1 Application, function, configuration

Extremely short microwave pulses with low emitted power aretransmitted by the antenna system to the measured product, re-flected by the product surface and received by the antenna sys-tem. Radar waves travel at the speed of light. The time fromemission to reception of the signals is proportional to the levelin thevessel.Aspecial timestretchingprocedureensures reliableand precise measurement of the extremely short transmissionperiods. The latest microprocessor technology and the proven softwareECHOFOX select the level echo from among a large number offalse echoes and measure it precisely.By simply entering the vessel dimensions, the sensor can bemade to indicate a level-proportional signal. The product levelmust not be varied during adjustment.

Unaffected by temperature and pressureThe propagation of microwaves is practically unaffected by theambient temperature and pressure. Hence these radar sensorsare ideal for use under extremely difficult process conditions.Pressures from vacuum up to 160 bar (2320 psi) and temper-atures from -40 … +400 °C (-40 … +752 °F) are no problem forradar measurement.

Unaffected by product propertiesFluctuations in product composition or even complete productchanges do not influence the measuring result. A fresh adjust-ment is not necessary.

Frequency ranges for all applicationsVEGA radar sensors are available in two different frequencyranges and can thus be implemented in a wide variety of appli-cations.K-band instrumentswork in a frequency range over 20GHz. Thisenables theuse of very small antennasand respectively compactprocess fittings. Due to strong signal focussing, the measuringsystem achieves very high accuracy.C-band instrumentsare characterisedby low frequenciesaround6 GHz. Thus, in most cases, buildup and dirt on the anntennasystemor foamon the product surfacedo not affect themeasure-ment.

Functional safety (SIL)VEGAPULS 61, 62, 63, 65 and 66 radar sensors can be used forapplications thatmeet the special requirements of safety technol-ogy. In single channel architecture this is possible up to SIL2, indouble channel, diversitary redundant architecture up to SIL3.

Instrument selectionVEGAPULS series 60 radar sensors are optimised for each re-spectiveapplicationarea.Theyoperate in twodifferent frequencyranges (C or K band technology) and are available with differentantennas. These factors determine the instrument-specific beam

angles, measuring ranges and measuring characteristics. Theselection of the most suitable radar sensor depends on the re-spective application. The type overview on the following pagesprovides a good initial survey. For a detailed selection you canuse the "Finder" and "Configurator" on ourwebsite or contact oneof our agencies.

Bitumen tank

Fig. 2: Level measurement in a bitumen tank with VEGAPULS 62

Bitumen accrues during the crude oil distillation and is stored attemperatures around 200 °C (392 °F).The non-contact radarmeasuring principle is particularly suitablefor level measurement under high temperatures and in outgasingproducts. Due to its temperature adapter, the VEGAPULS 62radar sensor is suitable for temperatures up to 200 °C (392 °F).

Sugar evaporator

Fig. 3: Level measurement in a sugar evaporator with VEGAPULS 63

The VEGAPULS 63 radar sensor is particularly suitable for levelmeasurement in sugar evaporators. The PTFE encapsulatedhorn antenna protects against contamination and gumming upby the juice. The instrument is overpressure and vacuum resist-ant, even against pressure or vacuum shocks.

Storage tank for hazardouswaste

Fig. 4: Level measurement in a storage tank with VEGAPULS 65

The VEGAPULS 65 radar sensor is the ideal measuring systemfor level measurement of lacquers, colours and dilutions. Unaf-fected by process conditions such as outgasing andmovementsof the agitator, the radar measurement delivers exact measuringresult.

Storage tower

Fig. 5: Level measurement in a storage tower with VEGAPULS 65

Paper suspension is stored in large storage towers. The VEGA-PULS 66 radar sensor with a DN 250 flange and large horn an-tenna is well suited for level measurement in the upper part of thetowers.Thesensordelivers reliablemeasuredvalues, unaffectedby process conditions such as temperature, steam and high pulpdensities.

The optimumsolution for level measurement in an ammonia ves-sel, is the VEGAPULS 66 radar sensor in standpipe version. It operates with low frequencies so that its microwave are onlyslightly damped. The strandpipe improves the reflective proper-ties. The signal coupling in the standpipe is completely diffusion-tight through the ceramic antenna system.

3 Mounting instructions

Installation positionSelect an installation position you can easily reach for mountingand connecting as well as later retrofitting of an indicating andadjustmentmodule. The housing can be rotated by 330° withoutthe use of any tools. You canalso install the indicating andadjust-ment module in four different positions (each displaced by 90°).Measuring rangeFor the flange versions, the lower flange side is the referenceplane for the measuring range, for threaded versions, the sealsurface of the thread.

PressureThe process fitting must be sealed if there is gauge or low pres-sure in the vessel. Before use, check if the seal material is resist-ant against the measured product. The max. permissible pres-sure is stated in chapter "Technical data" or on the type label ofthe sensor.Horn and parabolic antennaThe illustrations in the mounting instructions show a VEGAPULSwith horn antenna. The mounting instructions also apply to theversion with parabolic antenna.Installation positionMount VEGAPULS in a distance of at least 200 mm from thevessel wall. An ideal installation location is at half vessel radius. If the sensor is mounted in the center of round or arched vesseltops, multiple echoes can be cause which can be gated out by arespective adjustment. If this distancecannotbemaintained, a false echo storageshouldbe carried out during setup. This applies particularly if buildup onthe vessel wall is expected. In such case,we recommendrepeat-ing the false echo storage later on with existing buildup.

Inflowing mediumDo notmount the instruments in or above the filling stream.Makesure that you detect the product surface and not the inflowingproduct.

Fig. 13: Inflowing medium

Sensor orientationIn liquids, direct the sensor as perpendicular as possible to theproduct surface to achieve optimummeasurement results.

Fig. 14: Orientation in liquids

Vessel installationsThe radar sensor should be installed at a location where no in-stallations cross the radar signals.Vessel installations such as, for example, ladders, limit switches, heatingspirals, struts, etc. cancause falseechoes thatget super-imposed on the useful echo. Make sure when planning yourmeasuring site that the radar sensor has a "clear view" to themeasured product. If there are existing vessel installations, a false echo storageshould be carried out during setup. If large vessel installationssuch as struts or supports cause falseechoes, these can be attenuated through supplementary meas-ures. Small, inclined sheet metal baffles above the installationsscatter the radar signals andprevent direct interfering reflections.

Fig. 15: Cover smooth profiles with deflectors

AgitatorsIf there are agitators in the vessel, a false echo storage should becarried out with the agitators in motion. This ensures that theinterferingreflections from theagitatorsare savedwith thebladesin different positions.

Fig. 16: Agitators

Foam generationThrough the action of filling, stirring and other processes in thevessel, dense foams which considerably damp the emitted sig-nals may form on the product surface.

If foams lead to measurement errors, you should use the biggestpossible radar antennas or low frequency radar sensors, e.g.VEGAPULS 65, 66 (C-band).VEGAFLEX sensors with guided microwaves are not influencedby foamgeneration and are particularly suitable for such applica-tions.Standpipe antennaBy the use of a standpipe antenna, influence of turbulences andvessel installations such as e.g. caused by heating spirals oragitators is excluded. The standpipe antenna is also suitable for vessels with foamgeneration or for measurement of products with low dielectricvalues (DK > 1.6).Standpipe antennas must extend alls the way down to the re-quested min. level, as measurement is only possible within thetube. If a goodmixingof theproduct is important, youshouldusearadar sensor with perforated surge pipe.Adhesive productsMeasurement in a standpipe is not recommended for very adhe-sive products.TurbulencesIf turbulences or heavy product movements are caused in thevessel, longstandpipeantennasshouldbe fastened to the vesselwall.Inflowing mediumDo not mount the instruments in or above the filling stream.

Fig. 17: Inflowing liquid

Measurement in the standpipe (surge or bypass tube)By using a standpipe, the influence of vessel installations andturbulence can be excluded. Under these prerequisites, themeasurement of products with low dielectric values (from DKvalue 1.6) is possible.

Note:Measurement in a standpipe is not recommended forvery adhesive products.

Surge or bypass tubes must extend all the way down to the re-quested min. level, as measurement is only possible within thetube.

Makesureyouprovide thenecessaryupperventhole in theSurgepipe. The hole must be aligned so that it and the polarisationmarking on the sensor are in the same plane (see illustration:"Pipe antenna system in a tank").

If possible, theantennadiameterof thesensorshouldcorrespondto the inner diameter of the tube.WithVEGAPULS this is approx.40 mm (1.575 in). The sensor can be used with tube diametersbetween 40… 80mm (1.575… 3.15 in).Asanalternativeto thesurgepipe in thevessel, apipesystemcanbe mounted outside of the vessel as a Bypass tube. 4 Electrical connection

4.1 General requirementsThe supply voltage range can differ depending on the instrumentversion. You can find exact specifications in chapter "Technicaldata".Take note of country-specific installation standards (e.g. theVDEregulations in Germany) as well as prevailing safety regulationsand accident prevention rules.

In hazardous areas you should take note of the appro-priate regulations, conformity and type approval certifi-cates of the sensors and power supply units.

4.2 Voltage supply4… 20mA/HART two-wireThe VEGA power supply units VEGATRENN 149AEx, VEGAS-TAB 690, VEGADIS 371 as well as VEGAMET signal condition-ing instruments are suitable for power supply. When one of theseinstruments is used, a reliable separation of the supply circuitsfrom the mains circuits according to DIN VDE 0106 part 101 isensured for VEGAPULS.4… 20mA/HART four-wirePower supply and current output are carried on two separateconnection cables. The standard version can be operated with an earth-connectedcurrent output, the Exd version must be operated with a floatingoutput. The instrument is designed in protection class I. To maintain thisprotection class, it is absolutely necessary that the ground con-ductor be connected to the internal ground conductor terminal.Profibus PAPower is supplied by a Profibus DP/PA segment coupler or aVEGALOG 571 EP input card.

Foundation FieldbusPower supply via the H1 Fieldbus cable.

4.3 Connection cableGeneralThe sensors are connected with standard cable without screen.Anoutercablediameterof5…9mmensures theseal effectof thecable entry.4… 20mA/HART four-wireFor power supply, an approved installation cable with PE con-ductor is necessary.4… 20mA/HART two-wire and four-wireIf electromagnetic interference is expected which is above thetest values of EN 61326 for industrial areas, screened cableshould be used. In HART multidrop mode the use of screenedcable is generally recommended.Profibus PA, Foundation FieldbusThe installation must be carried out according to the appropriatebus specification. VEGAPULS is connected respectively withscreened cable according to the bus specification. Power supplyand digital bus signal are transmitted via the same two-wire con-nection cable.Make sure that the bus is terminated via appropri-ate terminating resistors.VEGAPULS are optionally available with usual plug connectors(see "Technical data").

In Ex applications, the corresponding installation regu-lations must be noted for the connection cable.

4.4 Cable screening and groundingIf screened cable is necessary, the cable screen must be con-nected on both ends to ground potential. If potential equalisationcurrents are expected, the connection on the evaluation sidemust be made via a ceramic capacitor (e.g. 1 nF, 1500 V).Profibus PA, Foundation FieldbusIn systems with potential separation, the cable screen is con-nected directly to ground potential on the power supply unit, inthe connection box and directly on the sensor. In systems without potential equalisation, connect the cablescreen directly to ground potential only at the power supply unitand at the sensor - do not connect to ground potential in theconnection box or T-distributor.

5 Operation

5.1 OverviewVEGAPULS can be adjusted with the following adjustment me-dia:l with indicating and adjustment modulel anadjustmentsoftwareaccording toFDT/DTM standard,e.g.

PACTware™ and PC

and, depending on the signal output, also with:l a HART handheld (4… 20mA/HART)l the adjustment program AMS (4 … 20 mA/HART and Foun-

dation Fieldbus)l the adjustment program PDM (Profibus PA)l a configuration tool (Foundation Fieldbus)

The entered parameters are generally saved in VEGAPULS, op-tionally also in PLICSCOM or in the adjustment program.

5.2 Adjustment with the indicating and adjust-ment module PLICSCOM

Setup and indicationPLICSCOM is a pluggable indication and adjustment module forplics® sensors. It can be placed in four different positions on theinstrument (each displaced by 90°). Indication and adjustmentare made via four keys and a clear, graphic-capable dot matrixindication. The adjustment menu with language selection isclearly structured and enables easy setup. After setup,PLICSCOMservesas indicating instrument: throughthescrewedcover with glass insert, measured values can be read directly inthe requested unit and presentation style. The integratedbackground lightingof thedisplaycanbeswitchedvia the adjustment menu.1)

5.3 Adjustment with PACTware™PACTware™/DTMIndependent of the signal output 4… 20mA/HART, Profibus PAor Foundation Fieldbus, the VEGAPULS sensors can be oper-ated directly on the instrument via PACTware™. An instrumentdriver for the respective VEGAPULS is necessary for the adjust-ment with PACTware™. All currently available VEGA DTMs arecomposed as DTMCollection with the current PACTware™ ver-sion on a CD. They are available for a protective fee from ourrespective VEGA agency. In addition, this DTM Collection incl.PACTware™ canbe downloadedfree-of-charge in the basic ver-sion via the Internet. To use the entire range of functions of a DTM, incl. project doc-umentation, a DTM licence is required for that particular instru-ment family. This licence can be bought from the VEGA agencyserving you.Connecting the PC directly to the sensor

Note:With power supply units with integrated HART resist-ance (internal resistance approx. 250 Ohm), an addi-tional external resistance is not necessary. This applies,e.g. to the VEGA instruments VEGATRENN 149A, VE-GADIS 371, VEGAMET 381. Also standard Ex separa-tors aremost of the timeequippedwith a sufficientlyhighcurrent limitation resistor. In such cases, VEGA-CONNECT 3 can be connected in parallel to the4… 20mA cable.
