Clue by Clue is a collection of thirty-one short mysteries that make great conversation class activities, warm-up activities, fillers, or even time-killers for those last few minutes of class. They can also be used to introduce units on crime or the justice system. They are designed to encourage discussion, and the challenge of solving the mystery as students proceed through a series of clues also requires critical thinking skills. The activities are appropriate for students from upper elementary school to adult, either native speakers or intermediate-level English language learners.

Verdicts promotes critical thinking and reading. Discussion of the cases opens up many questions relating to today’s culture and the rule of law. Students from middle school to adult find it exciting to express their personal opinions and feelings on a great variety of real-world issues. Like members of a jury, naturally they expect their judgement, their serious consideration of challenging cases, to be taken seriously. Because there is never a simple right answer, these fascinating cases and the actual verdicts of the court given at the back of the book provoke lively discussions.

Using the vocabulary worksheet for each case, learners prepare for reading and discussion. They explore the vocabulary and concepts having to do with many real-life situations. These often involve family and community relationships, personal responsibility and liability, the courts, and cultural issues relating to justice and the law.

Two Photocopyable Conversation ActivitiesThe “Crime and Punishment” Books

Each mystery is formatted as a two-page activity. One page is for the teacher, with astatement of the mystery situation, hints, the solution, and follow-up discussion questions; the other page is photocopyable, with the statement of the mystery situation and clue cards to give the students, clue by clue.

Conversation InspirationsOver 2400 conversation topics 3rd Edition The topics range all the way from the universal – human nature and interpersonal relationships – to the culturally vital – cutting edge issues in North American society and how people from other cultures feel about them and deal with them. Whether you want to choose topics for your class that are fun or provocative, that build an understanding of U.S. culture in today’s world, or that help them with their personal adjustment, you’ll find this book invaluable.

Ask and TaskQuestions and Activitiesfor Communication Practice

1400 communication prompts on topics ranging from Advertising and Animals to Weather/Climate and Work

This book is divided into two parts: Questions and Tasks (activities and projects). There are 40 topics with two or four pages of Questions and one page of Tasks for each topic. All the material is presented as sheets of photocopyable cards. The material is intended for use with English language learners at the intermediate proficiency level, and it is best used with high school and adult groups. With some adaptation, however, the book can also be used with middle school students or with any group who want conversation practice.

Both the questions and the tasks can be used in a wide variety of ways to facilitate learning. The questions are to prompt thought and conversation; the tasks are to promote language use while accomplishing some kind of task. You can use these cards cold, first going over the meaning of the question and any new vocabulary, or you can discuss each card to gauge the level of the students’ ability to respond. Alternatively, you can introduce the topics using a separate related reading for each; this will help the students focus on the topic and give the students background to help form an opinion or carry out a task. You will find different ways to use this book based on your own approach to teaching and your students’ needs.

How does the book work? Photocopy a page or two. Choose 3 to 5 topics to offer to your students. Cut them out and paste them on index cards. Then let your students choose what inspires them. Giving them a choice motivates them to talk. • There are 8 different conversation activities: talks, interviews, role plays, chain stories and other group activities, and discussions. Procedures for each activity are clearly laid out. These include the use of topic cards, monitoring, correction techniques, and game rituals that make each conversation class effective as well as enjoyable.

Two NEW stories of today’s refugees

For today’s turbulent world, here are 12 powerfulhistorical novels on the hopes and dreams of

immigrants who have come to the United States, the difficulties they faced, and their success in the U.S.

Stories of 20th century newcomers to America

The hopes and dreams of the characters in these twelve stories are a reflection of the hopes and dreams of virtually every group of people who have ventured from their native lands for a new life in America.

Adult immigrants will have no difficulty identifying with people in the stories. • Public School children (native and newcomer) will feel history come alive • Any struggling reader of English will experience progress and enjoyment in reading successfully. Most of the words beyond the 600-word level have been glossed in the back of the book, allowing readers to read more comfortably, without constant reference to a dictionary.

Audio: Dramatic recordings of these books are available. They help students to pick up American English pronunciation, to hear the suprasegmental system of stress, intonation, rhythm, linking, and phasing (the music of the language), whether they read along with the audio or enjoy following the story, using the recordings as audio books.

☛ Language Skills. Each reading is followed by three exercises that, in effect, bring the reader back for another look at the reading. The first exercise asks the reader to use vocabulary from the reading in a different context to explore the meaning and usage of the word. The second exercise asks the reader to use basic reading skills to comprehend the passage. The third exercise focuses on grammar used in the reading. Visit www.ProLinguaAssociates.com for detail on the grammar introduced in each book.☛ Listening Practice. An audio CD of the 40 readings is available for each book.

☛ Short and Easy. The 160 readings in the series are brief, as the titles indicate, going from an average of 50 words per passage to 125. For the launched beginner, they are accessible and comprehensible, using only 600 different words in Read 50, 900 in Read 125.☛ A Variety of Forms. The passages are not just prose paragraphs. They include many forms of the written language that a learner needs to deal with – graphs, charts, maps, timetables, receipts, emails, blogs, posters, as well as journals, recipes, and bio-sketches. In short, the passages are a reflection of the reading that we all do every day. ☛ Our Global Village. The passages also invite the reader to explore the global village we all live in. For example, Book One begins with a brief trip on the Amazon; then takes us to Mount Fuji, south to the Great Barrier Reef; then to New York City, the Iditarod in Alaska, London, and the Calgary Stampede in Canada.

The first unit uses just under 100 words in short, simple sentences. The opening conversation uses 30 different words, and the central reading passage has a total of 50 words. By the time the learners arrive at their final destination, Washington, DC, they have used over 300 new words, and the final reading passage is 174 words long. The units follow this plan: 1. Questions/conversation about a colorful postcard: What is this? 2. Listening to a phone call with Igor, the traveler. 3. A reading passage describing the famous place. 4. Six short exercises on grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension, and writing (a short dictation). 5. Writing a postcard. 6. A chant practicing pronunciation. 7. Discussion questions. 8. An Internet activity.

Where in the World ...Read, Write, Speak, and ListenWhere in the World is a low-level multi-skills text. English language learners improve their language (reading, listening, conversation) and geography skills (the text touches down in 30 high-interest places around the world). As the “Where” in the title implies, the linguistic content emphasizes WH questions.

Earth MattersThe purpose of these texts is to focus the reader’s attention on the environment,in additon to building all the basic language skills. They are suitable for 5th grade to adult learners at a 4th-grade reading level.

Our Living Planet, the Introductory Text, presents key vocabulary and basic concepts of physical geography and also attempts to instill in the learners an appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the Earth. The book brings attention to some of the environmental problems that face current and future generations.

Going Green focuses on contemporary threats to the environment and the steps each individual can take to reduce climate change and environmental degradation, even if the steps seem small and unimportant. Issues include air pollution, trash disposal, the overuse of water bottles, buying locally, and electricity consumption.

There are ten units in each book. They begin with an illustration and questions that can be used to introduce the content of the unit and to activate the learner’s thinkingabout the theme. Key vocabulary is studied on the second page. Next, a reading introduces key concepts and issues and uses the vocabulary that was introduced on the previous page. The readings increase in length and grammatical complexity. After a comprehension check, a grammar or vocabulary exercise, and a dictation, a short listening and performing activity continues exploring the theme of the unit in the context of an everyday conversation. The units in Our Living Planet end with a writing assignment and homework; the Going Green units end with a variety of class and home activities and suggested internet research.

The audio CD for each text features listening to a reading passage, a dictation, and a dialogue for each of the ten lessons.

Environmental Vocabulary Games and Other Activites supplements both textbooks in the Earth Matters series. This photocopyable resource works with the concepts, vocabulary, and information in the texts. There are materials for matching games, bingo, line-up, vocabulary cards, crosswords, and quiz cards.

Writing 13

The writing activities in Write Choices are designed for ELLs and native-English-speaking children in traditional classrooms or in independent study and tutorials. The 32 units (a total of 64 writing activities) are autonomous and may be used in any order that fits the class curriculum. Each unit is composed of two facing pages with the same title but different writing prompts and assignments. In most cases the first activity is less demanding than the second. The second invites a more complex and creative response. A drawing box, which can be colored, begins each lesson.

The teacher assigns a single unit for everyone and then allows each child to choose one of the two activities. When children have choices, they find it easier to gather their thoughts and feel an important part of the writing process. They can write at their individual level of competence. In using this book, your students will work towards Common Core Anchor Standard 3. They should be able to “write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.”

The drawing box beginning each lesson is a warm-up art activity, with clear concise directions, to prepare students for writing. The teacher may decide to encourage coloring. To assist reluctant writers, writing ideas are suggested in a small box on each page. The bottom half of each page is for writing.

There are five parts to each unit. • In Part One, by reading a script or using a CD, the teacher provides initial oral input modeling a written passage as the students listen. The students then choose a topic for their composition and write a first draft. • In Part Two, by doing a series of exercises, the students use supporting details to develop their ideas for the first draft. • In Part Three, by doing individual and group activities, the students focus on the structure and style of their sentences. During Parts Two and Three, the teacher has time to monitor and assist the students individually. • In Part Four, after listening to another model composition, the students write a final draft.• In Part Five, the students read passages adapted from newspaper stories and other original sources. Then through discussions, study guides, and quizzes, the students paraphrase the content of the passages, an important skill that leads them to finding their own voice as writers.

Similar in approach to David and Peggy Kehe’s Writing Strategies, this book uses entertaining student-centered activities to lead the low-intermediate learner inductively to better writing.

The five units of Write after Input guide students from constructing a single paragraph in Unit One, to two and more paragraphs Units 2-4, and finally, to a five-paragraph composition in Unit 5. A Teacher’s Guide and Answer Key supports the text with photocopyable material.

The new second editions of Book 1 and 2 have been extensively rewritten and expanded, adding a 5th essay type: Expository Essay with a Source.

Essays. The students follow a careful sequence of steps from preparing the first draft to writing the final essay. Advanced Essays: Process, Cause and Effect, Extended Definition, Argumentation, Essay with a Source and Mixed Mode Essay.

Fluency Writing. In pairs and triads, the students exchange information on contemporary topics. They finish the activity by summarizing in writing what they have talked about.

Conversation Strategies 3rd edition29 Pair and Group ActivitiesWhat are Conversation Strategies? Techniques native speakers use to keep control of a conversation, and help the speaker and the listener keep a conversation going.

Discussion Strategies 2nd editionBeyond Everyday Conversation ~ A higher level Conversation Strategies Discussion Strategies prepares students for serious discussions. To make it fun to use and teach, each activity is based on one or more high-interest articles taken from newspapers or magazines – high-interest discussion topics. • 38 activities provide work in real discussion formats – in triads, in small and large groups, and with the whole class. No in-depth background knowledge is needed. Each unit builds on and recycles previous strategies. Clear step-by-step practice of 13 skills – • using rejoinders, • asking follow-up questions, • seeking/giving clarification, • using comprehension checks, • soliciting and using details, • interrupting, • expressing opinions, • volunteering answers, • referring to information and opinion sources, • helping discussion leaders, and • leading a discussion.

To develop strategic competence, students learn the words, phrases, and conventions used by native speakers to get more information, make comparisons, correct someone politely, agree and disagree, summarize, share information, and make decisions in a business meeting. Students practice polite forms, rejoinders, clarifications, follow-up ques tions, getting a response, expressing probability, and avoiding conversation killers. Each activity has three parts: a teacher’s introduction, a written introductory exercise to be done by students individually, and pair/group practice that makes use of information gap and other interactive formats. Each fun, student-centered activity begins with controlled language and moves to open, imaginative talk. Conversation Strategies is easy to use in any intermediate-level class.

Basic Conversation Strategies The learners are introduced to a strategy, such as asking for clarification or showing understanding. In pairs, they practice the strategy in controlled activities, and finally they put the strategy to use in activities such as role plays. Although similar to intermediate-level Conversation Strategies, there is one significant difference: Basic Conversation Strategies has an important listening component. Conversation is, after all, not just speaking; it also involves listening, and part of the approach in this book includes training the learners to be good listeners.

There are three components to this material, the Student Workbook, two CDs (67 listening exercises), and the Teacher’s Edition (contains the entire Student Workbook, the complete scripts of the listening input, plus teaching notes and suggestions, and feedback and evaluation forms).

16 Academic/Cultural/Business

Cultural Differences, a content-based college/university preparation course introducing and giving practice in using a wide range of academic skills. It is of value to English language learners and native speakers who are or will be living in a culturally diverse environment and community.

The content is focused on a neglected area of language-culture studies: the confusion, misunderstandings, misconceptions, and sometimes even hostilities that can occur when learners don’t really understand each other’s language and culture.

Cultural Differences was written for high-intermediate and advanced learners of English, as well as for adults and young adults who are not language learners but who associate with people from other cultures – for example, when Americans of different ethnic/cultural backgrounds study, work, or live together.

Another distinctive feature of Cultural Differences is that it is actually two books, the Basic Text and the photocopyable Supplementary Activities. The Basic Text can be used alone. Using the two books together provides a more challenging program, since the supplementary photocopyable materials involve the learner in a deeper exploration of how and why people from collectivist and individualist cultures differ.

Business Communication Strategies in the International Business World Scott Smith’s business book teaches the vital everyday language typically used in all aspects of running a business, from being comfortable with small talk to effective teamwork on business plans and marketing strategies. Essentially, the goal of Scott’s book is good communication, the context is the world of international business, and the result is successful business people – good communicators.

I-A

There are 24 units, each focused on communication strategies (skills) that business people need. The text also covers writing résumés, interviewing, emailing, and communicating off the job while traveling. Two audio CDs feature native-speakers. A photocopyable Teacher’s Handbook includes teaching tips, complete scripts of the dialogues, answers to the sequencing and matching exercises, and a section of “vocabulary cards” – eighteen 12-card pages of business-related terms that can be cut up for practicing over 200 business terms that are used throughout the text.

What’s Ahead? Transitioning from Adult Education to a Career. This book is for the intermediate to advanced ELL or Adult Education student who is considering pursuing a career after leaving an English language or GED program. It explores six careers where job growth is expected in the 21st century: Health, Skilled Trades, Your own business, Computer Technology, Hospitality and Food Service, Day Care and Education. Readings, discussions, and tasks clarify student skills, needs, and interests. 160 important words are taught for each field. There is a photocopyable Teacher’s Supplement with a Job Board, the EFF Readiness Profile, and additional readings.

People at Work Based on recorded interviews with 10 real working people, this is an innovative whole-language ESL/EFL program for adults (high school and up) interested in cultural issues in the American workplace. Units include discussion and out-of-class projects.

Pronunciation PracticeThe Sounds of North American EnglishPronunciation Practice is a photocopyable workbook with audio CDs for students of English as a second or foreign language (ELLs) whenever they need to practice their pronunciation. This may be when they are high-beginning students who need to get the right start on pronunciation in the early stages of learning English. Or it may be when they are intermediate or advanced students wanting to improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and perfect their North American accent.Pronunciation Practice, being photocopyable, serves as a teacher resource. Specific lessons may be selected for use by individuals or a class. It can also be used by individual students working alone or with a partner.

B-A

Contents in brief: • 70 Basic Lessons with 3 audio CDs • Appendix I: Ten expansion activities• Appendix II: Twenty-four Contrasting Pairs pages, each with 4 interactive listening activities; there are 2 audio CDs to use with Appendix II. • Appendix III: Syllable Stress Flash Cards • Glossary of pronunciation terms

The 70 basic lessons each present and practice one of the distinct sounds of North American English. The first, listen-and-repeat part of the lesson is a list of words demonstrating that sound in initial, medial, and final positions. The second part of each basic lesson is a conversation that uses the vocabulary from the first part. These conversations include all the features of genuine connected speech. Therefore, the student has the opportunity to listen to and practice the individual sounds and the musical patterns of sentences (intonation and rhythm), the connections between words in a sentence (blending and linking), and the idiomatic shortcuts (reductions) of authentic North American speech.

Teaching North American English Pronunciation This book is for the person who is helping a learner of North American English develop and improve their pronunciation. Part One introduces the basics of English phonology for teacher training, with reference to the writing system that represents it. Part Two is a collection of photocopyable handouts that can be used to help English language learners of all ages from high beginning to advanced proficiency. For the teacher, the two parts of the book can be a “Teach as you learn, learn as you teach” professional development experience in a face-to-face classroom context with learners. Or the book can be used as a self-study course. The latter learning experience will definitely be enhanced by using the three audio CDs.

The rhymes progress from shorter and easier rhymes, focused on questions, places, and time, to longer and lexically more challenging rhymes on topics such as color, clothing, the body, occupations, and food.Pronunciation skills. The rhyming can be used to reinforce work on vowel sounds. The very regular rhythmic lines are an excellent way of working on the stress, rhythm, and intonation of English, along with the accompanying reduction, linking, and assimilation of individual sounds.

AllRhymes ‘n Rhythms Photocopyable Read them aloud or chant them as a chorus. These 32 little rhymes will enchant your class.

Most important, these rhymes are enjoyable. They are light, catchy, and playful. On the CD, four actors bring out the natural rhythms and humor of the verses. In the text there are teaching suggestions and language notes for each rhyme to encourage the teacher to go beyond simple choral work.

Surveys for Conversation

B-I

This book provides 64 photocopyable survey worksheets for learners to fill out and then talk about. They can be used in several ways to prompt culturally interesting conversations. One is to give the surveys for homework after brief introductions. The learners then have the opportunity to think about their ideas and look up the words they need to express them. In the actual discussion, their anxiety level is lowered, and the resulting conversation is more focused, effective, relaxed, and enjoyable. The choice of topics varies from light-hearted personal (Clothing and Fashion, Pets) to serious (Save the Earth, Aging and Retirement).

In My OpinionGet your students talking about their personal views.50 activities designed for young adult and adult learners.

50 contemporary, thought-provoking topics are presented in two basic formats. Just over half of them are in the form of a questionnaire that students fill out and/or respond to orally. They then compare their responses to discover the ‘gaps’ in their views relating to good-bad, right-wrong, liberal-conservative, likes- dislikes, and so on. The other activities are in the form of opinion cards, twelve to a page. Each card is a question that asks the cardholder to initiate an opinion to be agreed with or challenged by the others in the class. The activities are suitable for class, small group and one-on-one situations. I-A

Gramática del inglés: Paso a paso

English Grammar: Step by Step There are two books each in the Spanish Paso a paso and English Step by Step materials. They cover exactly the same basic grammar step by step. In addition, they contain more than a thousand exercises that let students practice what they have learned, plus English/Spanish and Spanish/English glossaries, with pronunciation, that contain all the words used in that book. For each level there is also a teachers’ book, Teaching English: Step by Step, with suggestions on class management, the use of the activities, and photocopyable handouts.

These texts are specifically designed for Spanish-speaking students with little or no knowledge of Spanish or English grammar. The Spanish versions of these books, Gramática del inglés: Paso a paso, are especially useful for students with very little English comprehension; they explain grammar concepts in the students’ native language. The English versions use Spanish primarily to introduce vocabulary and to illustrate the similarities and differences between Spanish and English grammar.

There are three main types of exercises: • question and answer, • fill in the blank, and • pairwork. Many of the exercises are to be used in-class, but many may be assigned as homework. On each handout, there is minimal explanation of grammatical structures and rules because, as the title suggests, the point is practice. A Digital Edition is available.

In this book your students will encounter over 200 phrasal verbs in the context of a soap opera. Accompanying each of the episodes is a variety of exercises that explore the form, meaning, and use of these troublesome English verbs. Tune in every day, or once a week, until your students can say,”Who’s afraid of phrasal verbs?”

The Grammar Review Book by David and Peggy KeheThis is an easy-to-use book designed for • anyone who has learned English by ear• generation 1.5 students • learners with fossilized errors • anyone who needs basic grammar • anyone who needs to write grammatically. Each unit focuses on a problem, for example: “We should to eat vegetables.” Then the students work through a carefully sequenced series of exercises that lead them to recognizing errors and discovering how to fix them. This student-centered approach lets students learn individually, in pairs, and in groups. It frees the teacher to work one-on-one, observing, helping, encouraging, and only occasionally explaining.

14 photocopyable units explore the form, meaning, and use of the American English modal verb system. Nothing can make modals easy, but this text is so focused and clear that it gives both students and teachers the courage to tackle these helping verbs, one semantic group at a time. Here are a few examples: • Modals of Ability – Can, Be able to, Could. • Modals of Prohibition – Mustn’t, Can’t, Couldn’t. • Modals of Request – Could, Can, Would you mind. • Modals of Probability – Should, Ought to, Must, Have to, and Have got to.

The Modal Book

The Modal Book contains lots of fill-in-the-blanks workbook exercises (with the answers at the back of the book); it also serves as an easy-to-use reference your students will keep for years.

The dramatic reading of the story on the CD gives your students the chance to hear the phrasal verbs as they appear naturally in context when native speakers talk.

Do As I Say A TPR ClassicThe idea is quite simple. Each activity is based on a highly predictable series of steps, a Sequence. There are 3 types: Operations, Procedures, Rituals.

Each sequence typically includes eight lines of about eight words. The usual procedure involves a pair of students. One student gives a command (says) and the other follows it (does). They also ask and answer questions: • What are you doing? (present progressive) • What are you going to do? (future) • What did you do? (past)With imagination, the students can ask: • What was she doing when I stopped her?The sequences require physical activity and simultaneous, responsive language use.

☛ Use them one-a-day or as the need arises. • using a calculator • making popcorn • playing bingo • ordering a pizza • looking up a word

• folding origami • sending an email • using a laundromat • and 66 others

☛ An Operation uses a tool, a piece of equipment, or a device such as an ATM. The instructional language that accompanies the use of the device is the basis for the students’ language practice. ☛ A Procedure typically involves making or doing something, such as making a cup of tea or sewing on a button. ☛ A Ritual is a formulaic dialogue such as a greeting, introduction, or apology.

There are two basic purposes for this collection: to develop vocabulary and to stimulate conversation. The conversaton comes naturally through playing the games and discussing the vocabulary. The authors make special suggestions for teaching, practicing, and expanding each of the 83 vocabulary sets.

Some of the sets are at the basic and intermediate level: numbers/ordinals, measurements, months and days, time, irregular verbs in the past, synonyms & antonyms, phrasal verbs, family, weather, health, holidays, and finances. Sets at the more advanced level introduce compounds, collocations, idioms, and proverbs. This is challenging but useful and fun vocabulary.

Got It! In this game, the class is usually divided into groups that will compete with each other to create a vocabulary list. The groups are given a card with a topic. The objective: to come up with vocabulary that is relevant to the topic within a given time limit. When time is up, they compare lists. When a group has a word that no other group has, they score a point. The tension increases as cards are compared one-by-one. Inevitably new words are discovered, words are challenged, and there is conversation/discussion.

How to play (see the sample card for Sandwiches): The students fill in all the sandwiches they can think of. You ask team one for a word. They say “roast beef.” Another teams calls out “Got It!” Everyone who has “roast beef” crosses it out. You go on to team two ... The team with the most words not crossed out wins. After the game is over, pass out the “possible answers” card for sandwiches and discuss. There are forty vocabulary topics, 4 cards per topic, for total of 160 possible games.

Interactive Dictations Second Editionfor Intermediate ESL students There are 41 units using four dictation formats • Partial Dictation • Pair Dictation • Prediction Dictation • Dictogloss. Each dictation is preceded by an introduction and vocabulary/pronunciation work and followed by discussion topics. Pair and small-group work is encouraged. Following the discussions are an optional writing topic and a variety of other activities, including idiom/vocabulary work, role plays, and many cooperative learning activities.

Each unit begins with a short introduction providing background and context for the dictation. This is followed by a short vocabulary list used both to introduce new items and to clarify pronunciation. The central focus of the unit is a dictation followed by discussion. Most units are two to three pages long. The dictations take about 30 minutes; the discussions take from 20 to 30 minutes. In some chapters there is an additional listening activity. The units end with a follow-up activity which is intended to explore the topic further – often by having the students speak with native speakers. The full texts of the articles are given in the back of the book to be used in dictating. The texts have also been recorded by native speakers. The audio CD provides challenging listening to the voices of three different native speakers.

The units can take from 20 minutes to an hour. The dictations are available on a CD, read naturally by native speakers, letting your students hear a variety of voices. Listening to recordings is useful practice for students who may be tested with recorded material.

BBasic DictationsAs the title suggests, this book can be used with launched beginners and intermediates. It can even be used selectively with advanced students. It is aimed at the newcomer. Not only are the students improving their English, they are also learning about North American culture with practical information on how to get around every day in their new country.

It’s photocopyble. With 58 lessons in the collection, you may prefer photocopying, picking and choosing lessons that are most relevant to your students. However, the practical topics are wide-ranging and interesting, and your students will benefit from the fun and varied language practice in every lesson. Most lessons are only two pages long, with a short dictation, a discussion, and a couple of informative, fast-moving activities.

There are four kinds of dictations: partial, pair, prediction, and dictogloss. And scattered throughout the book there are also 18 listening activities – conversations and short narrations. The full texts of the gapped dictations are given at the back of the book. All of the dictations and the listening tasks are available on an audio CD. Every lesson deals with vocabulary and discussion.

AllDictation RiddlesA Photocopyable Collection of 153 RiddlesWhy use riddles? Because they are a fun challenge and call on the learners’ language skills and general knowledge. They can be used with groups large and small and with individuals. The subject matter of these riddles is varied and offers the opportunity to learn about fascinating people, places, and things from all around the world in the present and past.

These photocopyable dictation riddles are appropriate for a wide range of ages and levels of proficiency. The book is divided into three levels, from high-beginning through advanced. These are further divided into three sections: people, places, and other.

The vocabulary and grammar become progressively more advanced from Level 1 to Level 3, and the dictations longer – Level 1 up to 100 words; 2 up to 130; 3 up to 160. The actual dictation and corrections take about 30 minutes. The riddle topics also become more difficult from level to level. The notes after each riddle give additional information to share with your class to stimulate further discussion.

There are 4 CDs for listening practice or giving the dictation. Using the CDs develops listening skills that prepare students for phone conversations, radio, public address systems, and other situations where they cannot see the mouth of the speaker.

Living in the United States 11th edition, Updated A cultural-orientation handbook for students/travelers for education, business, or pleasure

This concise, easy-to-read introduction to American culture helps newcomers feel at home, make friends, and enjoy everyday life. Read independently or in class as an outline for discussion, it provides both practical “survival” information and facts that will lead to cross-cultural insights. The book includes basic information, customs and values, and country facts. It has been given to new students in universities and language programs in the U.S. and abroad.

Teaching in the United States A Guide for International EducatorsThis handbook is designed to help international educators, whether visiting scholar, professor, secondary school teacher, or teaching assistant, to understand and appropriately respond to their experiences as a teacher in the United States. In the first three sections of the book, Dr. Damron gives a detailed description of the U.S. educational system, describing types of schools and the culture of the American classroom. Then in a unit on American Educational Practices, she covers traditions and student/teacher expectations. Finally, she focuses on the personal experiences the international educator may expect within both the school and local cultures (particularly how to interact appropriately with other teachers, supervisors, and the school administration). A fourteen-page glossary of terms and expressions that an educator is likely to encounter is appended to the text. Dr. Damron’s overall intention is to make an international educator’s experience teaching in the United States as comfortable and successful as possible for all concerned.

Teaching Languages This is a clear and practical handbook that describes and illustrates 20 techniques and 17 tactics for teaching and learning any spoken language. The techniques are classroom practices that may take a full 50-minute class. Tactics usually focus on practice, and often require only a few minutes of class time. Frequently they are used spontaneously, as an error or question occurs in a lesson. They usually focus on a pronunciation, vocabulary, or grammar problem. Although Teaching Languages is designed for the teacher in training, experienced teachers will often find a new tool for their “toolbox” – a new way to do something or a format they can use and adapt to create their own material.

Creating a learning-centered classroom. Theories and practices of effective classroom language teaching are developed using reflective and analytic tools. Readers explore their own views of language learning and teaching through experiential activities, readings, and exercises resulting in action plans that make sense for their own classrooms. Although many of the examples focus on language learning, the frameworks can easily be applied to teaching and learning for instructors of many different subjects.

28 Vocabulary

Getting a Fix on Vocabulary There are thousands of words in English. Learning these words is a big problem. However, there are ways to solve it. One way is to become familiar with the process of word formation in English including • inflections, • compounds, • the most common derivational prefixes and suffixes, and • common bases. For intermediate/advanced secondary to adult students.

This morphological content is explained and practiced in 22 lessons. It is enhanced with engaging fictitious “news” stories and dramatic radio broadcasts using the forms studied. Among the news reports are a courtroom drama, a political debate, a dramatic rescue, a plane crash, an earthquake, a strike, a kidnapping, a terrorist threat, student demonstrations, and even an editorial on Poverty, Terror, and Climate Change.

The Dragons without Eyes and Other Chinese FolktalesThese 25 tales from ancient China offer interesting insights into Chinese culture. At the same time, there is a universality to the tales: foolish men lacking in common sense, (“The Money Sign”) and a wise woman bringing up her child to become a great teacher (“The Teacher’s Mother”). There is a sly fox tricking a tiger, silly monkeys, and of course, friendly dragons and “Dragons Without Eyes.” Each story is on one page with a sequenced list of key words and phrases on the back to serve as prompts for storytelling.

In addition to the stories, there are three other sections in the book that provide opportunities for language development. • In part two, each of the stories is summarized with ten sentences for dictation. And a series of questions leads the learners through a synoposis of the story as they answer the questions. • In part three, there are discussion prompts for each story. • In part four, there are short background readings that provide historical and cultural information that is relevant to the story. An audio CD of the stories is available for listening. On three other CDs a native speaker gives the dictations. A TG Supplement/Answer Key is free on web.

North American Indian Tales Compiled by Susannah J. Clark, illustrated in color by Ken Rainbow Cougar Edwards These 48 animal stories were collected from American Indian tribes across North America. The tales explain how the world came to be as it is—Why Bear Waddles; Why Dogs Don’t Talk; Wind; Bluebird and Coyote; How Fire Came to the Sierras; Butterflies. The illustrations, by a popular Native American artist and story teller, draw on symbols and motifs from the many cultures represented to impart the wisdom and mystery of the great oral tradition of the “animal people” tales. The stories are designed to be used as story cards.

Aesop’s Fablesby Aesop, compiled by Raymond C. Clark, illustrated in full color by Hannah Bonner48 of Aesop’s wonderful, classic stories, some very well known (The Fox and the Grapes, The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf, and The Crow and the Pitcher) and others that may be new to students (The Old Man and Death and The Hare and the Hound). readings on cultural holidays (Chinese New Year, Kwanzaa, and Cinco de Mayo) and on Christian, Muslim, and Jewish religious holidays. Photos showing Americans enjoying the holidays will stimulate conversation. An appendix includes historical readings, traditional holiday songs, some state holidays, and gift-giving customs. An audio CD builds listening skills.

This book is also a vocabulary development text that both focuses on specific words (in bold in the text) and teaches vocabulary acquisition skills. From context, students work out the meaning of each word. They match these words to definitions and do exercises introducing the noun, verb, adverb, and adjective forms of the words. These cultural readings naturally serve as springboards for conversation and writing. Students can also use website addresses given at the end of each lesson to do cultural research. Legends52 People Who Made a DifferenceBio-Sketches for Reading, Telling, Listening, Writing, and Research

Graded Readings from American Historyby Michael Ryall

This versatile book may be used in a variety of ways. The 52 bio-sketches have a two-page format. The first page has an illustration and a brief biography of the person. The back of the page has a timeline placing the person’s life within the context of events and other people in American history. At the bottom of the timeline, there is an internet address for further research. The pages are perforated for easy removal from the book. They can be used as prompts for role plays.

There are 13 groups of legendary people, each group represented by four people who made a mark in some aspect of American life. In each group there are four levels of challenge. For example, in the Sports Heroes group, Roberto Clemente’s biography is about 100 words long; Wilma Rudolph, 150 words; Bruce Lee, 200 words, and Duke Kahanamoku, 250 words. In other words, the biographies can be used by learners at various proficiency levels.

Heroes from American HistoryThis is an integrated-skills, content-based reader for intermediate ESL. This companion volume to the playbook Celebrating American Heroes can be used with the plays or as an independent reader on American history. It lends itself to serious cultural discussions and includes a variety of engaging activities: • reading and vocabulary development, • retelling, and • critical thinking and writing. The 16 readings are accompanied by maps and timelines that bring out the historical context in which this remarkable collection of men and women lived, struggled, and succeeded in contributing to their nation.

“This is a unique and wonderful book of 13 short plays in praise of American historical figures like Betsy Ross, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Jackie Robinson, and the first astronauts to land on the moon. The tone of the plays is passionate – they are exciting and fun but involve serious subjects such as war, slavery, race relations, sacrifice, hard work, effort.... There is a special role for beginning students as part of the chorus. Like a ‘Greek chorus,’ this group speaks in unison and adds commentary to the action.... Everyone gets to participate in the play, even in a multi-level class. You could think of the choruses of these plays as chants with cultural and historical content. That is, all the students get to speak lines in loud, confident voices, which is good for pronunciation, intona-tion, and fluency. At the same time they are portraying and discussing meaningful issues from history. These plays bring a level of excitement into the classroom giving students the unforgettable feeling that they are participating in American history.” – review by Anna Silliman, Hands-on English

We meet a cast of over 50 figures who shaped history. The geography and history that students learn and the skills they develop prepare them to meet the standards required for academic progress and citizenship. The 18 talkshows are available on two audio CDs. Before or after listening, learners read the Show Scripts aloud, as a cooperative, dramatic reading. The Activities Workbook provides exercises and activities that prepare the students for the scripts with a pre-reading, vocabulary work, and attention to idiomatic speech. Other activities follow up on the script reading with comprehension checks, more vocabulary work, a writing assignment, and internet research.

Real Life Stories for Interactive Telling and ListeningSo what is interactive listening? Simply put, it is the listener interacting with the teller as the story unfolds. In the back of the book are four copyable pages of “interactors” such as: Would you say that again, please? The learners are expected to use these interactors as they listen. First, they are learning how to express an interaction appropriately, and perhaps more important, the material is encouraging them to be pro-active participants in an information exchange session – an important skill in today’s workplace and academia. Each unit offers additional optional material. A complete unit includes: • An illustration and prologue • A vocabulary page • The story • A gapped version of the story • A sequenced list of words to guide retelling • A dictation summing up the story • A short idiomatic dialogue commenting on the story • A writing prompt • Internet web sites for further explorations. Hodja was up working on his roof one day

when a stranger came to the house and knocked on the door. Hodja looked down at him and said, “What do you want?”

“Come down and I’ll tell you,” said the stranger. So Hodja climbed slowly down the ladder. When he was on the ground, the man said, “Please, would you give me some money?”

Hodja looked at him and said, “Come up on the roof with me.”

The man followed Hodja slowly up the ladder, and when he got to the roof, Hodja turned to him and said, “No.”

They are known from Gibraltar to the Himalayas, from Timbuktu to Timor to Tajikistan, throughout the whole world touched by Islam.
