Next Meeting Jan. 12th PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I’m not known for my words of wisdom, yet I find myself attempting to come up with a few for the monthly newsletter. As I have been reflecting on our ‘’journey’’ at this stage of our life, it seems interesting to me that we have arrived at a point of common interests, and common characteristics. We have done this while still having some very different beliefs, different backgrounds, and possibly different values. Nonetheless, we are now together. We now have the opportunity to make this a very rewarding part of our life. We have joined Probus of Mountain View. In many cases we have done this without much forethought. But, we now find ourselves participating with each other 2 or 3 times per week on average, or more in many cases. We have built some strong friendships, and we have come to appreciate the strengths of others. As President, I rely heavily upon Dorte, Andja and the Social Committee, Paul Douglas for digging up our speaker at each meeting, Don Godfrey for his unseen hours as Treasurer, Julie D’Costa for attempting to follow our discussion at our monthly Management Committee meetings, David Heaslip for providing Profile Speakers, and Mixers, Rachel May for the Newsletter, Ingrid McLeod-Dick for maintaining our current membership lists, Sylvia Head for providing 5 years of experience and guidance as our Past President, and lastly Chris Cable who is without equal in her contribution to our club. I can assure you I have learned the lesson about “appreciating the strengths of others”. I recognize my own weaknesses, which are shored up by our Management team. “Participation” has given me the opportunity to ‘’grow’’ on this journey with all of you. Possibly, you will follow this lead as we journey together. BILL Your Web Newsletter! As of last month, you can find, read and print the newsletter on our website. MEETING -NOVEMBER 10th 9:30 AM Mingle Meeting starts @ 9:45 AM Sharp! Next Meeting Jan. 12th

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I’m not known for my words of wisdom, yet I find myself attempting to come up with a few for the monthly newsletter. NOVEMBER SPEAKER: Jane Fleetwood-Morrow

Jane Fleetwood-Morrow is a professional artist who graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree and a Bachelor of Education degree. One wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Jane grew up in an artistic home. Her father, John Fleetwood-Morrow, was a professional photographer who was a longtime member of The Arts and Letters Club (of Group of Seven Fame).

During WW2, John joined The Canadian Air Force and was placed in a reconnaissance unit that was

deployed to Europe. Jane has a tremendous collection of sketches, paintings and photographs that her father produced while on route. They provide a very unique glimpse into the life of a reconnaissance unit during WW2. These war artifacts have rarely been viewed and have been requested to join the permanent collection at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. In honour of Remembrance Day, Jane has offered to share a visual presentation of her father’s accomplished works that tell a fascinating story following the actual route of a reconnaissance unit in Europe during WW2.

September Speaker: Dave Phillips Senior Climatologist – Environment Canada

Canadians are obsessed with the weather & Dave Phillips has 35,000 weather stories. His easy manner makes the subject enjoyable and informative. An incredible mind of facts and statistics blended with understandable examples to explain events - we now have more to think about as we watch the weather:

• There are 3 million lightning strikes a year in Canada • Times are changing – we have to put the beer in the fridge to keep it warm • Warmest we have been in 125,000 years • We are experiencing more severe weather conditions • We must adapt to a changing world of weather conditions and our infrastructure will need

to change as well. .

President's Cup for Fritzy Nydam

PROBUS OF MOUNTAIN VIEW TRAVEL CLUB

Planning is now underway for a full schedule of Travel Club presentations to begin early in the New Year. Under the very capable and enthusiastic direction of Helen Peacock, an ever increasing number of members have enjoyed presentations including such locations as India, Nepal, Vietnam, South Africa and China. Although we have a number of presentations in mind we know that this club has many avid travellers and we would therefore encourage you to consider sharing your experiences with your fellow members. Presentation

and AV support is available. We have yet to hear about the club supported European River Cruise, as well as most of Europe, Scandinavia, the Caribbean, Central America, or the South Pacific just to name a few. Even if your trip was less than ideal you undoubtedly have much to share with your fellow travellers. We would also like to hear from experienced cruisers or perhaps even your favourite US or Canadian locations. Many who attend the presentations leave to make plans for their next trip or perhaps just as important say that was interesting but not for me. Watch for more information in your next newsletter and sign ups at future meetings. Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss a presentation idea. Bob Baker Trave l C l ub Co -ord inato r
