One of drag racing’s unique features is that the fans can see all of the action on the track from the stands and it looks equally as spectacular on television.
Unlike other areas of motorsport, drag racing is a participation sport. The ease with which a spectator can become a competitor is unique, which has given Drag Racing the highest participation rate of any form of motorsport in Australia.
To the uninitiated, Drag Racing looks pretty simple. Two cars racing down a track after getting the green light, and the first one to the finish line wins! Well, there’s a bit more to it than that, with pre-stage and stage lights, red light starts, reaction times, and handicaps all there to spice up the action.
The variety in classes, competitor ages and types of vehicles as well as regional competitions and clubs means that Drag Racing is fertile ground for any organisation who wants to be associated with a diverse community.
Where it all beganThere’s been some suggestion the first drag race anywhere actually happened in Australia in 1930, when a Mrs. J. Jones set an official time of 18.25 seconds for the standing start quarter-mile in her supercharged Alfa at Bondi Beach near Sydney. That predates the Americans by at least twenty
years, but the only competition was against the clock that day. The sport emerged, as we know it now, in America during the fifties. It came to Australia around a decade later, with events held on airstrips and closed public roads, and the first Australian Nationals event was run in 1965 at Riverside near Melbourne, close to where the West Gate Bridge now stands.
About ANDRAIn 1973, seeking an identity of their own, drag racers involved in the Australian Street Rod Federation established the Australian National Drag Racing Association, or ANDRA as its better known. ANDRA was delegated by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) as the governing body of drag racing in Australia.
ANDRA introduced a new system of classes, brackets and handicaps that we know today as Group Two. This opened up Australian drag racing beyond simple “heads up” competition, which remains the basis of the professional categories in Pro Series. In 1981 more new categories using “dial your own” handicaps were introduced as Group Three, and they remain the most popular areas of Australian drag racing.
In 1991, Group Four was introduced, combining the excitement of the “heads-up” start with the accessibility of handicap competition, using the 9.90 fixed index. The final component of the comprehensive ANDRA Pro Series
Drag Racing schedule was the addition of the popular Junior Dragster class in 1995, where future drivers face each other in half scale replicas of Top Fuel dragsters.
The ANDRA Australian Drag Racing Series (ADRS) was established in 1975, providing a national points series for the ten categories. In 2005, with the generous backing of Rocket Industries, the ADRS became the Rocket Allstars Racing Series run over six rounds annually between Perth in the west, and Mackay in the north.
Through the RARS and the six Pro Series Australian Championships for Top Fuel, Top Doorslammer, Top Alcohol, Top Bike, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle, ANDRA has provided drag racing with a solid national focus.
Fans and SupportersDrag Racing globally is unique as far as motorsports go, we are very much a family orientated sport and very proud of it. On any Drag Racing weekend all over Australia you will find Mum, Dad and the kids at the track, either as keen competitors or loyal spectators. Our sport boasts many second, third and fourth generation racers that have been raised around the sport and are now more than happy to involve their own families in what this exciting motorsport has to offer.
ANDRA Pro Series Drag Racing is the most exciting form of Motorsport in this country!

WITH OVER 4,000 COMPETITORS, DRAG RACING IS AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST MOTORSPORT CATEGORY
ANDRA Drag Racing has been recognised as the best in the world outside the United States. In 1994 ANDRA became a foundation member of the Drag Racing Commission of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile, and enjoys a healthy relationship with drag racing bodies around the world.
Over the past 15 years, ANDRA Licence holder numbers have grown from less than 900 to over 3500 nationally, without counting the thousands of racers who take part in ANDRA off-street events using temporary licences. Based on event attendances, ANDRA Drag Racing became one of the country’s most popular spectator motor sports in the late nineties.
Based on replacement value and the dollars put in by forward thinking state governments over the past five years, the
Australian drag racing industry now boasts around $65 million worth of venues. A conservative estimate of the investment of ANDRA Members in race vehicles and equipment produces a total value of over $410 million.
On average, an ANDRA National Championship event now represents an investment by the race teams alone of nearly $1.8 million.
Through ANDRA, Australian drag racing has shaken off its “larrikin” image. ANDRA Drag Racing is now a credible, popular form of motor sport. Maintaining and growing that is a great challenge, and in view of our successes to date, it’s one ANDRA is looking forward to.
Drag Racing Australia Group Ltd (DRAG Ltd) was formed in 2003 to act as the single commercial focus of ANDRA Pro Series drag racing activities.DRAG Ltd comprises of the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA), Willowbank Raceway in QLD, Western Sydney International Dragway in NSW and the Perth Motorplex in WA. These three venues currently stage the twelve events of ANDRA Pro Series Drag Racing.
DRAG Ltd is a non-profit organization intended to be a single, user friendly point of contact for commercial interests. The company will co-ordinate exposure and sponsorship for the sport and the tracks, as well as other projects at the national level.
Drag racing has developed some extremely viable products, as evidenced by the growth of significant corporate partnerships within the sport. The unique nature of drag racing means that careful co-ordination of events and series is necessary to guarantee maximum exposure.

“This is an extremely important and progressive step for the sport of drag racing in Australia. A great deal of the success drag racing has enjoyed has been the result of a co-operative approach from everyone involved, and Drag Racing Australia Group Ltd is simply another example of that. ANDRA now has a bigger stake in the commercial future of drag racing.”
ANDRA CEO, Tony Thornton

WILLOWBANK RACEWAY
2009 / 2010 PRO SERIES DRAG RACING CALENDAR
Western Sydney International Dragway is a world class drag strip, on par with anything in operation anywhere overseas and is built to strict NHRA specifications.
Spectators are accommodated on 9 metre high mounds on both sides of the track, in a stadium format. Prescribed safety regulations define distances between the racing surface and the height and position of safety barriers, so there is a gap of 50 ft [15 metres] between the racing surface and spectators at the start line, with the spectator areas angling back at 3 degrees to half-track distance, and then running parallel to the finish line. This has created a sporting stadium with unparalleled viewing opportunities.
The pit area is located on the north-western side of the track, behind the start line. It caters for up to 500 competitors and their tender vehicles and trailers, and is enhanced with a grid of asphalt roads and turfed areas in what is the current unsealed area off the end of the asphalt.
The racing is overseen by officials based in the three-story control tower, behind the start line. Vehicles are organised in seven staging lanes behind this tower, and access the racing surface through tunnels beneath the tower. The tower houses the meeting director, timing staff, announcers, media and six corporate hospitality suites as well as daily staff offices, including sales, management, financial and secretarial activities.

It is current, digital, and available via modest subscription (FREE to Motorsport News print magazine subscribers).
ANDRA Pro series Drag Racing has secured a weekly double page editorial, featuring top Drag Racing news, coming events, category ladders and TV broadcast times. Corporate branding is available through editorials and category point ladders that are rotated fortnightly.
Launched in 1993, Australia’s leading motorsport publication has evolved into an enthralling monthly read for all motorsport fans. Its success over the years has been based on a respected editorial team, which is renowned for its informed analysis and comment, on top of insightful race coverage. MNews is the authoritative and most-read print publication in Australian motorsport.
ANDRA Pro Series have featured editorials in monthly issues.
With a readership of 80% males between the ages of 18 and 49, Street Machine is the car lovers gateway to heaven. The magazine focuses on the latest motorsport news, car enhancement parts, events and entertainment. Distributed nationally it delivers a huge opportunity for ANDRA Pro Series Drag Racing and partners to reach their targeted demographics.

V8 SUPERCARS’ sponsorship package will take another step forward on Wednesday when a new deal is announced with Symantec.
The leading developer of ‘Norton’ computer antivirus and antispyware is expected to announce its backing of the category in a multi-year deal. Apart from becoming a ‘platform’ sponsor of the series, Norton will also take prominent signage on the TeamVodafone cars of defending V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes. Symantec’s
Norton computer products have recently backed Lowndes in a personal deal.
However, our sources suggest that there is a bigger facet to the new deal. We hear that the company will be the event sponsor of the Sandown rounds of the championship in August, which will be known as the Norton Sandown 300. – or will that become the Norton Sandown ‘360’ in deference to Norton’s popular product ...
The launch is expected to be attended by representatives of the company and Triple Eight, and V8SA CEO Cameron Levick.
AT a time when many companies are tightening the reins, Drag Racing has completed its biggest sponsorship deal since the ‘tobacco days’, with an announcement expected in the near future that Enzed
– the mobile hose and fitting service franchise – is to up its involvement in the sport in a big way as the major platform sponsor for the sport.
Having put a toe in the drag racing water by backing the
Enzed Nightfire International Series, at Willowbank, in January, Motorsport eNews understands that Enzed will now step up to a full major associate sponsorship of ANDRA for the 2009/2010 season.
Although unable to confirm any specifics of the deal when eNews spoke with him, Parker Hannifin (Enzed’s parent company) Marketing Manager Kevin Spiteri couldn’t help enthusing about the company’s involvement:
“Yes, it’s true, we are growing
our involvement with Drag Racing significantly,” he told us.
“The Willowbank event, the Enzed Nightfire series, was our first serious involvement, and it was great – the crowds, the accessibility of the teams to the public; the fact that alcohol isn’t on sale [ED: Other than corporate areas, Willowbank and WSID raceways both have ‘no-alcohol’ policies]. From our view that makes it a great family-friendly motorsport.
“And, I reckon drag racing delivers huge value and bang-

n MORE than $30,000 was raised for the Red Cross Busfire Appeal at the weekend’s World Superbike Championship at Phillip Island. Over 40 volunteers collected from race fans during the day, with spectators digging deep to donate over $9800, and $20,840 was raised from auctioning memorabilia after the races. The top bids were for a set of Anthony West leathers that went for $1500 and a Troy Bayliss signed Ducati team shirt for $1400.
n The Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar event has won the Qantas Australian Tourism Award for the best Major Festival and Event. It was the fourth award of its kind for the Adelaide event, which drew a claimed 291,000 spectators in 2008.
n Bob Pearson is recovering well after his crash in the Bathurst 12 Hour at Mount Panorama. The Sydney driver hit the wall at Forrest’s Elbow on lap 82, just past the four-hour mark in the race and after being evacuated to a Sydney hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, his condition has improved rapidly. Doctors now expect him to complete his rehabilitation at home.
BRIEFLY...
THE V8 Supercar grid is complete, with confirmation that Tim Slade will race for Supercheap Auto Racing.
As first reported in eNews, Slade will partner Russell Ingall in two Commodore VEs in the series that starts in Adelaide in four weeks’ time.
“Supercheap Auto Racing was the series’ most improved
team last year and promises to be even better in 2009, and I couldn’t have two better blokes to learn from than Russell Ingall and Paul Morris,” Slade said in a statement.
“This is a dream come true, it’s what I’ve been working towards my whole career.”
