What better way to begin our morning than with a firm handshake and a friendly smile from our four greeters of the month, Colin Morley, Doug Schofield, Bill Smith, Alistair Camp-bell, guarantee this and will set the tone for the morning in true Probusci-an style.
Thanks Gentlemen.
Haney’s Wine Picks for April
I thought I had found a good
white to recommend at
$9.95 but when I re-tasted it
for this report it was too
bland, so no white this
month. The red was fea-
tured in June of 2011, only
to find it was available only
for a short period of time
for An Australian special.
I’m pleased to find it is
now in all the stores in
good supply and at the
same price!

Bruce Zvani-ga is the Di-rector of Transporta-tion Services for the City of Burlington Ontario, and
is currently serving as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Society of Canada.
A graduate of the University of Waterloo Civil Engineer-ing program, Bruce spent 27 years working in a variety of transportation roles with the City of Toronto. When the City of Toronto entered the advanced traffic man-agement systems arena in 1989 with the introduction of the Gardiner-Lake Shore Corridor Traffic Manage-ment System (now “RESCU”), Bruce led the planning, design, construc-tion and operation of the system. From 1998 through 2010, Bruce was responsible for the operation of the
for collaboration, and being a con-sensus builder. Many of us have a problem collabo-rating with just one of the opposite gender. Also I will add a very simple comment, "He MUST have his own bathroom". But, back to real intensification. With growth in population and jobs, the Region of Halton will have many thousands more people and need a corresponding increase in jobs in a government study that covers up to 2031. Where is Burlington going to put their share? The areas now being looked at are Burlington GO station / downtown, Appleby and Aldershot GO areas. Burlington is blessed with three GO stations (one also VIA) and multi-lane highways in four direc-tions ..... excellent transportation for a city its' size. If you think we're nearly maxxed out now in some spots. Think again. I'm sure you, "ain't seen nuthin' yet". I believe we're in good hands with Rick Goldring as Mayor. I hope the public comes out in credible numbers at 7pm, Tuesday April 28, at the Per-forming Arts Centre (its free) to hear much of what we heard at this meet-ing. It was somewhat of a trial run here at Probus, and it looked nearly perfect from my view-point.
and finish. Great with a BBQ and

On Thursday March 19, a good crowd of Probustites was treated to an interesting, informative, and very well-presented hour by our second-term Mayor, Rick Goldring. (OK, OK, maybe we Probustians are not all "good", and for sure there should have been more than 75 of us there that fine morning, but cer-tainly we were all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed listeners). At least we were all honest --- having tossed an average of $2.05 into the tooney bucket.
Mayor Rick started by telling us how much different the electorate was during his door-to-door walks in the 2010 campaign than in the one just past. In 2010 the big topic was, "Whadda' ya' gonna do about that, blankety-blank pier?". Where-as in 2014 he received a lot of posi-tive accounts about living in Bur-lington. Of course, some in 2014 did talk about the great flood of August 4th, and the Mayor was the perfect per-son to engage on that subject. A be-liever in climate change and the things it might make us suffer from, Mayor Rick and his family ended up with about five feet of, "Climate Change", in their basement --- and a pungent mix of sewage and storm water it was. A result of the flood is him now be-ing one of those pushing for insur-

ance covering all, or a major part, of such events. How much different should it be than wind damage, for instance? Oh, we'll pay of course, but when you consider the advantages of having the countless thousands in Burlington helping cov-er the few thousand who had dam-age, it shouldn't be too onerous. Well, let's hope. And now we get to the 'intense' part of the talk. The, "Where To Build In A City That's Built Out?" conun-drum. You see, Burlington is trapped. To the west there are the virtual ram-parts of Hamilton. To the south the depths of Lake Ontario, and going north, an impenetrable Greenbelt, backed by an actual rampart --- The Escarpment. To the east sits wealthy Oakville, well protected by its' Bron-te Creek Moat. (OK, Greenbelts have been developed before). Let's face it, Burlington is in a tough spot, but I hope the Greenbelt will remain green. So, with hardly enough acreage left to squeeze a Tim Hortons drive-through lane onto ..... what can we do? The populace seems to have little desire to build towards the heavens, so is intensification the only thing remaining? Here, Mayor Goldring likes to, at least lightly, refer to himself as an expert. You see, when he and his wife Cheryl moved in together in their Burlington home there were a total of three bedrooms for themselves, her four girls and his three girls. The three bedrooms eventually became seven. "Now, that's INTENSIFICATION", he pro-claims with a smile. We can pause here to think of other aspects of one man and eight fe-males. "A League Of Their Own", comes to mind .... as well as Mayor Rick being proud of his reputation
