JIM CROW LAWS

Jim Crow laws were laws that separate states had instated by themselves. These laws were put in after 1896 where a “separate but equal” doctrine was enforced. This meant that black people would have the same facilities as white Americans however they would be separated. Some of the laws that were enforced included:

Arizona - Intermarriage: The marriage of a person of Caucasian blood with a Negro, Mongolian, Malay, or Hindu shall be null and void.

Florida - Education: The schools for white children and the schools for negro children shall be conducted separately.

LYNCHING’S

Lynching was the term used to describe several tortures or murders that were carried out on black Americans. In 1892 a massive 161 lynching’s were carried out these involved black Americans being tied to trees and beaten, and then castrated. Sometimes fires were lit and the Negros were burned alive. Many men woman and children used to join hands and dance around the burning, tortured men almost in celebration.

THE KKK

The Ku Klux Klan is a white supremacy group that mainly consisted of W.A.S.P’s (white anglo saxon protestants) they would try to prevent black Americans from attaining the vote by holding lynching's or even bribing people to change the tests that you had to pass to get the vote to near impossible questions for black Americans, such as:“How many bubbles are in a bar of soap?”

RESTRICTIONS ON VOTING

A number of tests/restrictions were placed on votes, many of which black Americans could not pass as they were ludicrous and simply impossible to answer. For both blacks and whites. However white Americans were not asked the same questions.
