    MANAGED ETHERNET DELIVERY The MetroCONNECT MC12000 platform offers a high density Ethernet Aggregation and Service Delivery solution for fibre or copper distribution from core network to customer sites, at which MetroCONNECT stand alone CPE devices may be deployed.

    Compared with traditional SDH/PDH infrastructures, modern Packet-switched networks are inherently less ‘deterministic’. Telecoms Carriers and Service Providers require not only to provision ‘Carrier Ethernet’ WAN circuits, but to provide comprehensive ‘birth certificate’ details of the end-to-end performance characteristics of their services relative to customer ‘Service Level Agreements’ (SLAs). They may also need to monitor in-service performance to ensure that under differing load conditions, performance does not dip below contracted levels.

    Metrodata’s line of cost-effective Carrier Ethernet Demarcation Devices support advanced configuration and management facilities including multi-level VLAN tag push/pop and L2CP (Layer-2 Control Protocol) handling. Comprehensive support for performance assurance protocols include IEEE 801.1ag, ITU-T Y.1731 and TWAMP (Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol). Each of our products include Metrodata’s custom ‘MetroSAM’ (Service Assurance Module) hardware for test traffic generation, packet loopback and traffic analysis, enabling support for high-precision circuit ‘turn-up’ test reporting to standard RFC2544 and ITU-T Y.1564 test profiles, detailing such characteristics as Committed Information Rate (CIR), Packet-Loss Ratio (PLR), Delay (or ‘latency’) and Delay Variation (or ‘jitter’).

    NETWORK PERFORMANCE ASSURANCEThe NetTESTER family offers a range of powerful & versatile Ethernet network test and monitoring capabilities for the Enterprise sector. Intended for ‘always-on’ deployment at key points throughout the network, NetTESTER represents a new paradigm in Performance Assurance.

    Most frequently deployed at locations throughout a multi-site Wide Area Network, NetTESTER devices may be installed either directly in the ‘data path’, between for example a Service Provider’s WAN termination point and the Enterprise’s own LAN equipment, or simply on any convenient Switch or Router port within the LAN. In the former case, NetTESTER units are fully transparent to user traffic and yet perfectly positioned for test, monitoring and impact analysis applications. In the latter, whilst not directly in the data path between LAN and WAN, NetTESTER is ready ‘on-demand’ for test-traffic generation, loop-back and analysis of traffic performance to/from any other similarly equipped site within the network, and can provide ‘always-on’ background monitoring and alarming in the event of performance degradation relative to pre-defined threshold criteria.

    The NT1003, NT1005 (1Gb capable) and NT10G05 (10Gb capable) products (each available with a variety of PSU options for flexibility and resilience), include Metrodata’s custom ‘MetroSAM’ (Service Assurance Module) hardware for test-traffic generation and loop-back, supporting industry-standard test profiles RFC 2544 and ITU-T Y.1564, for both Layer-2 (Ethernet Switched) and Layer-3 (IP Routed) environments. Each device also supports background monitoring via standard protocols including ITU-T Y.1731, for Ethernet Switched environments, and TWAMP (‘Two-way Active Measurement Protocol’), for IP-Routed infrastructures.

    Users access the NetTESTER either via a local terminal/emulator, or more normally remotely across the network from a Management console application via Telnet/SSH or Web Browser, to configure and instigate test procedures or to monitor results. In the case of background monitoring, SNMP ‘TRAP’ alarms are issued in the event of a breach of pre-determined performance threshold parameters, including throughput, delay (latency), delay variation (jitter), packet-loss, and overall ‘uptime’.

Metrodata supplies a wide variety of Transceivers in the most popular industry-standard formats. Accurate ‘vendor coding’ ensures compatibility with the major equipment vendors’ expensive ‘own-brand’ products.

    The Metrodata team are specialists in Interface Matching for Networking and Communications products, and have experience in protocols including Ethernet, PDH/SDH, Serial, ATM and, most importantly, all aspects of Fibre Communications, including Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM and DWDM).

    Networking equipment has evolved to use pluggable transceivers rather than the historic fixed-format interfaces, typically soldered onto a circuit board. There are various different MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) standards for pluggable transceivers, although some of the most common varieties are shown below.     SFP FIBRE TRANSCEIVERSmall Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) is a compact, hot pluggable transceiver used in both Telecommunications and Data Communications applications. Standard fibre SFP transceivers have dual ‘LC’ connectors, whilst single-fibre ‘BiDi’, SFP transceivers present a single ‘LC’ or ‘SC’ connector. Operating speeds vary from 100Mbps to 4Gbps, supporting fibre links of up to 200km.

    SFP+ OPTICAL TRANSCEIVEREnhanced Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP+) transceivers use the same physical case format as SFP, but support operating speeds of 8Gbps and 10Gbps.SFP and SFP+ transceivers are readily available for both multi-mode and single-mode fibre applications and also for copper cable via both RJ45 and, albeit rarely, miniature dual co-axial connectors.

    XFP TRANSCEIVERSlightly larger than SFP+ devices, XFP transceivers support 10Gbps Ethernet, 10Gbps Fibre Channel, SDH (STM-48) and Sonet (OC-192) applications.

    QSFP+ TRANSCEIVEROffering 40Gbps connections via a number of multiplexed wavelengths, QSFP+ transceivers are slightly larger again than the XFP format.

    PASSIVE WDM MULTIPLEXERSAlso under the MetroWave brand are our range of passive CWDM and DWDM optical multiplexers allowing independent services to be converged over a singlemode fibre pair. Each service is assigned a different wavelength, all of which are combined for transmission over a single Fibre Transmit/Receive pair.
