Vietnam has two major economic regions, namely north and south, which depend largely on ports in the river basin. These regions have large traffic demands, but there are a limited number of suitable locations for the deep-water ports. In order to overcome this situation, the Master Plan for port development along the Thi Vai River for the target year of 2020 was formulated. Cai Mep Container Terminal is the first deep-sea port to accommodate the Post-Panamax container ship in Vietnam. The quaywall is designed of “a detached pier type” made of combination of steel and PC piles in consideration of cost effectiveness. The pier is connected to the yard with three trestles. The soft foundation of the yard is very deep, or about 40 m in depth, which needs to be improved artificially. The Pre- fabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) is selected for soil improvement method. The foundation improvement method beneath the revetment at Thi Vai Port along the river is designed by Deep Mixing Method (DMM) which is introduced to port facilities for the first time in Vietnam. Problems addressed by the Project

Cai Mep and Thi Vai Ports are located along Thi Vai River in southern part of Vietnam. The Pre-fabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) is selected for soil improvement method.
