SCHOTT Instruments welcomes you!

Precise measuring during the process

with sensors from Schott.

Schott is the leading manufacturer of special glass

in Europe and is a leader worldwide. We offer tailor

made customer solutions for sophisticated glass

applications and systems in the household, health

sector and industrial fields. Production and market-

ing companies in all major regions represent us in

the vicinity of our customers.

Electrodes from own research, development

and manufacture

Schott has been active for more than 60 years in

the field of pH measuring. Schott, however, supplies

not only electrodes. Our sensors are tailored ac-

cording to the requirements of your applications and

are characterized by maximum quality, reliability

and a long life. These demands are met via close

cooperation with our customers (research, develop-

ment and manufacture) leading to tailor made,

technically detailed solutions. You will find a detailed

description of these precision sensors that have

been optimized according to process requirements

in this Catalogue.

Quality

The electrodes supplied by Schott are manufac-

tured with high precision according to the latest

manufacturing methods. Each electrode must meet

the strict requirements of the final examination.

Great variety of sensors

The electrochemical sensors from Schott cover

all applications for measurements in aqueous solu-

tions. They enable the determination of pH value,

redox potential, silver and halogenide ion activity,

dissolved oxygen, conductivity and temperature.

Operating ranges are from -30 °C up to +135 °C

and pressures up to 10 bar.

Sensors for various pH and

temperature ranges

Different application conditions require correspon-

dingly adjusted pH sensor. H Glass is utilised for

normal to high temperatures and the total pH ran-

ge (very small alkali errors), S Glass for hot lye,

L Glass for low temperatures, and A Glass is formu-

lated especially for the drinking water and sewage

range.

Shaft glasses with high chemical resistance, optimi-

zed to the application field of the sensor, are

important for the reliability of the electrode. Being

a manufacturer of special glass types, Schott pro-

duces these as a matter of course.

Certified safety for 10 bar and 135 °C

The HD electrodes of Schott ensure an examined

and certified pressure and temperature resistance

up to 10 bar and 135 °C. Thus they meet the

requirements of the chemical industry. We supply

these electrodes in normal batches with Works

Certificate 2.1 or against additional charge with

Acceptance Test Certificate 3.1 B.

AquaLine electrodes for the water industry

These electrodes are especially suitable for

measurements carried out in drinking water and

in the sewage sector. They quickly attain a stable

measuring value. Their smooth surface and sym-

metrical ring gap diaphragm are resistant to soiling

and ensure reliability coupled with a long life.

MultiSens

MultiSens electrodes enable the obtainment of

more information from a standard measuring point.

Measurement of pH, temperature, redox voltage

and conductivity can be made with a single electro-

de (in combination with a suitable measuring trans-

former), all of which can be done under process

conditions! Select the suitable MultiSens elctrode for

the parameters required by you. A double pH elec-

trode with temperature sensor can, for example,

automatically check the reliability of the pH measur-

ing point. This will reduce maintenance expenditure

and increase the measuring reliability without the

need to dismantle the sensor each time and without

having to employ buffer solution.

pH Glasses

Schott electrodes are manufactured with different

pH glasses. These are optimized for their various

applications and offer a high measuring precision

and reliability.

Reference system

The Ag/AgCl system is suitable for all pH applicati-

ons up to temperature ranges of 135 °C. Silamid®,

developed by Schott, is increasingly used as a

novel reference system. Silamid®, in practical op-

eration, produces fewer measuring errors through

interference currents as well as more stable

measuring value display under critical conditions.

The reference electrolyte is a silver chloride-free

potassium chloride medium. Long diffusion stret-

ches in the electrodes make an additional heavy

metal such as silver ion blocking superfluous. This

means improved measuring function with environ-

mental protection under practical conditions.

Diaphragm

Also of decisive importance for the quality of the

measuring result is, in the case of combination

electrodes and reference electrodes, the diaphragm:

the platinum diaphragm ensures in a wide range

of applications an unsurpassable stable and rapid

measuring value adjustment. We offer, together

with additional diaphragm types, an optimum

solution for practically every possible measuring

medium.

Connection to electrodes

The Plug Head System (also called S7 or S8 respec-

tively) developed in 1972 is now well proven in

industry and has long been approved unofficially

as European standard. Schott has, with the coop-

eration of major electrode and pH meter manufac-

turers, developed the new 6-pin SMEK plug system

with unequivocal contact identification for sensors

that supply more than only the pH value. The

robust SMEK plug system meets the requirements

of the chemical industry and has been proven

many times under practical conditions.

Mounting possibilities

The electrodes and sensors of Schott are offered in

various designs that allow them to be mounted in

practically all the usual fastenings and probes. The

electrodes with screw plug head allow the plug

connection of cables of variable length and are

suitable for all fastening devices and probes with

mounting thread Pg 13.5. The electrodes with a

throated shaft can be installed by means of O-ring

and Pg 13.5 bolting. The electrodes with flanged

cap may be held by a union nut or mounted.

What to do with electrode waste?

Schott has accepted used sensors from their own

manufacture for many years and arranges proper

waste disposal or a reuse of materials.

Information and application

Do you have any questions about the use of

Schott electrodes? We will be glad to give you

advice on your application.

Process electrodes are, in general, used in fixed

installed measuring points for continuous measur-

ing. The permanent availability of reliable and pre-

cisely measured values along with minimal main-

tenance expenditures are substantial requirements

regarding these measuring points.

This results in the question of which pH electrode

is most suitable for the measuring point con-

cerned? In answer, the electrodes can be subdi-

vided into the following groups:

Electrodes with liquid electrolyte

These are suitable for a higher temperature appli-

cation range and have a longer life than mainte-

nance limited electrodes. It is also possible to

expect a higher measuring accuracy, in particular

inthe case of electrodes with a platinumdiaphragm

and pressure application of the coating electrolyte.

The installation is more expensive than in the

case of electrodes with gel or polymer electrolyte.

Electrodes with polymer electrolyte (Referid ®)

These are low maintenance and are characterized

by high resistance to pressure and pressure

change. They are suitable for general applications

and also for taking measurements in sophisticated

chemical processes.

Electrodes with gel electrolyte

Require little maintenance and are favorable in

price. They are primarily used for standard appli-

cations in aqueous media.

Single electrodes

Used as separate glass and reference electrodes,

particularly in difficult conditions. With the addi-

tional use of an electrolyte bridge and pressure

application of the electrolyte it is possible to

achieve highly accurate measurements and long

electrode life even under extreme application

conditions.

Selection criteria for electrodes

The selection of a suitable pH electrode results

from the character of the process conditions.

Select a suitable electrode from the following

tables on the basis of the required pH and temper-

ature range as well as the pressure range. Know-

ledge of the conductivity or the salt content of the

measuring medium is helpful for selection.

Avoiding undesired influences on the

measuring process

Sometimes it is not possible to completely prevent

the soiling of the sensor through the measuring

medium. It is possible that a coating is formed or

the diaphragm is soiled. What is more, poisoning

of the reference electrode through agents from

the measuring medium (e.g. heavy metals, ammo-

nia, cyanide, sulphides) may occur. However, it is

possible to minimize these influences through

careful selection of the electrode, but they cannot

completely be prevented. A regular manual or

automatic maintenance process ensures reliable

measuring values in these cases.

When laying the cables for electrode connection,

splash water density is required for each connec-

tion. The connection at the measuring device

must be carried out in compliance with the

instructions of the manufacturer of that device.

In most cases, the measuring solution has been

already earthed on the process side. Measuring

points in solutions with little conductivity as well

as in glass or plastic fittings are earthed with

an earthing electrode integrated in the sensor or

by means of a separately grounding rod.

pH Glasses

Select the pH glass that offers the optimum

results:

H Glass: for high temperatures, in both the acid

and alkaline range, also for high sodium

ion concentrations

S Glass: in hot alkaline media with good

reproducibility and rapid reaction time

L Glass: for low temperatures and general

applications

A Glass: with fast reaction time in drinking water,

industrial water, sewage; for general

applications and in media with low ion

content

Diaphragm

Also decisive for a safe and reproducible pH meas-

uring activity is the correct selection of an elec-

trode type with a suitable diaphragm.

Platinum diaphragm:

Universal, showing its strength particularly in the

case of solutions with solid matter content and

extreme pH values and temperatures. High flow

resistance.

Ceramic diaphragm:

Robust for general applications, low electrolyte

outflow rate.

Ground diaphragm:

Preferred for liquids with high solid matter

content, easy to clean.

KPG®Ring Gap diaphragm:

Electrodes requiring little maintenance, symmetri-

cal ring gap, high resistance to soiling, extreme

pH values/temperatures can shorten life.

Hole diaphragm:

Electrodes requiring little maintenance, high resis-

tance to soiling, extreme pH values/temperatures

can shorten life.

Mounting dimensions

The dimensions can generally be adapted to the

existing measuring point. You will find a great

number of electrodes in the usual dimensions to

choose from.

The following electrode recommendations are

only mentioned as examples. Depending on

measuring point and measuring conditions, it is

quite possible that other electrodes may also

be suitable. We would be pleased to discuss these

items with you.

We reserve the right to introduce technical alterations.

Reference electrodes are used outside the tempera-

ture application ranges stated in this catalogue

with the help of an electrolyte bridge. For applica-

tions below 0 °C, the low temperature electrolyte

L 200 or the low temperature reference electrode

9834/9 respectively must be used. For applications

above 100 °C, a sufficient overpressure must coun-

teract the boiling of the reference electrolyte, eg

3.2 bar at 135 °C. Electrodes with liquid electrolyte

render, in a corresponding pressure application, a

higher temperature employment range and

a longer life than low-maintenance electrodes.

In the case of liquid electrolyte electrodes,

a higher measuring accuracy can be expected.
