The PROBE Volume 2, Issue 1

Thursday 31st May 2012

The absence of first years

in this year’s dental course did not stop us from throw-

ing the first dental event of

the year, aptly named

Fresherless Welcome.

The equation was simple: OHCWA lawn, a free BBQ,

dirt cheap drinks and the

people we slog our days out

with for a night to let loose

and get up to some crazy

antics.

This year’s UDSS t-shirt

design was revealed: and

possibly the cutest picture

of a molar bear to date!

For those of you who still have not got your shirt, it’s

not too late to see your lo-

cal UDSS president to

get your hands on one, and

why not a UDSS stubby

holder while you’re at it!

The lawn was opened up to a

much bigger size this year, giving much more room for people to

roam the gardens of OHCWA and

soak up probably the most contact

to nature we will ever get all year.

DJ Avi and Bayan provided

some huge tunes for the night that

got us dancing our feet off on the

makeshift d-floor.

A sneaky reintroduction of a dental

tradition was brought back, with

boat races being welcomed back like a starved man having his first

meal in 6weeks. Participation in

this “sporting event” was so enthu-

siastic that no one actually knows

who won the championship that

night. A replay of the games would

be needed at the next sport event

to officially decide a winner.

And so ended the night that

started a year of many more fun-

filled and care-free dental events to

come.

cess with lots of students

coming along for the free pizza and soft drink.

Apologies to the 2nd year who I accused of being a

med student stealing our pizza, you are always

welcome at dental events.

- Ben Zuidersma

UDSS put on Link week

pizza one lovely Thursday afternoon as an opportu-

nity for students in older years to have a chat to

those in younger years. The idea was to share tips

and tricks for surviving OHCWA and making some

new friends in other years. The event was a great suc-

That time of the year where

every student from dentistry, medicine and other health

disciplines put their differ-ences behind them united

for the biggest events of the

year: Allied Health.

Future doctors, dentists, physios, nurses and those

who could tell the difference between an arm and a

kidney packed out Metro City to full capacity. And

when I say full, I mean face in the armpit of the sweaty

guy next to you fist-pumping

full. Nevertheless, a dance floor packed to its limits

always ensures a great night, with the addition of

the flow of cheap drinks and amazing tunes. And who

could forget (actually many, I’m sure) the huge screens

for anyone to text in messages of sexual offerings

and oh so many booty calls.

Partying on till the wee

hours of the early morning ended a great night of

fleeting friendships with

those dirty med students. Who now we can go back to

hating for taking up our

parking spots!

Loupes Presentation

Recently we have had the pleasure of Kerr demonstrating Orascoptic loupes and Ivoclar with their Heine loupes. I believe many students purchased some of their products and I wish all the good fortune to all those who did! If any-one is interested in getting some of these fantastic prod-ucts in the future, or would like some product information, let me know and I can help organize it for you!

guest lecture of 2012. The

topic was "Dental Assisting- A Perspective for the Dentist"

and the ladies at the Central Institute of Training kindly

presented a very informative lecture including all the hot

tips. All involved gained a lot out of the night and I'm sure

it will help come progression to the "real world". Stay

tuned for further guest lec-

tures throughout the year, kindly organised by your

UDSS and sponsored by

MIPS.

“Dentistry

Students at their

finest !!”

The inaugural "Foot in

Mouth" Podiatry vs. Dentistry basketball

match saw PMSS

(Podiatric Medicine

Students' Society)

change the time of the event on several occa-

sions, I suspect due to

fear. But have no

doubt, UDSS con-

firmed their fears

when we took the cup in what was a closely-

matched, highly physi-

cal event. Winning by 3-points, Dentistry

was represented by

myself, Yusef K, Matt

Y, Emma T, Jen C, Yi

Xing L, Vinvent G and Yu Guang T. The

match saw some big

knocks and some big

shots but there is no

doubt a great rivalry

has been developed and I look forward to

the progression of this

event into the future. A big thank you to

PMSS for organising

the event and make

sure to check out the

trophy in the UDSS common room!

PROSH

Wednesday the 4th of April was UWA's annual PROSH day which saw the students collect over $140 000 for charity! UDSS had a theme of "Bogans and Hobos" (as a tribute to Ryan Moldrich as it was his birthday) and never before had a hessian bag or socks and thongs been so

classy. This was the first day that the School of Dentistry gave us the entire day off and many made the most of it by participating in this fantastic

event. The rave was filled with as many juvies and UDLs as ever and the paper was well, kinda funny. A big thank you to all those who participated and to those who didn't, you're lame...but there's always next year!

- Luke Rodman

Have a talent for writing, drawing

or photography? And want to

share it with the world; well your OHCWA peers? Please send them

in for the next issue of the probe!!

It does not need to be dental re-

lated, anything goes!!
