$136.5 Million Bond Passes!
Congratulations on passing the $136.5 million dollar bond! This bond will help every campus in some
form or fashion.
The school board will approve an architect(s) prior to the Winter Break and will follow this up with
approving construction companies in January. Once these are hired, we will begin putting together
construction timelines.
Construction will begin this summer on some of the easier projects at Kennedy-Powell, Raye-Allen, and
Hector P. Garcia. We will redo flooring, repair some leaky roofs, and repair some air conditioning units.
At Wheatley, we will begin with some painting and hopefully some window replacements. The elevator
will have to wait until we can work with our architect more. We also hope to begin work on the drainage
issues at the high school and if things work out the way I think they will, we hope to begin construction
at Thornton in either late Summer or early Fall.
You will be involved in the planning of these projects. We are not experts in what you do each and every
day and we will need your input. The architects will be meeting with groups of you who will be impacted
beginning this Spring.
Thank you to all who participated in the Temple ISD
Canned Food Drive. All donations will be contributed
to Churches Touching Lives for Christ.
7.986 Canned food items were donated!
We appreciate all Dr. Moger did for Western Hills today. I loved everything that you said and all of the very specific
comments that you made. Everything you did and said was just perfect. Thank you so very much.
Kathy Cook, Western Hills Elementary
The Temple High School Culinary Arts Department won the baking contest for Temple College's Kings and Queens of
Cuisine! Congratulations! I was so impressed with not only the food and its presentation at the Kings of Cuisine, but loved
the spirit the students brought to the event. Congratulations
Jennifer Graham, Temple College Foundation
I am not sure of the name of the officer on our campus when we had the gun threat, but he was wonderful!
He came to talk to my class to calm fears; he ate with the children, and was very kind.
Thank you for taking care of us as well as our babies!
Kelli Hesse, Kennedy-Powell
I just wanted to send a quick note of gratitude and recognition for Billy Madden Sr.
Billy has been driving our route (#149) to and from Canyon Creek Townhomes this past year. In the past, this route seems
to be challenging for many drivers. Billy aims to develop a rapport for his students and quickly mitigates any problems that
arise. He genuinely cares for the kids. As a result, we have received very few referrals from his route. This was typically
a route that accounted for as much as 25% of our total yearly discipline referrals school-wide!
Further, this afternoon, he sensed that I was pre-occupied and inquired to find out what was going on. I told him that I
was going to be busy preparing spaghetti dinners for close to 1,000 Thornton family members. He asked if he could help
and I gladly accepted. When his route was complete, he came to our kitchen and went right to work cooking
spaghetti. He even stuck around until after 10:00 tonight and helped me clean the kitchen from stem-to-stern!
It’s the nature for school districts to laud educators for their efforts, but it is support personnel like Billy that truly create
the heart of a Wildcat!
Kudos, Craig A. Wilson, Principal, Thornton Elementary School
I would like for you to know that Kyle Proctor is a person who goes beyond the call of duty. He assisted me with entering
my grades. He has an extreme amount of patience and exhibits characteristics of a true professional. I didn't feel rushed
and he didn't get upset when I asked him the same questions more than once. I just wanted to acknowledge him and tell
you that he is representing TISD very well. Thank You!
Cherie McLean, Kindergarten Teacher, Raye-Allen
Shout Outs
Campus and District Attendance Update
95% student attendance is one of our goals this year. I wanted to give you a snap shot of where we are. Look at it
from several perspectives. Firstly, the highest attendance percentage schools. Congratulations!
The most improved campus is Wheatley.
Way to go Wheatley! If you are a campus whose attendance has substantially gone down, your team needs to visit
on this. Our students cannot learn if they are not in school.
We cannot control what happens outside of our school, so we are limited on what we can do to promote attendance.
But I do know that we accomplish what we put our minds to.
HB 2610's Impact on the 2016-2017 School Calendar
HB 2610 changed how we calculate the school calendar. No longer will we determine instructional days based upon 180 days,
the instructional year will be based upon 75,600 minutes.
School still cannot begin prior to the 4th Monday of August with most of our Bell County schools considering beginning on Tuesday,
August 23. This was a recommendation from our DEIC representatives. Additionally, if we add 10 minutes onto the elementary
school day, we could gain 3-4 additional days throughout the year to possibly provide planning or professional development time.
Minutes are calculated based upon the school(s) having the shortest day. This would impact the bus schedule so we will need to
visit with the Transportation Department on this.
Two bad weather days have to be included in the calendar and these would be at the very end of school. School cannot end
prior to May 15. We are hoping to end our students school year prior to June 1 with graduation remaining at its usual date and
time. Teachers must have a 187 day contract by law.
We would continue to have a week off at Thanksgiving and the last 2 weeks of December off for Winter Break. We are going to try
to return to classes on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. More to come! The DEIC will continue to meet on this.
