Group Activities Book Club: Chapter Two -- Donna Haugen

Seven members met at Muriel Eustace's lovely condo in November to discuss Anthony Bidulka's mystery series. Anthony's novels introduced us to many interesting characters from the BTLG community. Each novel's main charac-ter is an ace private investigator, Russell Quant. Each adventure starts here in Saskatoon and takes Russell to different countries to find clues, and returns him to Saskatoon to solve each case. Our impressions of his novels were var-ied.

Anthony was nominated for his novel, Dos Equus, in the gay mystery division at the Lambda Literary Awards held in New York. He didn't win, but another Saskatchewan author, Jeffrey Round of Dundurn, won the prize for his story, "Lake on the Mountain: A Dan Sharp Mystery.” In 2011, Anthony Bidulka's name was added to the College of Education, Alumni Wall of Honour, B.Ed. 1991.

Our next meeting will be held at Elaine Tatarniuk's home on Jan. 21st at 2pm. Address: #5 - 215 Pinehouse Drive. Ph# (306) 931-1283 Luncheon Group — Bill Paulsen

We will not be scheduling a luncheon for December. I am sure many of you will be attending all kinds of holiday lunches with friends and loved ones. Kathi and Bill Paulsen will be away from January to April. Sheila Liota part-nering with Elaine Carter will be arranging the venues during this period. We invite you, if you have not already done so, to come out to one of our luncheons. We try to set up venues that offer reasonably good food at a modest price. Most important, the luncheons are set up to offer fellowship and a opportunity to meet and socialize with fellow Probus members.

Elaine Carter (e-mail [email protected] or phone 306-955-1905) and Sheila Liota (e-mail: [email protected] or phone 306-477-7745) will be arranging Dim Sum at the Genesis on a Saturday morning in January. The restaurant wants to wait until after Christmas before they start booking in Jan. The exact date will be available at the January meeting – you can sign up then.

Group Activities (Continued) Bridge - Doreen Butler

The January meeting of the Probus Bridge Club will be held on Thursday, January 16 at the home Jan and Kevin Wilson, 104 - 803 Heritage Crescent, commencing at 1:30 p.m. Please contact the Wilsons (306-374-3814) or Doreen or Ray Butler (306-373-0390) if you will not be at the Probus January meeting to register on the sign-up sheet.

Walking — Ineke Knight

Our walking group is a hardly lot that gather on Friday mornings. Due to lack of space, the picture of the group walking under the new bridge in October could not be included in the last newsletter so you have it to enjoy now. Added to it is a shot of two of the three brave souls (Al Morton, Anne McKenna and Ineke Knight) who walked on December 6. Ineke reports that it was very, very cold but they had warm winter gear and felt exhilarated coming back to a warm hot cup of coffee.

Those who have signed up for this tour must pay $7.50 per person admission at our joint Probus meeting on January 8, 2014. Also, on that date, additional members may sign up and pay their $7.50. Particulars about the gath-ering point and the time of the tour will be given to participants before the end of January.

Our Next Meeting

From the President — Ineke Knight

With the Christmas dinner on December 4, we are well on our way into the Festive Season. Parties, receptions, dinners and of course shopping for gifts for loved ones are all part of Christmas. Many of you will be traveling to visit family or making use of the Holidays to travel abroad. Whatever your plans are, may they be happy times with catching up on family news or renewing old friendships. On behalf of the Probus Executive, may I wish you all the very best for the year 2014.

It is hard to believe that another year will soon be over with new visions for another year. As you may already know because of the fact that the first Wednesday is on January first, we will have our first meeting of the year together with the second Probus club on January 8. I am very much looking forward to greeting as many peo-ple as possible for this combined event.

I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a new and exciting 2014. Sincerely, Ineke Knight

Since no-one seemed to want to meet on the first Wednes-day of January (New Year’s Day), our January meeting will be a joint meeting with the Probus Club of Saskatoon — Bridges on Wednesday, January 8 at 9:30. Our guest speaker will be Gregory Burke, who assumed the position of Executive Director & CEO of the Mendel Art Gallery and the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan in June 2013. During his career, Burke has curated more than 90 exhibitions and published more than 100 texts. He has worked with artists around the world, including organizing major exhibitions of Asian art.
