SARAH JOHNSONPRODUCT DESIGN PORTFOLIO

HELLO!

My name is Sarah and I am a senior in Product Design at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan.

As a student with a long time love for both the academic and creative, my passion is to create functional designs that evoke

their purpose while creating a positive user experience.

I also have an obsession with travel, which has motivated me to work hard to be able to see and experience as many cultures as possible. I have even had the opportunity to combine my passion for design and my love of travel by visiting manufacturing facilities in both the United States and China. In addition I had the opportunity to study abroad in Florence, Italy and am currently living in Levanto, Italy.

GOAL: To create a modern commuter bicycle inspired by the 1930’s in America.

THEME DEVELOPMENT:

looking up trends during the time period. As a result I came up with three opportunities: boating, american tourism, and depression-era glass.

IDEATIONAfter theme development, I began the ideation phase. I took inspiration from all three themes

Inspired by the elegance of depression era cut glass, the Lyndale is a commuter bike made for enjoying weekend trips to Belle Isle and relaxing under the trees with a bottle of wine.

WINE CARRIER AND RACKSpalted maple carrier has room for two wine bottles and a con-tainer to carry food or snacks for a picnic on a nice day. Wire rack has soft touch rubber hooks to hang two wine glasses. When not being used for wine glasses, hooks can be used to hold grocery bags.

A Smart Health Research Project

SMART HEALTH RESEARCHThe goal for this project was to come up with a product that would help people be more healthy in their everyday lives.

INTERVIEWSThe research portion of this project was conducted in groups, so to interview a broad range of demographics our group of three split the age range of 10 years to 40 years into three sections.

MOTIVATION FOR HEALTH

FINDINGS

FOOD & NUTRITIONEating healthy on a daily basis emerged as a common goal throughout all the age demographics interviewed.

EXERCISEAlso all age groups felt that everyday physical activity was a more achievable lifestyle over exercise programs that are prone to failure.

INFORMATION GATHERINGAnother reccuring trend among those interviewed was the use of the internet to gather health and wellness information.

INDUCTION COOKTOPAn induction cooktop allows the user to simultaneously cook a meal and navigate the touch screen because with an induction system the cooking surface does not heat up.

KITCHEN SCALEThe pressure sensitive surface can detect where an ingredient is placed and how much it weighs. The cooktop can then assist the user by indicating whether there is too much or too little of an ingredient based on a recipe that is displayed.

TOUCH SCREEN SURFACEThe embedded touch screen allows the user to easily navigate the internet for recipes and set temperature settings for the cooktop.

The Google Cooktop allows the cooking enthusiast to be free of cluttered kitchen counter tops and the fear of damag-ing a laptop when looking up recipes. An embedded screen can store user profiles and search the internet for recipes based on preferences and diet restrictions. Then, on the same surface, ingredients can be measured by weight and then cooked in induction compatible cookware.

USER PROFILESThe countertop stores information about each family member including diet restrictions, allergies, and health goals. It can also be connected to exercise apps to recieve data about a user’s daily exercise and recommend healthy portion sizes. The countertop will then make any necessary changes to recipes to fit appropriate portion sizes and diet restrictions.

RECIPE SEARCHThe countertop would be able to search the internet for recipes or suggest one based on the family’s preferences and ingredients available.

TEMPERED GLASS SURFACEMade of tempered glass, the countertop would have a clean modern look as well as boasting many benefits. Glass is easy to clean and because it is non-porous, bacteria can not penetrate the surface and multiply. In addition, glass countertops are durable and can endure high tempertures.

Loraine is approached by her young son who lets her know he is hungry.

Loraine walks up to her kitchen counter and activates the embedded screen.

Loraine’s Google Cooktop then displays two options for recipe selection. Either the Cooktop will suggest a recipe or Loraine can search the internet.

The Google Cooktop then displays profiles for Loraine to select those who will be eating the meal. The Cooktop will then adjust portion number and sizes in the recipe.

The recipe is displayed on the countertop surface. As Loraine compiles her ingredients, she sets them on the surface and selects each one as it is set down. Ingredients are then weighed and visually cut into portions or blocked out in red to indicate too much.

As Loraine begins to cook she can select which step she is currently on and it highlights which ingredients are needed for that step.

Loraine finishes cooking her family’s meal...

And everyone enjoys dinner together.
