PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Hope everyone is feeling ok after our very cold days in July. Welcome home if you are returning from a lovely trip anywhere.
Your Committee has sent out invitations to an afternoon tea get-together for members joining the club from 2015 till 2017, to get to know each other, hopefully we will find some of these members might like to step forward to become Committee or Activity Leaders over the next few years. This does not let the club's original members off the hook. We must ALL remember, if we join any organization or club you need to make a contribution in some way. This is the time to start planning for this club’s future.
As one of our Club’s Emergency Co-ordinators (Daryl) has left the club, could someone join Bob and Ray in this role please? The volunteer job description is : Helping to evacuate the hall in an emergency, taking responsibility for ringing 000, if someone has an accident or an episode during our meetings. Please let me know if you can help.
The Committee has been working on updating the clubs current membership list. PSPL now have the correct list of members. We will have 150 members on our list when some more inductions take place, and there are 10 on the waiting list. We have two Life Members and eight Non Active Members. The Committee at their last meeting granted Allan and June Chambers Non Active Membership. If anyone has any questions about anything please speak to me or a member of your Committee. Lyn Hudgson

BOOK READING
Book Reading (Evening Group)
The Strays written by Emily Bittto.
Set in the 1930’s in Box Hill, Evan and Helena Trentham are wealthy and living a Bohemian lifestyle which centres around the art world. Their daughter Eva becomes inseparable friends with Lily Struthers who has been raised in a traditional way by parents who are strict and not well off. The story is narrated by Lily and she tells how she becomes totally infatuated and involved with the Trentham family and all they have to offer.
All members enjoyed this book.
August meeting will be at Helga Braun’s home.

It is the first book of the Cosmopolitan Series and some of us are looking forward to reading the next book. Next meeting at Irene Baird’s on 24

July Fun
Backstage Tour of The Melbourne Arts Centre Theatre. Sunday 18
th July
Fifteen Members of the Probus Club of Templestowe Valley enjoyed an extremely interesting and informative Back Stage Tour on Sunday 16th July. This tour was led by Alice who was a great ambassador for the Arts Centre. She spoke very clearly (which is imperative for us seniors!), answered many questions and gave us a great insight into the workings of the theatrical, balletic and operatic worlds. She was very generous with her time and appeared to thoroughly enjoy sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with us. We all enjoyed a delightful morning. Thank you to the Arts Centre and especially to Alice. Liz Turner

VILLA ALBA historic house and garden Monday 25
th September 10am
Cost: $13.00 per person, payable at August or
September meeting
Villa Alba was built between 1882 and 1884 and is notable for its painted decorations. The house and the original grounds of about 1/3 hectare (over ¾ acre) was originally placed in trust for Anna Maria McEvoy by her family on her marriage to William Greenlaw in 1862. About 1882 the Greenlaw family apparently demolished the existing single-storey house whose name had changed from Studley Villa to Villa Alba in 1870. This resulted in the two-storey Italianate mansion we see today. The house was elaborately decorated by Paterson Brothers, who introduced realistic and illusionistic elements into their work which included grand scale murals. To complement the decoration the house brimmed with the latest Aesthetic and Artistic furnishings and luxurious bric-a-brac. The garden has been restored to take on the form of its predecessor in the late 19th century, it provides an elegant setting to this significant building. Through various owners and usage, the house and garden is now a museum and educational facility for the collection, study and display of it is now managed by the Villa Alba Museum Inc.
Morning tea will include filtered coffee, range of teas with shortbread biscuits Address: 44 Walmer St, Kew VIC

There is a silver birch forest of 500 trees, an edible garden with fruit trees, berry garden, organic vegetables, flowers and herbs. A formal parterre garden leads to individual courtyard gardens and through this runs a wisteria and rose covered arch and arbour of 100m with a sunken rose garden and fountain. The timing of this visit is to view the remarkable flowering of the wisteria arch (climatic conditions agreeable).

FINE DINING
“Fine Dining” is a great way to catch up with old and new members of our club. It is fun just to have time to talk and find out more about each other in a pleasant atmosphere, sometimes we find out how close we lived to each other as kids, even that we went to the same school. At our next meeting I will hand the leaders of the group an envelope with “Guide Lines” on how to organize your “Fine Dining” outing. All welcome couples, singles and if you would like to join with a special friend just give me a call.

FISHING
Winter weather and unpleasant conditions on the water have curtailed our fishing trips for some time. A trip to a surf beach to catch Salmon is envisaged soon but is entirely at the whim of the weather and the tides so cannot be planned more than a few days in advance. Members will be advised when conditions are right. Plans are also afoot for a chartered trip in Port Phillip Bay to fish for Snapper. This excursion will take place as soon as word comes that the Spring Snapper run is in progress and that is likely to be in September.. In the meantime the fishing group has either gone to warmer climes or stayed indoors oiling their reels and sharpening their hooks.

AS SURE AS EGGS ARE EGGS How did this peculiar way of saying ’without a doubt’ originate? In all probability, ‘eggs’ is a deliberately comic distortion of ‘x’. In algebra, a basic equation is that ‘x’ always equals ‘x’. If anything is accepted as true by all mathematicians and logicians, it is just that – that x = x. So if you want to give a guarantee of the accuracy of a prediction, for instance, you might emphasise that it is as sure as x is x or as eggs is eggs. “Do you love music?” “yes, but never mind, you may continue playing.”

THEATRE.
Please note as advised by Rhonda at the July meeting, all members are reminded that on final payment days, if a member has booked a theatre outing but is not present to pay and has not authorized for payment to be made on their behalf, that member then forfeits their booking and the vacancy is then allocated to the next waiting member. High Society: Lilydale Theatre, Sunday 20
th August
at 2.00pm. Tickets $20.00 A musical comedy, lyrics and music by Cole Porter. Tracy Lord's ex-husband, C.K. Dexter Haven, refuses to let her marry the bland George Kittredge as planned and the two reporters who arrive to cover the wedding find much more than they'd anticipated among this niche of high society. Imagine that Philip Barry had written "The Philadelphia Story" his classic 1939 romantic comedy, not as a play but a musical, with Cole Porter as his collaborator, and you have … HIGH SOCIETY! It’s not only the show's title but the show's first song, in which the Lord Family's amazing staff sets the scene (the Lord family lives on a waterfront estate in Oyster Bay now, not Philadelphia). Come join the Lords for a weekend of fun and games! Tickets will be distributed at the August meeting. Mirusia from the Heart: Whitehorse Theatre, Saturday 16
th September. Tickets $65.00
Australian soprano Mirusia will present her new concert From the Heart. Let the ‘Angel of Australia’ touch your heart with her songs about the heart – be it those full of love, those still looking for love or hearts broken by love. At a young age Mirusia was discovered by André Rieu and has performed around the world with him for ten years. While touring with André she has had her own successful solo career and has toured internationally with her own chamber orchestra. The most beautiful music from celebrated musicals and classical melodies are the common thread in Mirusia's repertoire. With her rendition of famous songs and her own compositions she captures many hearts. Mirusia will delight her audiences with her charming personality and beautiful soprano voice when she presents songs including Botany Bay, Colours of the Wind, Dvorak’s Song to the Moon and Chopin’s In mir klingt ein Lied. This promises to be a truly magical evening. Payment was made at our June meeting and tickets distributed at the July meeting.

Les Miserables: Whitehorse Theatre, Sunday 29th
October at 2.00pm. Tickets $36.00 One of the world’s most iconic and longest-running musicals, Les Misérables tells the story of Jean Valjean, a former convict who spends a lifetime seeking redemption. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France and the aftermath of the French Revolution, this timeless story of intertwined destinies reveals the power of compassion and the quiet evil of indifference to human suffering. Performed in over 40 countries and 22 languages, and with a lush, swelling score that features such famed songs as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” and “Bring Him Home,” Les Mis brings Victor Hugo’s revolutionary novel blazingly to life. Please pay at our August meeting. Tickets will be distributed at the October meeting. Further theatre events for 2017 are: Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks: Lilydale Theatre, Sunday 19

Bill the builder was going through a house he had
just built with the woman who owned it. She was
telling him what colour to paint each room.
They went into the first room and she said “I want
this room to be painted a light blue.
The builder went to the front door and yelled
“Green Side Up.”
When he went back into the house, she told him
that the next room was to be bright red.
The builder went to the front door and yelled
“Green Side Up.”
When he went back into the house, she told him
that the next room was to be tan.
The builder went to the front door and yelled
“Green Side Up.”
When he came back, the lady was pretty curious,
so she asked him, “I keep telling you different
colours but you go out the front and yell “Green
side up” each time; what is that for?
The builder said, “Oh don’t worry about that, I’ve
got a couple of Australians laying the turf out
front.”
