• The CGM format first appeared in the 1980‘s• The format was widely supported many graphics based applications

Background – HTML5

• HyperText Markup Language (HTML)• Core technology of the Internet used for structuring and presenting content on

the World Wide Web• Not owned, non-proprietary• HTML5 adds many new syntactic features including:

• <video>, <audio> and <canvas> elements• Additionally the integration of the SVG graphics format

• The new features are primarily designed to enable multimedia delivery without using plug-ins

• Introduces several application programming interfaces (APIs) for complex web applications

• Device-independent design to work on broad array of devices PCs, smartphones and tablets



Background – WebGL

• JavaScript API for rendering interactive 3D and 2D graphics • Designed and maintained by the non-profit Khronos Group• Completely integrated into all the web standards of the

browser permitting GPU acceleration. • No plug-in required in a compatible web browser• WebGL is widely supported in modern browsers.



ActiveX is a software framework created by Microsoft that adapts its earlier Component Object Model (COM) and Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) technologies for content downloaded from a network, particularly in the context of the World Wide Web

The Status Quo



• CGM has an excellent reputation as a 2D graphics format• Major weakness has been the deployment of CGM in an electronic format

e.g. IPC & IETP• A plug-in technology is required to achieve the distribution

• Why is a plug-in technology weakness?• ActiveX Control, has to be installed on the target computer• ActiveX has been strongly criticized for security problems• Support dropped entirely in new Microsoft browser (Edge)

• The result, organizations are reluctant to embrace the technology• plug-in would usually have to be accredited

to run on a company's IT system, costing time and money• The security issue is also a major consideration

The Plug-In

• Recently SVG has emerged as a potential alternative to CGM• SVG has the advantage of not requiring a plug-in

technology, it is HTML5 native <svg>• SVG is similar to CGM, it is a vector format also capable of

supporting raster images• Unlike CGM it is based on XML, surely a big advantage?

• So why not use SVG an alternative format to CGM?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic)



• The main reason for not choosing SVG is the lack of control of the format• The result of this characteristic is a risk the file will not be interoperable

• This is a key feature of CGM where industry profiles e.g. S1000D and ATA control the structure of the data

CGM Profiles



• There is no issue using SVG files in a general web environment• Using SVG in a specification compliant environment will require a

similar option to CGM• Industry profiles that can be approved and validated by respective

organizations• SVG technology being based on XML has the capability to provide profiles• This work will not be a quick process and will probably incur project and

development costs

• The task would probably be governed by the SVG Working Group and endorsement from S1000D and ATA committees

• The big question, who will sponsor, work and fund the task?

SVG Requirements



• In the near term CGM is still the best option if you need to deliver compliant files

• CGM editing software is very capable and in many cases supports the SVG format

• In the future if SVG can be validated against an industry XML schema then its adoption should be straightforward

• The viewing technology as explained earlier is more challenging environment especially for CGM

• Time to look at the technologies
