The Schedule

PLEASE NOTE: Each session will begin promptly at stated time. Attendees must be present for entire session to receive CEU credit

Tuesday and Wednesday, June 19-20, 20128 am—5 pm (with a one-hour break for lunch* each day)Basic Problem Gambling Counselor Training and Certification Exam Prep (16 CEU)Presented by: Joanna Franklin, MS, NCGC-IIThese sessions serve as an introduction to problem and pathological gambling disorders. Participants will learn about the scope and prevalence of gambling and problem gambling on a national scale, risk factors, and how the increased availability of gambling over the past ten years has affected the prevalence of gambling problems in the United States. The DSM-IV criteria for pathological gambling will be discussed, and participants will learn practical application of the most commonly used screening and diagnostic tools, including the South Oaks Gambling Screen. This session outlines the types and sub-types of gamblers and several approaches to the treatment of problem gamblers. Participants will also learn about the disorders that most often co-occur with problem gambling, and the effects of the disorder on family and loved ones will also be discussed. The Basic training concludes with an overview of the major topic areas covered on the International Gambling Counselor Certification Exam and offers practice questions to help participants prepare.

Thursday, June 21, 20128 am—NoonACT: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Problem Gamblers (4 CEU)Presented by: Nita Kordonowy, MA, LADC, NCGC-IIProblem gamblers often seek help or begin treatment when the high level of stress, along with emotional and mental suffering caused by circumstances and consequences of their gambling, become unbearable. Reducing all of these symptoms is not often attainable within the first 30, 60, or even 90 days of treatment. Problem Gamblers need to have some reprieve from their gambling problems, and ACT can be very effective in this stage of treatment. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is not focused on symptom reduction, but on helping the client learn and use the six core principles of ACT including developing psychological flexibility, defusion, acceptance, contact with the present moment, observing self, and committed action.

Noon—1 pm Lunch break

1—5 pmProblem Gambling and Domestic Violence: Beating the Odds; Beating the Family (4 CEU)Presented by: Colin Hodgen, MA, LADC-S, CPGC-S, NCGC-IIProblem Gambling and Domestic Violence are both serious, significant, and increasingly problematic Public Health issues in Washington State and the U.S. The intensity of these problems may be exacerbated by current economic “hard times,” with associated social costs. This presentation will review the current incidence/prevalence of Problem Gambling and Domestic Violence in Washington State and then describe the current climate of co-occurrence and linkage of these disordered behaviors. The presentation will provide concerned individuals with statutory resources and guidance as well as prevention, intervention, treatment, and social services resources. The presentation will highlight ethical concerns regarding vulnerable, or at-risk, populations that must be a factor in decisions/actions across the community: social services, prevention treatment, criminal justice, and advocacy. Special note will be made of the etiology and linkage of Problem Gambling and Domestic Violence; warning signs and indicators of the disorders; and risk factors for individuals and families..

Friday, June 22, 20128 am—3 pm (with a one-hour break for lunch*)SuperVisionQuest: In Pursuit of Dynamic “SuperVision” (6 CEU)Presented by: Colin Hodgen, MA, LADC-S, CPGC-S, NCGC-II; and Denise Quirk, MA, MFT, LCADC, CPGC-S, NCGC-IIAccording to Bernard and Goodyear, supervision is “an intervention provided by a more senior member of a profession to a more junior member or members of that same profession.” As such, it is a dynamic relationship that is evaluative; extends over time; and has the simultaneous purposes of: enhancing the professional functioning of the more junior person(s), monitoring the quality of professional services offered to the clients [seen], and serving as a gatekeeper for those who are to enter the particular profession. This interactive presentation will explore the scope and dynamics of “SuperVision,” from pre-supervisory preparation through the credentialing of a fully qualified, well prepared counselor/practitioner. Participants will learn and share from provided case studies as well as from “real life” examples provided by attending participants.

* MEALS: Beverage service will be provided. Meals are on your own.
