Summary

The abstract should be no more than 200 words and should not contain references or unexplained abbreviations or acronyms. Your abstract should be concise and informative and should read well as a standalone piece. In general, the abstract should have the same structure as the paper, starting with an introduction, and outlining the method, providing the main results and presenting a conclusion.

Ensure that the abstract contains all likely search terms because most indexers (e.g. PubMed) scan only the title and abstract of articles. Please make sure that the abstract contains your keywords.

The main text of your article should be split into the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusions; however, you are free to include subheadings that best suit your article. Abbreviations should be written out in full on first use. For all sections, please always provide the actual word count after the subheading. Use continuous line numbering to help the reviewer.

Introduction (max. 1200 words)Please aim to write a focused text which ends with clear scientific hypothesis(es) of the research to be published.

Materials and Methods (max 4000 words)This section is important to judge the reproducibility of the presented research. For helping the readers, minor but important details should be reported in the Supplementary Material. Reviewers evaluate the two sections together, so this should not provide any drawbacks for the authors. This section should also contain information about the data management and the applied statistical methods.

Results (max 4000 words)Describe the main results in details providing the necessary reference for the statistical methods used. Major tables should be provided as Supplementary Material, up to 6 figures and 4 tables can be used to illustrate the main findings in the text. Consider providing visual illustrations that can also help reproducibility of the research.

Discussion (max 2500 words)This section should be up to the point. Instead of describing the results again in length focus on the hypothesis/es put forward.

Conclusion for Future Biology (max 500 words)Importantly the conclusion is NOT a summary, and do not copy past sections from the text. In line with the philosophy of this journal, we ask the authors to discuss the significance of their findings and their

implications with regard to the future. How could or would biology advance humanity’s role and responsibility in the global network of life on Earth. This section should also help policy and decision makers and the media to reflect on the significance of the results achieved in the study.

In-text citations

The in-text citation consists of author surname(s) in the order that they appear on the actual publication, followed by the year of publication of the source that you are citing. The in-text citation is placed immediately after the information being cited, eg. (Black, 2017) For citations in brackets with two authors the ‘&’ symbol is used. If the author citation forms part of your sentence the word ‘and’ must be used, e.g. (White & Black, 2017) OR “White and Black (2017) indicate that…”If a document has more than two authors, provide only the last name of first author with ‘et al’ from the first citation to the last, e.g. White et al. FiguresFigures should be uploaded as separate files. Only up to 6 figures are allowed in the main text, other figures can be provided as part of the supplementary material. It is the author’s responsibility to obtain permission for any reproduction from other sources. Photographs should be submitted electronically in TIF or JPG format in separate files. Color figures submitted by the authors will appear in colour on the web; however, the extra cost of colour reproduction in the printed version must be borne by the authors. Authors will receive information regarding the costs from the editor after acceptance of the article.

Figure and table captionsTable and figure captions should be included at the end of the manuscript file and should be brief and informative.
