Now as never before, attention is being directed to care of our elder and disabled citizens and greater attention also is directed to the workers who provide hands-on-care and caring.

The 35th annual National Nursing Assistants’ Week provides a timely opportunity to foster and showcase the wonderful things that can happen for residents and workers when we join together in planning your special week, “Nursing Assistants @ the Heart of Care.”

National Network of Career Nursing Assistants, we know you are busy; promoting recognition, education, research, advocacy and peer support development for nursing assistants in nursing homes and other long-term care settings.

Who are you to refer to us, As “Only” a CNA?We’re the ones who wash and dress, Our patients for the day. We’re the ones who take the time, To listen to them speak. We listen about their lifetime, In a forty hour week.We also give our hands to hold, When someone’s feeling scared. It’s not easy being a patient, You’re never quite prepared. We take the time to listen, By lending both our ears.We listen to their worries, Or how they’ve spent their years. Our arms were made to reach, And even wrap around. To give our patients hugs, When they’re feeling a little down.We help our patients do the things, They used to do on their own.Everybody needs some help, Even when we’re grown. So who are you to refer to us, As “only” a CNA?We do our best to meet their needs, Within our working day.We chose to do this job, The job did not choose us.We sympathize and empathize, Compassion is a must.We try to keep them comfortable, And free of any fear.We sit along beside them, When that time is near.We hold their hand, stroke their hair, Just making sure they know. They’re not alone, an aide is there, It’s ok for them to go.To all the CNAs keep your head held high,We’re not “only” CNAs. WE’RE ANGELS IN DISGUISE!

Dawn Mazzola is a certified nursing assistant at a nursing/rehab facility. She finds working with the elderly to be a very rewarding job, yet

sometimes she feels her job goes overlooked. One day after a long shift, she came home and wrote this poem about being a CNA.

All About Compact States...In past Nurses PRN blogs, we’ve talked about the benefits and the fun one can have as a traveling nurse. You can trav-el to new and interesting places, meet new and interesting people, and gain new skills that you may not have other-wise learned. Being a traveling nurse just got even easier because of the NLC or Nurse Licensure Compact. We have written up an FAQ that talks more in depth about compact states; who is eligible, and other answers to questions that you may have. You can find that FAQ here: http://prnhealthservices.com/travel-compact-state-faqs.php.

Have you considered investing in your future? July 1, 2013 is the open enrollment deadline for the employees of Nurses PRN 401(k) Plan who previously qualified as eligible or are newly eligible. For most people, investing in a company retirement plan is the smartest and easiest way to save for the future. Retirement plans are designed to provide you with a convenient way to save for retirement. Your contributions to your 401(k) plan are made on a pre-tax basis and are conveniently deducted from each paycheck. You can choose from a variety of investment options from John Hancock Investment to create your own custom investment portfolio.

Open enrollment occurs twice a year on January 1 and July 1. To be eligible to enroll you must have been employed with Nurses PRN for at least 6 months prior to the immediate open enrollment date and have worked a minimum of 500 hours in your first 6 months of employment or have been employed with Nurses PRN and have worked 1000 hours within a calendar year. All eligible participants will be receiving enrollment information from Human Resources, so please watch your email and mail. If you would like to learn more about our 401(k) Plan, please contact HR at 888-830-8811.

So what is exactly wrong with buying a cheap shoe that just fits ok? The problem is that an ill-fitting shoe not only affects your feet, but they affect your hips and back as well. As nurses, we’re on our feet for hours at a time and the last thing we need to worry about is our feet, hips, back, or any combination of the three hurting. We need to take care of our patients with a smile on our face, and it’s hard to do that while in pain. So without further ado here are some tips I’ve picked up over the years about buying the proper shoe.

Measure your feet. No matter your age it’s very important to measure your feet as the size of your feet can change over your lifetime. It’s also important to measure both feet because for many people they are not the same. If one is larger, buy the shoe in that size. Also, as we stand throughout the day our feet swell, so it’s a good idea to measure your feet at the end of day. By doing this you ensure you get a shoe that will fit even at the end of day, not just in the morning... continue reading at http://www.prnhealthservices.com/my-prn/Finding-Your-Perfect-Nursing-Shoe-is-it-science/187
