Because of this phenomenon, any unsealed gaps effectively cancel outthe noise reduction benefits of even the highest-rated sound doors. To be effective, acoustical door assemblies require gasketing thatprovides a complete, uninterrupted and air-tight seal around head, jamb and sill. If all sides of the door are not sealed, the gasketing usedwill provide little or no sound-control value.
Imperfect alignment is a common cause of gaps even in newly installedgasketing. Problems can also surface later on as buildings shift and settle and doors cycle through changes in temperature and humidity.ZERO solves the problem efficiently with adjustable gasketing.
Models such as the # 770 adjustable jamb-applied gasket are designed to perform consistently over time. When clearances increase, a few turns of a screwdriver is all it takes to restore a sound-tight seal.
ZERO’s SOUND TRAP sound control systems are solving soundproblems in all types of facilities — including performing arts centers, recording studios, commercial offices, hospitals, schools, churches and apartment buildings, as well as industrial plants.
ADJUSTABLE GASKETING: KEY TO OUR SUCCESSNobody does sound control better than ZERO. Our sound seals andsystems are built to withstand the stress of the installation process andperform reliably. We use advanced technology to master two criticalchallenges: creating an effective sound barrier at the perimeter of the door AND preventing gaps in that barrier for the life of the assembly.
Gaps in sound barriers are a major problem because sound travelsthrough any opening with very little loss. While the amount of air flowingthrough a gap increases in proportion with the size of the gap, the size of the gap in a sound barrier does not matter. A small hole transmitsalmost as much sound as a much larger gap.
The integrity of the system, properly installed, is essential to its soundrating. ZERO guarantees the performance of SOUND TRAP systems in rated assemblies provided that other manufacturers' gasketingproducts are not mixed with ZERO components.

For technical information about acoustics, ask for a copy ofSound Solutions from ZERO. Our 20-page brochure discussesthe basic principles of acoustics to help define and quantifynoise problems. It explains how sound transmission throughdoors is measured and compared using STC – SoundTransmission Class–ratings. The brochure also explains thevital role of gasketing in those assemblies and walks youthrough the necessary steps for practical applications.
Our SOUND TRAP 52 STC rated systems are designedfor use with sound-rated single metal doors with acased-opening frame. They provide an STC 52 ratingwhen properly fitted with STC 55 or higher acousticaldoors. That level of sound control means that loudsounds will be heard only faintly, or not at all, on theopposite side of the door, which satisfies the typicalneeds of recording studios and performance halls. It isalso suitable for office buildings and other commercialfacilities that need to mute very loud noise originatingfrom outside–such as the sound of aircraft overhead orheavy city traffic nearby–as well as interior equipmentnoise. A metal frame without a stop is required in order to use the Model #770 adjustable head and jamb seal, which is an important component in this system. The # 770 is recommended for ensuring the highestpossible rating for most purposes.
SOUND TRANSMISSION CLASS(STC) TABLE
STC PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
50 -60 Excellent Loud sounds heard faintly or not at all.
40 - 50 Very Good Loud speech heard faintly but not understood.
35 - 40 Good Loud speech heard but hardly intelligible.
30 - 35 Fair Loud speech understoodfairly well.
25 - 30 Poor Normal speech understoodeasily and distinctly.
20 - 25 Very Poor Low speech audible.
Our featured SOUND TRAP gasketing systemscan satisfy a wide range of common commercialand industrial sound-control applications for singleswinging doors – as well as provide privacy behinddouble doors for typical office applications.

Pairs of doors pose additional challenges for soundcontrol because there are more openings to seal. The need for a meeting stile means there will alwaysbe relatively more sound leakage through pairassemblies than with single doors. Properly fittedwith STC 52 or higher acoustical doors, ZERO'sSOUND TRAP-PAIRS system for metal doorsachieves an office-friendly STC rating of 41 with anoptimal configuration that balances those limitationswith appropriate, cost-effective technology.
SOUND TRAP 49 STC rated systems for single doorsfeature several alternative head and jamb seals designedfor use with frame stops. The 49 STC value they providemeans that loud speech will be heard only faintly andcannot be understood on the opposite side of the door. That level of acoustic performance provides very goodsound control suitable for a variety of applications rangingfrom busy schools to multi-family residential buildingsand any settings requiring private conversation, such asdoctors' offices, counseling centers and churches.
For a pairs configuration with suitable wood doors, youneed Model #383 astragals for the meeting stile. #383provides three sets of seals to block sound: the neoprenebulb with extra “lip” of neoprene in the primary seal at themeeting edge, plus another neoprene “finger” for addedsound cushioning against the active door.

Help for Boosting the Sound Performance of DoorsUsing the right gasketing to block sound leaks around theperimeter is not going to solve a noise problem if the dooritself is not an effective sound barrier. Our EngineeringDepartment can help evaluate possibilities for enhancingthe performance of low-rated doors with the addition ofone or two layers of sound-blocking material.
ZERO's SOUND SHEET sound barrier is a dense, limp-mass vinyl material that acts as a thin, dense soundbarrier layer. It is as effective as solid lead in stopping the transmission of sound and can increase STC values by up to 6 points. SOUND SHEET is suitable for layeringduring the construction of acoustical doors. In somecases, it can be applied as an outer layer to an existingdoor, provided it is installedcarefully with trim strips overits seams. It can also bepainted with latex paint.Available from ZERO instandard black.

ZERO's many years of leadership and innovationin developing intumescent solutions forinternational and U.S. positive pressure coderequirements have produced engineered gasketingsystems that simplify and streamline compliancefor the entire building team. We continue to buildproducts and systems that meet the higheststandards of design and life safety.
ZERO developed the INTUMET™ intumescentmaterial used in all of our intumescent products, and we manufacture all INTUMET products at our New York facility. The seals in our engineeredgasketing systems are made using proprietary SOFTPUFF™ technology that delivers the performancebest suited for most fire and smoke doors.
Soft Puff INTUMET is a rubber matrix material thatbegins intumescing at the relatively lowtemperatures where organic materials begin toemit combustible and noxious gases. It expandsgradually to fill all gaps with moderate force thatwill not unlatch the door, and has sufficientreservoir capacity to continue intumescing ifescape doors are closed again.
In addition to our standard Soft Puff intumescence,we continue to develop specialized INTUMETformulations to optimize performance for specificneeds.

Our engineered INTUMET 20-minute Smoke andDraft Control systems designed with integralintumescent seals are recommended for most 20-minute applications. Recessed or concealedintumescent solutions offer a number of benefitsthat make them attractive to architects and codeofficials. Integral seals cannot interfere with doorfunction, prompting removal at the job site–bothcommon problems associated with the use ofsurface-applied seals. For intumescent protectionengineered into the door itself, the ability toconceal the recessed seal under veneers is also an aesthetic plus for designers. And code officialsfind it easier to judge correct installation wheninspecting positive pressure assemblies withintegral intumescent seals.
Manufacturers and machiners licensed by thetesting laboratories can use ZERO's testprocedures to add positive-pressure fire labels andair leakage supplemental "S" labels to ITS and ULnegative-pressure doors installed with one of the20-minute INTUMET systems shown below.
These listings are available for WDMA Type S-9,13 and 17 wood door constructions, up to 4'0" x9'0" single, 6'0" x 9'0" standard pair with woodframes. Each system is approved for all labeledwall constructions.

Which would you rather walk on or install? Both pass the ANSI standard load test, but theZERO saddle also passes the test of time andweight. The heavier-gauge material in ourthresholds allows you to drill and screw rightthrough and into concrete. Lighter-gauge saddles can buckle and often loosen becausescrews cannot be tightened fully. Be sure you get the best...specify the heavier gauge when you need saddles.

ZERO designs and builds door bottoms to last. Our automatic door bottoms have been tested through 5 million cycles. You can specify with confidence — these really work! The advanced technology common to all ZERO models utilizes a concealed flat spring mechanism, whichactivates when the door is closed, lowering a neoprene seal insert against the floor or saddle. A protruding, hinge-side "plunger" is compressed by the frame as the door closes to activate thespring. The seal then drops in a scissors-like motion from the hinge side, adjusting to the floorfrom a pivoting point. This motion ensures a smooth drop without drag for a tight seal, evenon an uneven floor. As the neoprene seal compresses, it forms a tight, secure sealagainst the saddle or floor. The seal retracts automatically as the door is opened.
Our fire-rated mortised models can be used on doors tested underprocedures allowing cutouts equal to or smaller than the size of thecutouts required for ZERO automatic door bottoms.

POLYPROPYLENE BRUSHInsert polymer which will not deteriorate under harsh climaticconditions. Consists of a “brush” of polypropylene fiber held by a carrier of the same material. Together they are welded into ahomogeneous bond which means the fibers are fixed effectively in place. The fiber carrier will not corrode, unlike the metal carrierof traditional brush.
The polypropylene fin running down the center of the fibers isunique. It is every bit as flexible as the fibers themselves but, more important, makes the material twice as effective as a“traditional brush” in air infiltration tests.
FASTENERSSheet metal screws are supplied for all extruded head and jambmaterial, color-matched to item, in the following finishes: zinc-plated steel, brass-plated steel, black oxide-plated steel, stainlesssteel. Screw heads supplied: Phillips, slotted, flat, truss and pan.
Phillips flathead wood screws and 1” plastic anchors are suppliedfor all saddles at no charge. #10, 11/4"-13/4" depending on height of saddle. Lead shields, machine screws and anchors suppliedupon request at additional cost.
