Top 5 Ways to Maintain a Calf’s Thermoneutral Zoneby Greg Van Buren, Territory Manager

No, we’re not talking about starting a running program or exercising your muscles in 2011. We’re talking about maintaining the thermoneutral zone of your calves during these cold winter months.

Not familiar with thermoneutral zone (TNZ)? The TNZ of a calf is the range of temperature in which an animal uses no additional energy to maintain its body temperature. For a calf less than one month old, that range is between 50°F and 78°F, and any temperatures higher or lower will mean your calf is spending extra energy to keep warm or cool rather than putting that energy towards growth. For a calf over one month old, the TNZ range is 32°F to 78°F. For winter purposes, we’ll be talking about what you can do to keep your calf’s body temperature within the TNZ range.

bedding is deep the calf can nest to trap warm air around itself. Ability to nest also helps prevent respiratory disease. A lack of bedding means the calf is conducting more of its heat into the cold ground.

3. Keep giving fresh warm water. While no one enjoys the extra hassle of feeding milk and water, water improves feed intake and helps develop the rumen in young calves. Warm water should be provided 2 to 3 times per day.

Udder Singe by ActivonCows with Clean Udders Produce Quality Milk

Designed to help improve overall milk quality and eliminate clipping, singeing removes long hair providing many benefits including:

• Quality milk — helps control mastitis and lower SCC. • Makes pre- and post-dipping more effective.• More environmentally friendly — with short hair, udders stay clean - less dirt and manure.

How it WorksThe cow never knows there is work being done on her because of the low temperature of the flame and the quick pass of the wand. Watch Video Demonstration online at animart.com

Give Your Calves The Shelter They Need!

Udder Hair Removal by Flaming or Singeing by Zen Miller, UW-Extension Outagamie County Agriculture AgentPrinted in UW-Extension The Dairy Partner June 2008 Issue.

Hair removal is a vital process to improve udder cleanliness, reduce bacteria and make udder prep easier in the parlor. The fastest way to remove udder hair is to singe the udder on a regular basis. This process is easy and can save time in prep-ping cows by helping keep the udders cleaner.

Process of Singeing Udder Hair:1. Remove any organic bedding from the udder that might catch on fire in the process. 2. Pass the wand under the udder about 2-4” from the udder floor. 3. Have cotton rag or glove on so you can put out any hot spots or rub off the hair. 4. Move quickly from cow to cow in the parlor.

Develop a schedule for hair removal. Flaming uddersshould reduce long hair from getting in the teat cups, reduce bacterial contamination, improve udder preptime and quality, and is a humane way to reduce hairon the udder.
