IntroductionOptiMax™ is a synthesis work-station that is beyond traditional synthesis equipment. It is geared towards today’s workflows in chemical and process development labs. It simplifies organic synthesis by eliminating cumbersome steps and ensures precise and accurate execution of chemical synthesis.It heats and cools efficiently with-out the need for cryostats, oil or ice baths, offers a large variety of different reactors and stirrers, and is operated by a simple touch screen. Even though its use is simple, experiments are carried out with highest precision, reproducible and traceable increasing produc-tivity in chemical and process development significantly.
A Remarkable ThermostatOptiMax™ is a single self-contained box with a built-in solid state ther- mostat covering the entire tempera-ture range without an additional cryostat. The powerful Peltier-based thermostat provides the necessary performance to control the temperature of the reaction mixture accurately and reproduc-ibly. It grants outstanding heating and cooling rates in the entire temperature range from −40 to 180 °C. Even strong chemical reactions are kept at constant temperature, ensuring that the experiment is carried out safely and the reaction kinetics remains unaffected.
OperationOptiMax™ is operated completely effortless using a smart and intui-tive touch screen. Changing experi-ment parameters, such as temper-ature or stirring speed is a matter of seconds and doesn’t require any training. The experiment is either carried out step-by-step or programmed and completely un-attended. The safety monitoring system ensures safe execution of the individual tasks without perma-nent supervision.All data and relevant information are displayed and recorded as the experiment proceeds. For further evaluation the recorded data can be transferred to either iControl™, the sophisticated PC software or MS-Excel®.

In chemical and process development, experiment quality is key. METTLER TOLEDO’s OptiMax™ is designed to help make better decisions faster. It executes experiments with great accuracy, providing critical and information-rich data. Often, chemistry can be understood only when additional information, such as the reaction mechanism or the kinetics, is available.
Key reaction species including intermediates and by-products are easily monitored in real-time with ReactIR™, an FTIR-based in-situ reaction analysis tool. The analysis is conducted in the reaction mixture itself, eliminating errors associated by taking samples, and allowing organic chemists to quickly understand if the correct reaction occurred and to observe its start- and endpoint.
The precise temperature control and the high reproducibility of an experi-ment makes the OptiMax™ the ideal workstation to optimize crystalliza-tion processes when combined with the particle characterization system FBRM®. It provides immediate insight into the particle system, enabling chemists and chemical engineers to quickly screen experimental param-eters and develop a scalable process in early process development.
The iC software suite allows scientists and engineers within the pharma-ceutical, chemical and specialty chemical industries to convert the data collected in their experiments into important process knowledge. It provides a unique perspective when it comes to integration of data sets from other equipment, and shares a common design, so users learn the software once and use many instruments. The seamless integration of complementary data sets contributes to the faster understanding of the process under investigation.
