We would like to congratulate our pupils, staff, and parents for yet another year of examination success. St John’s College is celebrating being top school for A-level results in Wales over fifteen years, and in November 2014 the college was listed again as the top performing school in Wales in The Sunday Times “Parent Power”. Full details of the school’s outstanding inspection report are available from the ESTYN website and from www.stjohnscollegecardiff.com. This year’s university applications have very strong representation across all our A-level subjects, as well as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, law, law in combination with European languages, architecture, business, history of art, optometry, biomedical sciences, management, accounting and finance, engineering, and natural sciences.

The School continues to flourish in sport, and particular recent highlights include the Tennis team’s victories at the UK Tennis Championships, obtaining ninth position in the whole of the UK at senior level. Our teams continue to achieve excellence in an impressive range of sports throughout the year, and following the success of this year’s netball, hockey and football tour to Malaga, our next international sports tour will be a ski trip to Austria.

Our pupils have achieved outstanding results in Maths Challenges, and our Formula One in Schools Team were awarded second fastest car and third in the Regional Finals at Swansea University. Our Engineering Club were prize winners at Cardiff University in recent weeks, and the College has also come to public attention for its remarkable success in a wide range of extracurricular activities. Our Debating Society represented Wales in UK finals earlier this year, and achieved a double victory in the Cambridge Union Debating Competition in November 2014.

It has also been another magnificent year of music making at St John’s College. Our pupils performed Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore in the summer, and in recent months the Concert Orchestra received standing ovations following performances of the first movement of Rachmaninov Second Piano Concerto at Christ Church Cathedral Oxford and at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The Cathedral Choir gave two concerts at St David’s Hall, including Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 with period ensemble, and the choir was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 to an audience estimated at 1.8 million. In late July, our younger cathedral choristers sang Vivaldi Gloria in two of Belgium’s finest cathedrals, and received a standing ovation following their concert at Bruges Cathedral. The same choristers also collaborated with the renowned Philadelphia Boys Choir (USA) in concert at Hoddinott Hall. In the last six weeks, our senior choristers have performed in the magnificent basilica at El Escorial, and received standing ovations in Iglesia de San Manuel y San Benito in Madrid. In the coming months, the choristers will be singing at St David’s Hall, Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral, London.
