Joint Design The joint width must be designed to suit the joint movement required andthe movement capability of the sealant. The joint width shall be 10 mmand 35 mm. A width to depth ratio of 1 : 0.8 for floor joints and 2 : 1 forfacade joints must be maintained. Standard joint widths for joints between concrete elements:(Movement Capability: 35 % (ASTM C719) and T: 80 C)Joint distance [m] Min. joint width [mm] Min. joint depth [mm]2 10 104 12 106 18 108 22 1110 28 14

All joints must be correctly designed and dimensioned in accordance withthe relevant standards, before their construction. The basis for calculationof the necessary joint widths are the type of structure and its dimensions, the technical values of the adjacent building materials and the joint sealingmaterial, as well as the specific exposure of the building and the joints.Joints 10 mm in width are for crack control and therefore non-move-ment joints. What is relevant is the joint width at the time of application ofthe sealant (guide value of +10 C).For larger joints please contact our Technical Department.

    APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONSSUBSTRATE PREPARATION

Sikaflex-11 FC+ generally has strong adhesion withoutprimers or activators to most clean, dry and soundsubstrates. The substrate must be clean, dry, sound and homo-geneous, free from oils, grease, dust and loose or fri-able particles. Sikaflex-11 FC+ adheres withoutprimers and/or activators. However, for optimum adhesion and critical, high per-formance applications, such as highly stressed joints,and/or extreme weather exposure, the following prim-ing and/or pre-treatment procedures shall be fol-lowed: Porous substratesConcrete, aerated concrete and cement-basedrenders, mortars, brick, and natural stone have to beprimed with Sika Primer-3 N applied with a cleanbrush. Before sealing allow a flash-off time of > 30minutes (< 4 hours). Non- porous substratesGlazed tiles, powder coated metals, aluminium, anod-ised aluminium, stainless steel and galvanised steelhave to be treated with a very fine abrasive pad andSika Aktivator-205 shall be applied using a clean tow-el. Before sealing allow a flash-off time of > 15minutes.All metal surfaces that are not mentioned above haveto be treated with a very fine abrasive pad and SikaPrimer-3 N shall be applied using a clean brush orroller. Before sealing allow a flash-off time of > 30minutes (< 4 hours).PVC has to be pre-treated with Sika Primer-215 ap-plied with a clean brush. Before sealing allow a flash-off time of > 30 minutes (< 4 hours). For more detailed advice, please contact our TechnicalDepartment. Note: Primers are adhesion promoters. They areneither a substitute for the correct cleaning of a sur-face, nor do they improve the strength of the surfacesignificantly.

    APPLICATION METHOD / TOOLS

Sikaflex-11 FC+ is supplied ready to use. After the necessary substrate preparation, insert a foilpack into the sealant gun and extrude Sikaflex-11 FC+into the joint making sure that it comes into full con-tact with the sides of the joint and avoids any air en-trapment. It is recommended to use masking tapewhere exact joint lines or neat lines are required. Re-move the tape within the skin time. Do not use toolingproducts containing solvents. For bonding application apply Sikaflex-11 FC+ inbeads, strips or spots to the bonding surface in inter-vals of a few centimeters each. Use hand pressure onlyto set the element to be bonded into position. If ne-cessary, use adhesive tapes, wedges, or props to holdthe assembled elements together during the initialcuring hours. An incorrectly positioned element can easily be un-fastened and repositioned during the first few minutesafter application. Optimum bonding will be obtainedafter the complete curing of Sikaflex-11 FC+, i.e. after24 to 48 hours at +23 C for an adhesive thicknessbetween 2 to 3 mm.

    CLEANING OF TOOLS

Clean all tools and application equipment immediatelyafter use with Sika Remover-208 and/or Sika Top-Clean T. Once cured, residual material can only be re-moved mechanically.

LIMITATIONSElastic sealants may not be overpainted becausepaints have a limited movement capability and thuswill crack during joint movements.

Colour variations may occur due to exposure tochemicals, high temperatures and/or UV-radiation(especially with the colour shade white). However, achange in colour is purely of aesthetic nature anddoes not adversely influence the technical perform-ance or durability of the product. Before using onnatural stone contact our Technical Department.

Before using Sikaflex-11 FC+ on natural stone, please refer to our Technical Department for advice.

Do not use Sikaflex-11 FC+ as a glass sealer, on bitu-minous substrates, natural rubber, EPDM rubber oron any building materials which might bleed oils, plasticizers or solvents that could attack the sealant.

Do not use Sikaflex-11 FC+ to seal joints in andaround swimming pools.

Do not use Sikaflex-11 FC+ for joints under waterpressure or for permanent water immersion.

Do not expose uncured Sikaflex-11 FC+ to alcoholcontaining products as this may interfere with thecuring reaction.
