks to a 4.7-liter V-8 engine mated to a manual

gearbox. With a faster maximum speed and a nearly equal

acceleration rate as Aston Martin’s DB9, the DB10 has a more

streamlined body style, slightly smaller dimensions, and weighs

several hundred pounds less than its production predecessor.

The DB10 marks the sixth Aston Martin model to be featured in

a Bond film, the first being the DB5 driven by Sean Connery as

the lead role in 1964’s Goldfinger. The company would go on to

provide the ride for 12 of Bond’s adventures to date - more than

any other marque.

Unlike Aston Martin’s

commemorative production

car, the DB9 GT Bond

Edition (released earlier

this month), the DB10 will

not go into production.

One of the cars used in

filming, however, will be

auctioned for charity at a

yet-to-be-determined date.

Spectre opens in theaters

throughout the United

Kingdom on October 26,

followed by a global release

on November 6.

Emirates continues to offer private jet services promising “unsurpassed luxury” for

affluenttravelers. The initial launch of this service a few years back was in response to

increasing demand from markets in the Middle East, Europe, India, Russia and China,

says the carrier.

The specs are impressive and nothing less than what would be expected of a service created to

cater to the world’s obscenely wealthy. The reconfigured Airbus A319 includes, for instance, 10

private suites that slide fully shut, fully lie-flat beds and 32-inch flat screen TVs.

A large shower and spa features heated floors, marble accents, all-natural skincare products and

luxury toiletries from Bulgari.

The main salon can likewise be configured to guests’ needs, be it as a business center for

videoconferencing and high-powered meetings, or as a comfortable living space courtesy of the

mechanically-activated table, two 42-inch LCD screens, and two sofas.

Other amenities include 1,500 channels of on-demand

entertainment, high-speed internet and mobile phone

connectivity, and an in-flight menu that offers guests a

fine dining experience at up to 35,000 feet in the air.

The luxury jet can accommodate up to 19 guests. The

private charter service flies to most locations worldwide,

and extends beyond the carrier’s network.
